@@tinfoilhatter Frank had what he called the coffin that was 6 foot long & had to have 2 guys to bring it on stage years ago . Eventually he started to use less effects but used solid state amplifiers for many years because they are or were more reliable & consistent .
He was always "MY way or the Highway". Takes a LOT of guts to go down that road for the pro's and con's of it. Go Frank!

@@EveryoneLovesGuitar as a kid, i was a lot more impressionable/suggestible, and i'm glad i didn't know how awesome frank was, then-- i always knew he was, but what he was, was a great mystery, who i thought about frequently, i mean i was a music-geek, haha, i guess i still am..i'm still finding old tracks that take me places nobody can believe, haha
I have just returned to this a year later and was blown away all over again about how intelligent and well spoken Frank is. Not just "some guitarist"(great though he is). Sadly his playing,touring days seem to be over but his testimony and mind go on. What a great man he is. Praying for you Frank and for you Craig. Frank is a class act. Master musician, great humanitarian super humble dude.
As an accomplished musician at an early age, I have witnessed everyone from America to Hendrix to Zappa. I saw Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush (countless times since) in Dayton Ohio with Mothers Finest and Humble Pie (with Frampton). I always express this one of my TOP 5 shows I have ever taken in. I was there at that show. I don't remember of Frampton in Humble Pie but do remember Humble Pie and Steve being so good as he was the leader for sure can overshadow one's thinking these days in memory. And yes Mothers Finest yes and don't forget Angel! They were good as well. 4 bands for the night! And headliner Frank and Mahogany Rush was awesome as usual. God Bless!

I saw the same show in Atlanta! They must have set up a tour with all the same bands. What a show!!! That was the first time seeing Frank. 3-4 followed.

James 4:6 states : But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
That is only one of many versus that mentions Pride !!

i was at Cal Jam 2 1978 i worked my way up to the stage cause everybody was walking away it was dark and man i was so inspired by Frank's sound and playing just blew me away.. still have that image in my mind looking up at Frank basically touching his shoes.. Really enjoyed this interveiw

He's getting into some interesting heavy theory on consciousness, imprinting and learning. By sheer coincidence I was inadvertently at Mahogany Rush first show ever - morning assembly at Westmount High. I will never forget that.

I remember the first time I heard Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush...I was in The US Air Force doing a Temporary Duty at Andersen Air Base Guam in 1974. It was warm and in the evening a lot of us would have our Dormitory doors open to the outside Balconies. I was fresh to Guam and thought I would take a night time walk on the outside Balconies and stairways ...soon I heard this fantastic Rock with guitar playing that rivaled some Hendrix. I hung out near the door where a guy was playing Mahogany Rush on his outstanding stereo ... After awhile he noticed me outside and we had a great exchange of mutual love of this Great Band and Guitar-Slinger. He invited me inside and told me about this great band. Thanks, Buddy!

