I remember visiting my Daddy in Rahway State Prison in the latter 1960s and early 1970s when I was a young boy. I remember, especially when crossing over the bridge hearing Simon and Garfunkel on the radio, especially God bless you please Mrs Robinson and other beautiful songs by Simon and Garfunkel Plus amongst other good 60s and 70s songs, my daddy got us back in 1973 but he died 1979. I will love him and respect him for eternity without end! I sure miss him.
Newark NJ born and raised, Rahway was a well known prison my aunt took us on visits to see her four brothers . The visiting room was wild I saw to much lol

Born in Newark, raised in Jersey City. My Uncle Pop spent seven years in Rahway after his bust as a part of the “country boys”, Uncle Frank’s Lucas’ crew!

I'm from Newark, Nj Essex county North Jersey. When I was in 9th grade, I had to complete the scared straight program in Rahway. It was crazy. Scudder Homes Newark Nj born.
My family lived on Hazelwood Avenue in Rahway. My husband did time there. You could see the prison from the house. My husband came from Plainfiel, NJ and lived in Newark too. A lot of guys knew him from the barbershop with George Clinton.
I was born and raised in Clark, NJ. I heard stories about Rahway my whole life.
Big ups Gully for keeping it 100, James Scott was a legend. New World definitely held they on weight some of the guys associated with New World is doing good...
My pops served his murder bid from a teen to his mid-30s there before he had me... He and some of his inmates including Ruben "Hurricane" Carter, the boxer, also were published authors via a book by, oh ok just got to the part where he said Hurricane and Artis got bumped off...
The Book is called "Voices From The Big House"... RIP Dad!

Damn, memories…5days in the roundhouse being housed to get transport back to my county after I won my appeal..5mo Trenton seg 7up 1 mo Trenton 1wing(hole).2years SouthWoods phase3 6house..worked in the gym with James Scott(Rajan-RiP) we used to bump heads but eventually we got a proper understanding and he taught me a few boxing tactics. I often would say Hustlers are made in the streets,Gangsters are made in the court rooms and True warriors are made behind prison walls. S/O to GullyTV for this..

I'm from Philly and know Camden well. This was an awesome tribute. I'm a boxing fan and this was informative. People need to hear more about how the justice system in America is completely trash. Some of these cops are straight up criminals themselves.
Rahway prison is not in Camden, New Jersey, it is in Rahway, New Jersey on Lawrence Street, I know this because I use to live on Lawrence across the river.
@@JustShawnie Camden has its own jail. Rahway is a state prison. I don't think anyone made the mistake of thinking it was in Camden. Especially if you watched the whole video.

"Rahway" (named "East Jerssy State Prison") is actually located in Avenel. The prison in Camden (called "Riverfront State Prison") was shut down completely several years ago.

My pops was in there thru the mid 80's. I never made it to Rahway but I stopped off at few different NJ facilities thru the 90's and early 2000's you had to become a tough man to make it thru these places and even stronger to come out and make it in the every day life as a citizen. Salute those that are still here to tell the stories and Whether they went back in or not it's all a struggle

I used ta visit Rahway every Saturday....first time I seen a lady ride an inmate in the conjugal visiting hall....SnowBall the muscle bound punk was there too....he's the reason I neva been to prison.

I grew up in the shadow of east jersey and me and my mom were on the dmv inspection line next to the prison when I was a kid and we seen Sylvester Stallone filming lock up. They were on the outside of the big yard using the wall and a fake yard to make it look like they were filming inside the real big yard. We didn’t know what we actually seen until the movie came out that’s when we realized….
Kudos to the Hardened inmates trying to help any kid stay out of The Big House, I always admired the inmates who tried , they didn’t have to do that, of course, but they did!

I remember growing up on Lawrence Street in Rahway, New Jersey with the prison right across the river and highway.
I remember the day Denzel Washington private bus came down Lawrence Street, because I was outside rollerskating in the street and I had to stop rollerskating and move out the way so Denzel Washington bus could go down to the prison to film the movie hurricane. I also remember being at the corner traffic light at Dairy Queen when George Clooney, Julia Roberts, and Brad Pitt were in the car right next to me because they were filming Ocean Eleven. The movie studios used to have apartments in Rahway Plaza because they used to film so much of the area. I grew up seeing a lot of famous people.

Loved Dwight as a boxer because i followed it heavily in that great era. Only wish he was able to get the win vs Holyfield in that great fight. Saw him at the baltimore civic center around 79-81 in childhood. Beating James Scott in rahway was quite interesting. 2 guys, one an ex offender
Use to live across the street on Randolph Ave in 70s. I was between 5 and 12. Every time I was out of line my mother use to say she was sending there😂

It was the best spot in New Jersey to do time! My bid went by so fast because you can do time there not like the prisons down south

On November 30, 1988, at the request of the citizens of Rahway, NJ, Rahway State Prison was renamed East Jersey State Prison. Residents claimed that being identified with the prison stigmatized the city and affected property values.
East Jersey State Prison is a medium-security prison operated by the New Jersey Department of Corrections in Avenel, Woodbridge Township, New Jersey.
Ironically, when the name change took place, I believe it should’ve been called Avenal State prison

Absolutely outstanding work ! Everyone is allowed to have an opinion and I have two comments regarding this video: 1) The boxing program was an extraordinary positive forum in the day- particularly at Rahway but also down in Leesburg. 2) I fully was invested in the original Scared Straight at Rahway - I don’t give a fuck what Rutgers professors concluded- those old school guys at Rahway put it out there and that program got screwed over.
Last, I want to say - I was a SPB HO at Trenton and Leesburg and I knew a lot of guys ; all colors, all cities, all crimes, doing all kinds of time, and over all these years , the one big thing I have learned, for the most part , there is not hate between races . Guys of all backgrounds find themselves in the same fucked up place and it’s not because of the guy in the cell next door.

To NJ Guys that know the system- SSCF 1&2 are now closed, Bayside Farm is now closed- and as a lot of guys know Wagner (Bordentown) is closed and CRAF - old Vroom building is closed. ( obviously added in there is Riverfront being torn down.)
Rumors inside DOC is Bayside Medium is next and even East Jersey Main( Rahway) is on chopping block.
Truthfully , bayside medium should be closed .
That place is old and a lot of those cells are in bad conditions.
No heat/ac , bad plumbing and bugs . I was there in 2019
I'm 46 now & moved to Florida 10 years ago but wow I had no idea Bordentown was closed or any of the other's besides maybe Riverfront
