  • In this video, you will see some of the most wonderful and friendliest people in the Philippines. Olango Island is part of Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu and is possibly the most overlooked place in the greater Cebu City area to visit. Most of the locals love see and to interact with foreigners. Something as simple as smiling will get you a ton of positive reactions. Riding a bicycle in a small community in the Philippines is an experience unlike any other I have found.
There is almost always something going on anywhere you go in the Philippines. This visit to Olango Island was no different. A festival called Baliw-Baliw (defined as insane; crazy; mad) was going on and it lived up to its name.

The place is very typical of the Philippines and that of its island life, with the twist of a festival called "baliw-baliw". As you noted: defined as insane; crazy; mad. That is from the root word "baliw", said twice it means "like crazy/insane" or "slightly crazy". Like say the word for dog in cebuano is "irô" , "irô-irô" would be "like a dog" or even an artificial dog. A mountain barangay of Cebu city is called Binaliw, that could mean "of having become crazy". I missed out on the bike route, but if that 42 minutes was the whole island, then wow. Also, that's a lot of people walking on the streets with seemingly no place to go! Thanks for the video.

Thanks for the detailed comment. I learn more about the Philippines every day. I am blessed to be here. I have a few more videos about Olango that I'll post in the future, but I have a lot from there already so I'm going to work on other things to space them out a little. I have so much fun every time I go there, I keep going back. Thanks for watching.

Hey Norie, It's cool to see you here. Yes, it is a fiesta. It is an annual festival called Baliw-Baliw. I had no idea it was going on so it was a nice surprise. Thanks for watching.

That's cool. I think I would enjoy living there. I haven't been in a while, but I think about it often. Thanks for watching.

@@AmericanForeigner But living on Olango is also a small challenge. You depend on the ferry to get things done in the city. You only get the most necessary things to buy on Olange. After 14 years living on Mactan Island I decided to live in the province. Quiet, no exhaust fumes, no crowds of people, little traffic etc..

Baliw means crazy, so the men go crazy by wearing women's skirts and dresses during the festival? What about the women? .... Nothing?