No matter how hard we try, no matter how much we fight we as "Humans" are intrinsically linked to God. This is exactly why when we go astray we reach a point that we just do not really feel good about anything or anyone in life. Franks explanation about "getting back" is so important. God is light and evil is simply the absence of light.
Thanks to the grace of God we have had Franks music for all of these years. What a loss to the world it would have been for him to never understand this principle and not become who he is. We are all aware of the loss of so many artists due to not coming back.
Frank is a smart, gifted, humble, talented, interesting guy. And a fine guitar player too. 3 hours weren't too much, I listened closely to every word. I see why he likes SG guitars and had no idea he used single coil. Seems he likes a thin body and neck. If he wants a single coil they could build a neck through, or just a longer tenon. Surprised Gibson couldn't get all the details to his original guitar - possibly because modern guitarists want fatter necks/bodies?
Frank is a legend, absolutely shocked he finally finished the audio reclamation project on the Agora show, I was sure that would never come out... The price is kinda steep but this guy is worth the price he is such an amazing player, writer, artist and man !
Where I work, lots of younger guys check out or starting to be into classic rock. I'm 46, I'm talking about guys 19, 20, 23..early 20s. Van Halen, Metallica...or Led Zep that far back. Last couple months, I'm ranting on about Frank to them in the break room. Especially us being Canadian, almost makes me sad and a bit annoyed at the same time how Frank should be more known 20x over. I discovered Frank in the 80s as a teen. Supervisor at work 62, he gets a real kick, happiness, that I know Frank's music since he 20 yrs older than me. His guitar work, his view on life, a true artist no matter if it's this $$$ tonight, or this amount $, ...just an awesome guy. Cheers everyone.
That’s awesome to hear, I first heard frank in 77/78’ was in 6th grade I thinks (I’m 53) and my friend had Electric Reflections of War blasting in his bedroom when I walked in. Life was never the same lol !! That first FM&MR live album (although it isn’t completely live from what i know now) was just mind blowing ! Just wish I had been able to catch that original band live once back in the day !!!! Frank is an incredible guy no doubt, no compromise, al about the art and the music. Hoping the Agora video is successful enough that he can afford to tour or do mother album some day soon if he feels like it.
Best 100 bucks ever spent. It’s not steep. Consider just the time doing the sound. Have you seen it? it’s beautiful
I haven't picked this up yet, but have seen clips and it looks amazing, I will be grabbing once I am back to work (got laid off during Covid), no regrets of course. Was hoping toget him to autograph it on tour, will have to wait and see what happens with that...
@@326vince Not to mention that he spent 5 years to do the missing drum tracks on the DVD in his own studio plus created the software that many said couldn't be done after he talked to many in the business which was over 1 million edits to make that video !
Greg, I've heard many of your interviews. I listen to a lot of podcasts. This is the best and most profound interview I've heard in years and it combines a couple of the most profound subjects in my life: God and music.
I wasn't aware of this side of Marino's life.
His music and guitar playing are inspirational. What a great testimony he has. Some people TRULY have learned something and leave their fingerprints for the rest of us humans to follow their positive example.
I'll go look for his music to know more about him. Keep on rocking, Frank and Greg. 👍

Damn shame, I saw a NY Chiropractor release a man’s frozen shoulder.
He really developed his own style. Early on he was doing a Hendrix clone. But he really took his influences and did it his way.
And now a year later I can reduce it to this: Frank is a true Christian.

Everything Frank is saying is well thought out, insightful and grounded in sensible reality considering how he got to this place in his life. So many people talk about "God" and "spirituality" using jargon that makes it meaningless rather than a language to communicate such concepts. Jargon is just empty buzz words people toss around parroting their mentors. Frank is speaking his truth with the authority of someone who understands their truth. Most people talking about such things clearly don't know what they are talking about. You can feel it. Instead of seeing clearer it feels vague and cloudy because they don't even understand the jargon they use. It is like saying dark black. What does that mean? You cannot use another word that means the same thing to explain the other when you don't understand either.

That was an awesome interview. When I was a teenager I experimented with LSD a handful of times and that handful of times was enough. Once the doors of perception were opened they never really closed. My worldview and my perception of what was possible were changed for the better. Though my experiences were far less dramatic than Frank's I can relate.

I was 14 when Jimi Hendrix died and I was devastated.I heard Child of a Novelty and I was convinced that Jimi had " moved" into Frank.Seems silly now but I have followed him ever since,almost 50yrs or so. He is a class act,not "selling out"all these years letting his music do the talking.Special special man.

He's right about the gear industry. They're selling to blues lawyers instead of the teens and twenty-somethings who are most passionate about creating new music.
The kids now look with their eyes & don't actually try & use the pedals mostly as starting out or experiment with them ! If you look now all these pedals are boutique pedals with custom paint jobs on them that catch the eyes of the young kids & look cool I guess but don't perform like they should compared to the well known pedals of years ago with much better internals & who are still in business like MXR Electro Harmon nix & others in that time frame that were top of the line . Frank is smart enough to build his own effects & amplifiers & has years ago so we know he does how to do this stuff .
I loved the Strat story. I had a 1977 Fender American strat that was amazing. Then I bought a cheap mid 80's Squire II you know the ones, w/o the pickguard that just kicked ass and played just as good as the Strat. Weird but true. Best playing guitar I ever owned was the 1963 Gibson SG.
i know exactly what he is talking about.....i've wanted to do many things in my life...just like Frank....learned to play guitar, bass, keys, drums,I build my own guitars, amps, tools...wanted to record, build my own studio, live sound, graphic design, video editing, directing, producing etc etc...all things i wanted to do....and it's not "easy" but it's not HARD.....consequently i have enriched my life enormously because I have done the things I WANTED to do...and somewhere inside I have the gift to be able to accept that if I put my mind to something I CAN do these things...most people sell themselves short and expect to only ever be good at things that someone teaches them when in reality anyone can do just about anything...but the teacher is YOU....YOU have to take the time to teach YOURSELF anything and everything you ever need to do in your life....Frank...I get it pal...never got to be 'famous" in my 60 years as a pro musician....BUT never really wanted that...making good music is awesome in and of itself...no applause...but serious gratitude for you sharing your gift and having the patience and resolve to see the DVD project through to completion. I predict that it will be the pinnacle of your career accomplishments, and the foundation for countless future players.

