The Thunderbird is still running today actually, it hasn't retired yet. It's just that the service now is limited between Tsuruga and Osaka, and no longer goes to Kanazawa.
@@venturerbrandon I believe they're still running the _Thunderbird_ train because the Special Rapid trains from Osaka to Tsuruga can only be four cars long east of Ōmi-Imazu Station on the JR West Kosei Line. If they could have run 12-car trains all the way to Tsuruga it's likely that the _Thunderbird_ train would be retired.
I made a reservation online. At first, I was only able to get an aisle seat, but there were quite a few cancellations in the month leading up to the ride, so I changed seats each time and was able to get a good seat.

ネットで取れました。何度がキャンセル拾えたので最終的に最後列取れました。
49号も3日前くらいに一気に10席くらいキャンセル出てました。
