I watch tournaments primarily to learn. Sometimes I want to catch big fish, sometimes I want to catch a lot, and a I always want to do both of course! 😆So I like to watch both formats and I hope both formats always exist. I'm still stoked that we get to watch live bass tournaments, I hope it never goes away.
Wow! Thank YOU for a brilliant podcast! I am 77 years old, live in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and have fished all of my life. In my late 20's through my 40's I fished in bass clubs and local bass tournaments and jackpots...and loved it. When BASS and MLF came along I started watching tournaments and never missed a BASS tournament when I could watch a day or two. But you are correct...the vast majority of "fishermen" could not care less about tournaments. I often was criticized for fishing tournaments and "hogging" all the good spots, taking all the parking spaces at ramps, etc. Now, I still love to fish and watch tournaments to learn more about "fishing" and to stay current on equipment and lures, etc. But entertainment-wise, I much prefer the MLF format over a 5 fish limit per day. I'll "watch" the BASS tourneys for a few minutes or check who is winning and how the Oklahoma fishermen are doing...but I won't spend an hour watching the tournament. But when you and MLF are on,, I have a computer and large monitor on my desk the whole time you and Chad are on the air. Please keep up the good work. Next time you're in Tulsa I'll be happy to buy you a coffee or your favorite beverage and we'll chat. I am one of your subscribers, fyi.
Thank you so much for your excellent commentary. I’m also in my 70s, but have only fished for “fun”. I watch BASS & MLF, but enjoy MLF more. Part of the enjoyment is provided by JT. I also like the catch, weigh and release formate which I believe has less impact on the fish. Unfortunately I’m not a big fan of FFS. It is really boring to watch, but the electronic companies pay part of the freight. I advocate for splitting the season between FFS and non FFS events. Let’s find out who is truly the best AOY. Thanks again!
I like both formats. I like MLF and B.A.S.S It's all competition fishing. It's fun. I do however miss the excitement of watching the MLF guys show up to a body of water with no practice and go fishing. Just like us weekend worriers that have to try to figure them out on tournament morning. I really really miss that, really really badly. It's what made MLF amazing
I just hope MLF can continue on. I really like the all fish count, but mostly like the fact they DO NOT go in the live well, to be ran up and down the lake, and be subjected to sometimes drastic temp changes! And esp during the spawn!
That's why guys like Hank Parker,Bill Dance,Jimmy Houston, Roland Martin, Al Linder, Doug Hannon(The bass professor),Randy Blaukat, and last but not least VIRGIL WARD!. Remember all were tournament bass angler fisherman, but they didn't forget get to teach how to catch bass if you was or weren't a tournament fisherman. They taught you how to catch bass 1st ,now it it's on you to go pro with it. Live scoopers just want to turn in the correct answer in, without showing you how they got to the correct answer. They just look around for fish to target!🤷they don't have to know why that bass is there. Because they see it there and not by their bass hunting instincts.
JT you hit the nail on the head when you said the all fish format keeps you engaged. I’ve liked it since the inception. I miss seeing Squirrel compete and cringe every time The Puma is at the bubble. The guys heart is really in it. I thought the heavy hitters week was one of the best shows ever. Again … I’ve been a fan from day 1. Heartbreak for Keith Poche. See you at the next derby.
Great video I have never thought about it That way you’ve really got me thinking I’m catching fish, but I’m not getting any credit for it. Awesome video.
Thanks JT. I am a tournament fisherman and I love the format..Definitely more exciting and 100% on all your points. Plus letting the fish go is so much better for the fish especially in the spawn season.
MLF needs to put in the Sudden Death Round. When the cups were doing that it was the most exciting and watchable of all! I miss it since they went to the team format.
I just fish some club team tourneys, and fish for fun, and enjoy catching #s over targeting big fish when fun fishing. A 5 fish tourney relates more to the serious tournament guys since they fish for 5. I actually prefer watching the MLF with every fish counts. I was very glad to see MLF return to the every fish counts. MLF has an edge where it's a made for TV format, with more well known anglers. Fishing up to the final second, with all anglers knowing where everyone stands, is more entertaining. I'm not sure how the older anglers does it. It would be tough to fish as hard as you can, catching all you can until the last minute, but it fun to watch it as a spectator.
Great stuff JT I agree 100% score tracker was the greatest thing developed for bass fishing! Watching every fish counts come down to the very last second between five or six different guys keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering who will make it in!as of late, this is the only Highpoint of MLF Fishing unless that will be destroyed also.
5 bigins definitely what were looking for! But to see these guys just hammering 2 to 3 pounders, pretty cool aswell! Headed down to Vero next week fishing for the week, hopefully see ya at Three Forks or Headwaters! If so have some new worms fixing to hit the market! Throw you a few packs love for you to tryem!
Many Kansas lakes are 18” minimum, you get 3 in the boat you probably get a check. Having said that I love both formats. I’ve been fishing 5 fish tournaments since the 80’s and it’s what this old guy knows. One of our club members made it to the Elites and went with BPT at the inception so naturally I love to watch him. It’s more exciting in the all fish count format for the reasons you mentioned. Your commentary always makes me laugh. Since I’m know living in Florida love watching your channel for great Florida tips.