just want to add....re the new live DVD...even though this concert footage was recorded in the US, this is a canadian release by a GREAT and often overlooked Canadian artist and thus needs to be nominated for a Juno award! by all rights, Frank SHOULD receive the juno for best live recording/concert film for this...as I can guarantee that there will be absolutely NOTHING else in this category that could ever even come close to what he has released. this is a lifetime achievement masterpiece and needs to be recognized as such....the sheer devotion of trying to salvage the audio track in order to release this is worth an award.....never mind the performance/musicianship of the event itself....absolutely unmatched by anything I've ever encountered in the industry. Let's make that Juno happen!!!! nomination deadlines are fast approaching...Frank REALLY deserves this.....I know he could care less about this...but in reality he would learn to appreciate it....the recognition is SOOOO overdue.

Oh how this LSD story rings true. That other world he speaks of was terror in my experience. It’s almost like that drug pulls down filters and lets you see and feel your finite mortality. I think what he means he was able to learn from the experience that the imagination is there without drugs. As good as the gigs were the bad trips weren’t worth it ... play on Frank!!!
Besides HENDRIX, and a few other FRANK was the reason i picked up the guitar, he is guitar man.

Yes he's a Christian and does not do gigs now, among many reasons, because he does not want to gig in casinos and bars where people are drunk and loud talking. He would do concerts if the audience would behave and be quiet and listen.

Music has always been my one and only faith, always saves me from myself and the world. Franks music has been my biggest playing and listening influence, always wondered what it would be like to just share a coffee. Being admittingly a guitar hero, we tend to forget they are just people getting through life like the rest of us. That said, like most of us we wonder about a higher power and struggle with the five Ws. Listening to this comforts my faith in life's most basic request, treat others the way you would like to be treated, life or karma looks after the rest! Its just energy that we have around us, its what you do with it that matters. The other takeaway after hearing this is the insight of Frank as a person and how his music came to be! I will be adding this to my creed and playing abilities, I'm feeling humbled yet inspired! Thanks Frank, you never disappoint. Thanks to the interviewer for making this happen.

If you didn't know Frank marino you do after this interview this is the best interview of what appears to be the most down-to-earth person in the industry which is why he gave them the middle finger and they made sure he never made it too far because of his beliefs and we all know the industry if we know the industry. This dude is an absolute genius! When I was first introduced to Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush 30 years ago, I didn't fully appreciate it (because I was a 14 yr punk kid), but he is most definitely one of the greatest musicians to have ever played an instrument! Thanks for this awesome interview!

Mahogany Rush. Why bands are called bands. Indeed. Just for me. That was a great time to grow up. I was looking forward to maybe seeing Frank again. Saw the Strange Universe tour as a kid. Then many more. The Black live LP tour. Trenton war memorial. Tales of the unexpected. Juggernaut. And so on. Missed him much. Was really happy he was going to play again. It sold out. Covid happening. So who knows when. Or if I’ll get another chance. Hey. The video is a god send. Canada is doing well. Here in the US. Well not to good. We have people fighting. Instead of working with eachother to fight this. Now I cannot say what will happen. They rescheduled tours. It’s optimistic. God bless you all. And go see him if we fight for eachother. And respect eachother. You’ll always be cool Frank. Cause you know what you are!

