    I love, love, love these videos! Thank you so much for making them. You have helped me so much with caring for my orchids. I am quite a novice, and as I spend the winter in Arizona, I don't have as many orchids as I would like, nor do they perform as well because of the traveling they are forced to do. I have a small backyard greenhouse in my Indiana home and the orchids much prefer Indiana to Arizona! (I don't tend to agree with them!) one of the biggest mistakes I've made so far is potting the orchids in too big of pots... Anyway, thanks again for these videos. They are GREAT!

    Hi, Brad, I was stumped by brassavola roots, but I the last year I found a video by Orchid Ninja on the subject. Please check it out if you haven't yet. I had several cuttings and none did well until I switched to smaller bark.

    Tes Cattleyas sont magnifiques!
    Great job growing those Cattleyas. I wish I could provide enough light and grow those.
    My flurescent lights give very good growth, but just a bit lacking for intensity, so no blooms. Just empty sheets or aborted spikes.
    Are more recent normal-color growth LED up to the task for a basement growing area?
    When I researched it years ago it was too expensive and probably still not intense enough light for Cattleyas, maby technology improved?

    Hi, Great, informative video's. Just purchased some seedling cattleyas that are in small orchid bark. I decided to repot in new bark, and noticed rot in the center of the root system. I put a styrofoam peanut in the center after removing dead roots, and replaced the bark. I'm just not certain how long they should stay dry before watering. It gets very hot, but I do have a mister running while the sun is out. Can you give me any watering advice. I'm guilty of many counts of death by overwatering. Thanks. Mo

    In this video you mention that the misting and fogging systems serve two different purposes. Could you do a video on this topic some day?

  • @dragon_empress_1

    Love your brassovola nodosa!!! I have one myself, it's just growing on a half coconut shell that I stuck a hook into. The coconut coir inside holds the moisture so you never have problems with roots. The only issue I have is how on earth do I divide it to start a new batch?

    • @BradsGreenhouse
      @BradsGreenhouse  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      sugarcaine haha, sounds like a great clone of the plant. oh to have your troubles! nice growing!

  • @emhartjes

    Brad, awesome orchids. Congratulations. You mentioned that misters and foggers where different. Could you explain how they are different.

    • @BradsGreenhouse
      @BradsGreenhouse  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Elona Hartjes it is mainly the droplet size, the fogger is used even in winter, it just ups the humidity but keeps everything nice and dry. The misting system cools and humiditfies 10x that of the fogger.

    Very pretty Brad I am having the same problem with my brassavola too it has a weak root system. Maybe its just the way that orchid is ,..im not sure. That first SLC you brought out was gorgeous

      The Brassavola Nodosa performs best in hydrorock, lava rock, or gravel. Wood chips, and moss retain too much moisture for this species's roots. They also do well on wood mounts. I hope this helps.

    How long did the brassavola take to bloom?

  • @charlenevansant475
    @charlenevansant475 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Read the care instructions on line - give your brassavola more sun, not less. It's supposed to get some red spots on the leaves.

      I'm thinking the roots are slow growing because of the blooms and because they apperently prefer growing in grooves and cracks of treesbark

    Brad, stop cutting your Brassavola spikes! While most Cattleya alliance plants will not rebloom, Brassavola will rebloom off old spikes when they are really happy. I've had my nodosa bloom as much as 3 times on one growth.

    Brad : not Cat-lay-a please! It's Cat-lee-a after my ancestor William Cattley from who's name the genus is derived. Go visit The American Orchid Society's web site on its pronunciation

      This is interesting. I love this comment and your name. I alway thought it should be pronounced as you say here because of my experience with Latin names and am happy to have confirmed by someone connected to the person they were names after.
