    I have been blessed to see her at the Met several times, at least twice as Azucena. Her Stride la Vampa brought the house down every time, had half the audience in tears. Just amazing.

    This is some of the greatest Verdi singing of all time. Do we have any mezzos like this anymore? Dolora never became a household name, although she will be sorely missed when she retires. Of course, with singing like this, I don't think she will need to retire anytime soon.

    Dolora and I attended the University of Nevada Reno's vocal department. She was a bit older than I. Real nice lady. She now runs a school for Individual Distinguished Young Voices.

    BRAVA! My favorite Mezzo soprano.. she is some singer.. What I appreciate the most, is while the voice has matured, it is still a steady sound.. no wobble's still a lovely voice and very very strong top notes.. Love this woman.

    Although excellent technical, linguistic and interpretive guidance play a part in the development of all operatic voices, to a significant degree, phenomenal operatic voices are God-given. Ms. Zajick has been thusly blessed.

    SING, WOMAN!!! This is from 2011, and she sounds more secure and more fierce from top to bottom than she did singing O DON FATALE at the Tucker Gala a good 20 years ago?!?!? WHAAAAT?!?!? Long may she peel the patina from the walls, and may she continue to nurture young dramatic voices of the future...BRAVA!!!!

      I'd reckon that Zajick, Cossotto, Verrett, and Troyanos had the best intepretation of this role. Callas didn't perform the role but her interpretation of this one aria also stands the test of time.

    It's funny to read some of the comments below, but you always get these so-called experts and critics on opera videos. Considering that Zajick just sang a well-received Amneris at the Met in 2019 (at nearly 67), it shows that she knows her technique VERY well. The great Fedora Barbieri was astonished when she first heard Zajick, and said, "Oh my God, where did you learn to sing like that??"

  • @marcnicholson9480
    @marcnicholson9480 11 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I chatted with Zajick at a small reception in DC this week. Truly a nice and down-to-earth person, and VERY smart. She said Don Carlo was one of her three favorite opera roles, so I assume this is among her favorite arias. I went on TH-cam and have listened to every version she has sung of O Don Fatale, and this from Madrid is the best. It is superb. But that said, I must say that the greatest recorded version of this aria ever is by the immortal Maria Callas, and it also is on TH-cam.

    I wish she would enunciate the vowels in the middle part of her voice. It's as if she is trying to conserve something (breath, vocal alignment?) by not making them distinct. But it ends up distorting the whole meaning of what she's singing. I love her large, powerful voice, and impressive technique, but portraying the text acurately is also what helps move an audience.

    Beautiful. Dramatic soprano? In what role? haha. Maybe Santuzza? She has a light way of using the acuti sometimes, so lovely; she uses it like a register a bit less sul fiato. That's almost contralto to me. I love mezzos and contraltos.

  • @greatmomentsofopera7170
    @greatmomentsofopera7170 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Unbeleivable that the human trumpet (as Fleming called her once!) was still singing this powerfully and solidly at 59. But it’s come at a cost - the vowels are absurdly modified and as a result her diction is terrible (and is she adding the letter G to the front of those Aimes in the slow central section?!!) she also can’t sing below a mezzo forte which is typical of singers who consistently oversang in heavy repertoire. Lots of lyric baritones end up this way).
    Nevertheless this is absolutely her repertoire and she is a phenomenon:

    • @savioalves1234
      @savioalves1234 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      taking into account that biggest of sopranos can't sing at all at age 59, still impressive.

      Sávio Faschet high voices tend to age worse (tenors get worse earlier than basses etc.)

    • @LaSopRAWna
      @LaSopRAWna 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I have always HATED this aspect of her technique - how she purses her lips so intensely as a rule in order to keeps her mouth locked shut to stick the sound in her nose in her lower range. It does NOT sound good and tends to distort the lyrics and make the sound ugly and nasal. For example "ti maledicOO...ti maledicOO...il mio beltUH..." instead of maledico belta. Granted, the voice is huge and dramatic and a gift from God but I guess i don't think her particular technique is really working for her down there as consistently and strenuously as she applies it. I think it's a safety blanket. She needs to loosen up, but it's a hard area to navigate and I get that. I think she could use it as a base for practice but then in performance, open the jaw some and let's hear the words and a nicer warmer sound there!! I hope someone knows what i mean. She's aiming for a ueber forward placement and i just think it sounds ugly and distorts the text. And it doesn't look particularly pretty.

    • @LaSopRAWna
      @LaSopRAWna 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just watched Shirley Verrett sing this aria. What splendidly GORGEOUS WARM scrumptious tone she had throughout and no distorted words with lockjaw and jutting lips and she didn't have to shove the sound in her nose to be heard. Masterful technique she had. Don't care for Zajick's technique at all, though it has seen her through.

    She looks apologetic about losing breath at the end. She really did have an uncanny way of preserving the integrity of the voice - Cossotto’s acuti were badly flat by mid-career - but it involved a strange bottling up of the sound and distortion of vowels. Strange how she was the best for so long but not really ‘famous’.

      @@draganvidic2039 maybe you do. But think I have the wisdom to know that all voices have their limitations. True, you don't want to give everybody a gold star but I think you're hypercritique of EVERYONE is just to show off. Get self esteem in healthier more constructive ways Sis. Pinch

    Histriónica. La voz fija en la nariz. Eso no es una voz libre. Y ninguna línea de canto. Lo contrario de una voz bella y cálida. Que me perdonen sus admiradores

      Cierto. Justo en el inicio se puede notar cómo empieza con una voz de cabeza nasal y estrangulada, pasa a una voz de pecho más o menos correcta (aunque al menos tiene) y vuelve a la voz de cabeza estrangulada. Está bien que desarrolle la voz de pecho pero es una lástima que la voz de cabeza sea tan mala

      Es la forma qué ella halló cómo cantar, como expresar su arte. Hizo una carrera, muchos las admiran. Ustedes que han logrado?. Ni mierda 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

      @@robertotorres9945 Realmente es un comentario absurdo lo que los demás hemos conseguido o no en nuestras vidas. Simplemente estamos comentando como canta esta señora y lo que yo sí afirmo es que Zajick como la mayoría de cantantes actuales tienen que aprender mucho deauténticas mezzos del pasado como Stignani, Barbieri o Simionato. Grandes voces y bien emitidas. Obviamente ninguna ha sido perfecta. Ninguno lo somos. Bueno, la única cantante que se aproxima a la perfección humana es desde mi punto de vista Maria Callas.