I love Frank Marino's music and guitar since 1979 when i was 12. I started playing guitar too around that time. Bought a few albums and all .. and yeah, tried my first acid in 1981, i was young but inspired. Thank you Frank for talking about the price of "boutique" material; Pedals and guitars etc.. nobody i know can afford that stuff!

This guy is a living legend of guitar.
That's why I like Frank's music. If the 20th Century management were around in Rembrandt's time they would ask him to paint to a certain size and can we make your paintings small enough to sell them as stamps!!! Commercial music has degenerated because of the mass market. When I walked into the second hand record stores with so many copies of the latest trendy artist, I knew the consumer only bought it for the here and now. I still have liked Mahogany Rush from hearing them in Australia on a least popular radio station. I was won (back in the 70s). Remember, I'm Australian and Frank, I don't believe has ever toured Australia yet I still listen to his music because of his music. I agree with everything he said about the saleability of the other artists mentioned becomes mind numbing music for me. I prefer his musical variety which is why I never ever bought AC/DC records, but I bought Mahogany Rush records!!! AC/DC came to my High School before they were famous and I didn't like them then. I liked Bon Scott in his previous band!!!

Great interview.. I agree with him about playing. I learned by ear and I just learn what I want and play it the way I want until I get it down. I play, I don't practice. I don't do scales, I play with backing music, etc. I just play!
Great guy. I was into him big time when young. He's really good too. Like he says, anyone can do this, and it's just a matter of discipline to do it. So, it's really about hard work I think.
I did LSD when I was younger and I hated it. God I was paranoid and I'm glad I've never done it again. What a terrible drug it was for me. Too each their own.

The owner of a Music Store in Longview, Texas told me to listen to your live Album. It smoked me. I actually like your version of Hendrix and Dillon better than theirs. I wore out the Cassette. Being a mediocre guitar player, at best, I got the Bass player to listen to you, too. We played all the ZZ Top, and Point Blank( remember, we are from Texas), and bought the Strange Dreams and Live Album. Now, 64 in 2022, I comb the Internet to relearn songs that you do. You are an inspiration and simply play beautifully. I have always mentioned you when talking Music with others. Being Catholic and former Alter Boy, I've enjoyed the fact that you have more to say than "sex, drugs, and rock and roll". The Song "Strange Dreams" is one of my favorite all-time songs. I wish life would have allowed me to watch and listen to you live.

I saw Frank and his band in about 1975 somewhere along there in Atlanta at Alex Coolys, Kansas was playing the same night. What a show. They were both fantastic, I was playing top 20 stuff back then. I quit in about 1979. Just had to get outa those bars. I saw too much evil. But I still love guitar, I'm 71 now. Lot of music has came and went. I was always a lead guitar fan first. I lost track of Frank. But he was the guitar style I liked. Most. Great memories.great interview.

I'm listening to an interview of frank Marino and he one very intelegent person outside of his playing awesome guitar and music
yes! i always imagined that he must be --that he ought to be very intelligent, thoughtful, and kind, but i'm often surprised at the impressions i get, from various other artists i absolutely always loved too much, perhaps, haha, i mean when i finally hear them interviewed, or whatever... i met al dimeola , with my brother, many years ago, out on the lawn, before his concert in about 1990 , we were young, in our early 20's, i guess and i was so blown away, my brother did all the talkin', we were walkin', al was awesome, it was awkward, but not for my brother, haha, i think the only awkwardness was from me, but i was impressed that at least i was a wee bit taller than al, if nothing else, haha!
if i didn't have good questions written down, and i met any of the many artists and people i admire and love, i would just look foolish and make them and myself feel awkward, haha!
haha...just as frank was speaking about humility, and dignity and everything... respecto!
I agree with Frank, that video takes away from music. I don't feel this way for live concerts, if done well. But your standard, flashy music video. The problem with the rise of the MTV era, which I watched in real time from the first day it hit the air, was that it became more about the image than the music. So many great talents did not survive the transition from the 70s into the video age of the 80s. There were some exceptions, like ZZ Top. But a lot of bands could not cut it in the video age. Not to knock Duran Duran, because I think they are good musicians and performers, but they were the perfect MTV band. They were the first band to make it in that age because they had a look to go along with the sound. They called them the Fab Five, The Beatles of New Wave.
