I absolutely love this scene. Also, the difference between model railroaders and non model railroaders is that model railroaders brag about how slow things can move, whereas people not in the hobby always ask how fast the trains can go...

Awesome! I run Missouri Pacific, Union Pacific, Southern Pacific and St. Louis Southwestern in HO scale. If I ever had to switch scales it would be O scale "two rail". Happy railroading!!!!!!!!!!

Really a nice scene. Captures late '60's, early 70's B&O freight railroading well. However, as someone who was a qualified CSX T&E employee in former B&O territory, there are a couple of problems with the signal at the end of what appears to be a siding. First, While the signal is clearly at a control point, and would be an "absolute" signal, it carries a number plate, which would be used for an "intermediate' signal. Second, since this signal is for the diverging track, the pilot light should be below, not above, the main target, since "Medium Clear" would be the best indication you could get at that location. Since both tracks need to be signaled, the builder/owner should move that signal over to the main running track side, as well as remove the number plate from it, and put an accurate signal for the siding track in it's place. But I really did like the overall "look" of what I saw of the layout and the trains operating on it.

Oh, and there also needs to be a single, absolute signal for traffic approaching the control point from the other direction as well. I would take the signal that appears to not be in a useful place, past the turnout, and move it back to being just before the points of the facing switch. B&O practice was to have signals about one to two miles apart. CSX practice is to have blocks about three miles long, which for a lot of crew people is just a little too far apart (easier to forget what the last aspect was).

Oh, and that facing signal also needs to have it's number plate removed and the lower pilot light put on it for diverging moves into the siding, as well as the top pilot light for trains moving straight ahead. There are actually very good on-line sources of material on how B&O CPL signals work(ed), and the rules governing them.

Hi Paul! Thanks for the feedback. These are the things I need to know. It is at the end of a long passing siding on the railroad (60FT) and at the top of the eastbound grade. EB trains use that track as their "main line" and WB trains use it as a passing siding. Does this change any of your recommendations? Moving the top light is not a problem. Should it have a single or double white below the CPL? Also I do plan to install a dwarf CPL for WB traffic entering the siding- just got them in a month ago and haven't had the time just yet. I was thinking of installing a "P" or yellow"G" for the EB traffic as well. Would this be realistic given the grade. Once a train stops there it is always a challenge getting it going again....even in O scale! :)

Are you talking about the track the reading train is on? That signal has to stay there as I need 3 engine lengths into the new block in order to be able to stop the train and cut the power. I was planning to install another CPL behind it to govern EB traffic on the main line from that point. While most EB traffic uses the inside siding as a "main" there should be a signal governing a train on the outside track as well....
