Bangour village hospital - mental asylum - Scotland

  • Bangour Village Hospital was a psychiatric hospital located west of Dechmont in West Lothian, Scotland.
    The hospital had only been in use for a decade when it was overtaken by world events. In 1915 it was requisitioned for military use, and with the addition of temporary accommodation marquees was housing over 3,000 wounded servicemen by 1918: meanwhile the mentally ill patients were displaced to asylums around Scotland. Bangour Village Hospital reopened as a mental hospital in 1922 and it was to mark its reopening and to serve as a war memorial that the Village Church was commissioned. 1939 saw the use change again, when Bangour became the Edinburgh War Hospital. This time its capacity was increased by the building of a large annex on a site to the north west. After the war the annex became Bangour General Hospital, offering general medical services across West Lothian, while Bangour Village Hospital again reverted to use as a mental hospital.
    Bangour General Hospital was run down and closed (and subsequently demolished) following the opening of St John's Hospital in nearby Livingston in 1989. Meanwhile the wider approach to mental health was changing, with advances in medication and an increasing emphasis on "care in the community" leading to the run down and closure of many traditional mental hospitals. This process ran its course at Bangour through the 1990s and into the early years of the current century, and the last patients left the hospital in 2004, almost exactly a century after the first arrived. The following year the site was used as the location for the film "The Jacket", starring Keira Knightley and Adrian Brody. Since then it has been in the news as the subject of planning interest for development as housing, incorporating all the listed buildings on the site, and as a location for police riot training.

    Definitely a beautiful place, but the land that it is sitting on is absolutely amazing. Looks like it's up in the mountains, nice find.
    Glad you are able to find a building that was open. I like the small pieces left behind, but the bricked-up windows were probably my favorite

    • @RobsUrbanExploring

      I'm pleased you enjoyed it, they have bricked them up to stop people getting in 😁, but it's a lovely place with nice scenery. It's not in the mountains its actually one of the flatter parts of Scotland. I will have to do a video up in the mountains. If you like scenery you should watch my Elgin road trip. It passes through the Highlands 🙂

      @@RobsUrbanExploring yes I will check it out. The mountains in Scotland are absolutely amazing compared to the hills we call mountains here LOL
      Just the fact that you were up a little bit and said that's one of the flatter pieces of land proves that. That would be the mountains where we are LOL

      @@RobsUrbanExploring if I remember correctly, the sequence from The Song Remains the Same where Robert Plant rode the horse along the water and in the Hills I believe was filmed in Scotland, wasn't it? It was some absolutely beautiful land

      @@richdiscoveries I've just looked it up as I have never seen that film. According to imdb it was filmed in Loch Ness, but was also filmed in Wales which is where the castle is. Wales is similar to Scotland except we have bigger mountains 😁 the highest mountain in Scotland and the UK is Ben Nevis at 4,413ft. Snowdon in North Wales is 3,560ft it is possible for the horse riding bit to be in Scotland and then cut to Wales, it all looks the same 😁

      Thanks for watching, you are free to walk about the grounds but all buildings have fences and are fitted with mostion sensors. The whole place is prity much covered in 24rh cctv and security are right on you with in minutes asking what your upto. If you respect what they say then you should be fine.

      @RobsUrbanExploring  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the place is full of security an I presume it will be until they have renovated the old buildings into flats. They don't mind you walking about but all fences have motion sensors. There is also a special trespass law put in by the Scottish government after people had a rave there last year. There was posters saying people will be arrested if caught where they shouldn't. Happy exploring 😁

      Hi Julie it's a nice place to walk around. They have started knocking down the more modern buildings. All the rest of the buildings have fences all around an have motion sensors on them. There is cctv everywhere an on site security. But if you are just there for a walk they don't mind. Enjoy your explore.
