I really really love this. I mix on a console as well, and I really love seeing everyone else’s process of OTB mixing, and you kind of touched in this video the thing I love the most about OTB mixing: how it sets the engineer up to do something different, and in the some cases, come across the best happy accidents. PLEASE more console stuff.
this was SUPER fun to watch I wish there was a 1x1 tool for how you did the ITB mix, because I think what I definitely hear between the two is the multiband cleaning up mids and then of course the maxxbass making everything pump hard in the low end in a really nice way that would have been cool to hear in the analog mix. Maybe it's just me but it also sounds like the analog mix is hitting the master harder. Regardless this was a cool exercise to watch!
And this is why I suspect I'll be getting you to master all that soundtrack music I'm doing for our game! Because with all that beautiful analog gear + the console it'll really lend itself to helping a dynamic Orchestral mix shine!
What made you choose trying the Grill over the Oven or the Stove?? Did you just get sent one of them or try them and dig the Grill the best? Sweet vid Joel! tx :)
more please, wish analog was more adorable then digital gear. we would have a lot more open and big mixes to listen too. You said you used the API BOX for a while, did you do any comparison videos between what it sounded like with using a summing console vs when you upgraded to the Origin. I was to using the 2Bus+ and switched back to ITB and have been missing the sound ever since. I definitely do it different ITB vs summing.
Great comparison, fwiw I prefer the overall sound of the in the box mix but I suspect that in your studio it all sounds fairly different anyway and I also suspect that, should you do another in the box mix, it would come out different again. I think that every single mix has it's own identity.
Actually, what I hear is that body of the mix is missing in analog mix thou its much more airy ( I love it a lot)! Joel, thank you for your very unique ang great content!!!
Both mixes have their qualities. The console mix feels alive 3d. The ITB mix has great low end. Not my type of music usually, but the singer and song are good.
After hearing stuff through analog gear i just cant deal with plugins much anymore. it does its job but its just not the same at all. The transformers make a BIG difference in the sound.
There's something 'right' about the analog mix sound even when the balance and eq is not 100% where it should be. It has some glue, midrange richeness and top end smootheness that is really hard to get ITB

This video is my dreams come true! Cuz I always wanted to see how a song can be mixed by using analog gear. Thank you so much Joel!
Happy to hear that!
This was a sick video. More of this would be awesome. I love that SSL!

Thanks man - the Lav mic sounds good for this application.
It got smashed a bunch as I was moving around but… now that I know next time it will be better.

The Grill is impressive to say the least. Holy crap what a unit!
It’s insanely powerful. Helps you get results very quickly.

I feel you. My plugin count keeps going down. Like Andy Wallace smokes us all with just a ssl.
@@joelwanasekurmis Andy analog still?

Thank you Joel. Analog sounds way more musical and open. Well done!
Thanks so much, also having that extra ruler in the middle on cubase is a really good idea lol
I use them often because it's fast to click and zoom in on them.
