    Alonso sacrificed his entry speed into the corner, and by taking such a wide angle, it allowed him to get a better launch coming out of the corner, giving him just enough of a gap to keep Perez behind. They need to make a rule where if a safety car is called and then after the same incident turns to a red flag they should count the red flag back to when the safety car was called and restart with that order. Wouldve let oscar and Danny unlap themselves quickly and get back to where they were when the race was neutralized.

    • @benbhardy
      @benbhardy 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +23

      Yup. As it was, Oscar and Daniel were basically punished for doing the right thing from a safety perspective and pitting their damaged cars instead of staying out and following the safety car for a lap with cars with rear wings hanging off. The precedent race direction set with this race is that teams with badly damaged cars should stay out if there's a high chance of a red flag instead of doing the safe thing and bringing the car in. That's not a good precedent to set if safety is their top priority. Though had race control immediately red flagged a situation that clearly needed a red flag because of barrier damage the whole thing could have been avoided.

    Fernando’s drive was the best defense by an inferior car to a far superior car I’ve ever seen. What an incredible use of defensive tactics by the
    old fox. Placed the car perfectly. Brilliant use of battery. Knew exactly when to defend and to attack. Ana anticipated Checo’s every move.

      Hungary against hamilton was insane, but hungary is hard to pass and easy to defend(despite huge difference in performance).
      But this is clearly the final testament of his supreme defense capabilities.
      He held longer than in hungary, and in a track where passing is relatively easy.
      You could see from Perez' view that alonso spent the whole track charging the battery, to then use it all in the main straight.
      Absolutely insane

      He also tired checo out,he tired his nervous system really bad considering how long he dragged checo with drs,checo after finally making the move knew he had to defend t1 if fernando tried late braking there so he went defensive and braked just a meter or two late which was enough for nando to have a run down on 4,even after that perez could possibly take the place back in the last 4 corners but alonso just made perez’s chances slim to none becoming absolutely unpredictable taking unotrthodox lines and just giving checo a lot of turbulence to deal with. I wouldn’t have cared if fernando lost out to checo at the line, the fact he made to the line wheel to wheel is an understatement in itself nevertheless being on the winning side of the battle.

    My biggest pet peeve with the TV direction is that when it gets to about lap 3 or 4, they show like a million different replays of the race start from loads of different onboard perspectives. Meanwhile DRS has just been enabled and the entire pack is still bunched up. And they always end up having to cut a replay short as they scramble around to quickly show the ongoing overtake. It's just infuriating! And also yes, on Sunday you could just see Lando's gap to Max coming down ever so slightly from 1.5 to 1.4 to 1.3 etc and the TV directors didn't even seem to notice! It was obvious that Lando was about to be in DRS range and yet they still practically missed Max & Lando going side by side through turn 1... it's just careless

    I'd like to see them allowing to change their prediction after the final practice session, so that it's not just wild guess based on historical performance, and you can choose to not change and double down to get 2 points. With how much experience they share between themselves, I'd like to see them put that into action.

    This race was a replay of the sepang race where Checo got his maiden podium. He was in a Sauber chasing Alsonso in a Ferrari.
    Sergio said he didn't have enough experience to overtake Fernando.. years later, they practically switched cars and still same result huh. Still great performance from Sergio. So glad to see him back to form

    I am a Perez fan so call it a biased opinion if you will, but I don't understand why Matt even on this occasion brings up the time deficit to Max to criticise Checo, yet he praises Alonso for his unparallelled defence. "I can you see how you're stuck behind a slower car because of masterful defending by a 300-IQ Alonso but, Sergio, care to explain this totally unrelated 34-second gap to Max?" Come on, Matt!

    I agree about the Lando three-stop. I considered two-stop as well, but I thought the only issue with taking that was that I didn't know how bad the degradation would be. I can't think of any time someone tested tires for as long as Lando would've to know how much worse the tires can get. So they probs played it safer than sorry just from a statistical point of view

    I think the Mercedes team is always a little more susceptible to a bad weekend during a sprint weekend because they often have sub par Friday's but find the setup overnight.
    On a sprint weekend they can't do that.

    Thank you Fernando and Sergio for the delightful show! No discounting the skill of Max, I’m no idiot, but Fernando, watched the race in freaking Monaco, in traffic, and not on a scenic cruise at the front; casually, exhibiting his insane driver IQ. Fernando, could run race strategy for the entire paddock from the seat of his Aston. I think his radio commentary backs this statement. It’s almost humorous to hear the team simply bless his stated strategy and observations of other team’s performance. It’s just another Sunday drive, at break neck speeds, for Alonso. Sergio, whom I’m rooting for as well, simply needed to finish a race. I hope we have several more years of Alonso, on the grid, but I also can’t wait until he is managing the strategy for a team. I fathom it will take the sport to another level and I hope a team can afford him. 😎

    It felt wrong, but the Daniel/Oscar thing kind of makes sense if you think about a situation where someone is more than one lap down. You can’t just ignore the laps they’ve not done because of fuel and tyre wear so you’d have to send them around the track.
    If they’re completely unlapping themselves then we would have to wait for them to drive around the track multiple times before we could restart properly. In a worst case scenario we could have someone who retired rejoin the race like Perez did recently.
    A rule where they could unlap themselves by a single lap might make sense though.

    I believe the reason for the two cars not being able to gain back their laps was because they took them into the garage, which meant they had to start at the back of the line for the formation lap, hence not getting a lap back. It is there to stop people from popping the car into the garage on the start losing a lap and changing items as they are out of parc-ferme..... but yeah is a bit daft

    • @RaZor921
      @RaZor921 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      @@drayvnxBecause Daniel was a lap down, the rules screwed him over because he had to go into the garage on Lap 1 before the red flag came out while the others did another lap behind the safety car, and then they repaired his car under the red flag and he wasn't allowed to unlap himself before the restart.
      Why they didn't immediately red flag the race or allow him and Oscar to unlap themselves is beyond me. It's not like the damage was their fault and it ruined what would have been a really strong race from Danny especially. He was sticking in Yuki's DRS after the team told him to not overtake and before that he was lapping similar to the top 3 runners.

    Regarding the unlapping, i belive that is because the two drivers were lapped by the entire field at that point. Normally, they are allowed to unlap because they have been lapped by some and are placed in the middle of the field, getting in the way of the other drivers. That was not the case here.

    I think the question is not how was Alonso able to hold Perez for such a long time. I think it's more important to see how much better the Red Bull is that it could live in the dirty air for that long and still challenge. It's clear how much better the car is, because no other car could live there without overheating and destroying its tires. (cough cough Mercedes George Russell radio messages)

  • @zulubunsen9067
    @zulubunsen9067 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    As far as I know, the unlapping before a Safety Car restart is mainly about safety, not "leveling the field" -- ie. so that slower cars don't get mixed up with faster ones. Even so, if you're two laps down and you get to unlap yourself before a SC restart, you only get one lap back. They won't get an extra lap just so things are more fair -- if you drive one lap less, you'll be one lap down.
    From what I've read, in cases where drivers were allowed to unlap themselves before a Red Flag restart was because they were part of the "fast lane" in the pits, ie. they were lapped, but part of the pack before the race suspension. Daniel and Oscar went to the pits one lap before the race was suspended, they were essentially spending one lap's time repairing the cars. In endurance racing this is pretty much a regular occurrence. With the Red Flag it does feel a bit unfair, but it's more down to bad luck -- which tends to happen with SC and Red Flags.