Thank you for saying this. What I’ve always thought. I just hate when the anglers go into “practice mode” during the tournament. Maybe they shouldn’t find out the score till the 3rd quarter. Or at least take the camera from the ones practicing
Excellent breakdown and you literally described me. It’s literally two types of fishing, big fish live and eat separately from the smaller fish. I personally love the all fish count, especially when it’s really close. I think the better fisherman can catch more fish than those who fish for 5 big bites a day. I’ll admit I’m just an avid fisherman and do not enter tournaments. I’m a weekend warrior.
5 fish is boring af for live. like today, final day bassmaster Lake Murray and I don't even have to watch cause Walters is going to win. I thought I preferred 5 fish until BPT tried it and I find myself enjoying it a lot more now that all u cn catch is back. I mean we have both so enjoy both. Idg why people always feel rthe need to "take a side" or have to like one or the other. I just love bass fishing regardless.
Both formats are good, just differant. I would like to see all catch, keep and release later done away with. Catch, weigh, and immediatly release on the spot is the way to go.
Easy answer... Florida/Texas and places with Giants do a 5 fish limit. Places like Erie, Champlain and places with numbers of fish do every fish count. It's that simple. Do what makes sense for the body of water and time of year. If the points are counted the same, then there is no need to only have 1 way of skinning a cat.
I prefer 5 fish tournaments. In an all-fish tournament with a set weight limit is fine until you get to the championship day and zero weights and start all over again not fair to the guy who figured it out in the early rounds only to lose it on championship day.
Good perspective! I have a couple of questions. Do you think it makes much sense to cater so much to people that don’t study the sport, spend money at tackle shops or invest in the sport in any way? Even though the vast majority doesn’t follow bass fishing I’m undecided if it makes sense to sell our sport to people that don’t care about it anyway. Secondly. Do you think people watch fishing for entertainment or are we even clear on why people watch? I really believe your customers are the best advertisers . I hope we don’t neglect our core audience. I feel like that’s what is happening.
I like every fish counts for watching, it makes it more entertaining and keeps my interest. Plus with the anglers moving above and below the cut line, every fish counts creates more drama, anglers don't know if they made the cut till time is up.
I love the catch, weigh, release format either way but I agree that watch every fish counts is way better. I think that they could make a separate score tracker for 5 fish limit at the same time. Make it so anglers can win for top five also maybe like Heavy Hitters with big fish of the day. Have a prize for top five in every tournament that way fisherman can chose which way they want to try and get to the top. Maybe 50/50 split at getting into the knockout round but then only one championship day all count total weight. Just something for both styles at same time. Im sure there is a way since your releasing either way.
I'm surprised the tournament anglers have such a small part of the pie...I thought with high school tournaments, college tournaments, bfls, weekend tournaments, team tournaments, Toyotas, invitationals, all the other tours and all the way up to the pros...that we were more than a small part of the overall market. I always looked at it as selling the "dream" of being a pro was a big part of it. All the pros on the BPT are awesome anglers, but all of them can catch fish pretty regularly and if they find a big school they can run away with it like DC did in the Redcrest. I can see why commentating to the score tracker may not be as exciting with the "5" format, but if an angler finds a big school, but is limited to the biggest 5, every angler is still in it...even bank beaters may run across a good stretch. If you're in the lead, you never feel safe because all the anglers are good enough to find big fish, so the competition never ends for the angler. Anyway, that's my 2 cents...which really doesn't amount to anything. Congrats on all the successes you've had in the industry...it's a tough business to be in. tightlines JT!
Agree on all points. I was pissed when they went back to 5 fish. Every fish counts separates MLF from every other league, it turns it into a fishing tournament and not a big fish tournament. If I had to pick a tournament format to fish it would be MLF.
I like both, but I really enjoyed the 5 fish tournaments with score tracker. Them needing big bites and knowing where they stood in standings was great television.
JT, you do a good.job at announcing. Btw. I like both. If someone doesn't, then just dont watch but dont bitch about it either. I dont watch site fishing tournaments, same with all FFS tourneys. BORING. I just watch for some of the latest techniques.
JT. I 100% agree. EFC is far better for top professional league. The vast majority of bass fans do not fish tournaments at any level and do not understand how 5FC makes any sense. Additionally watch BASS Elite and MLF BPT stream and it is not close. BPT is much more entertaining
Agree. Agree. But if it’s keep fish, take them away from their area of the lake and weigh them 10 miles away and release them all at the ramp go to just 3 fish needed to take to the scale. Hate seeing 5 breeding girls drug from their nest in my Florida lakes to weigh in a different location is ridiculous. And yes I have tournament fished. And won a two day on Okeechobee. But done with the chasing the tourney rainbow.
Nice video JT, I'm a fisherman, I like walleye and walleye tournaments, but we know how many of those are on TV, and I've enjoyed watching MLF, but that 5 fish, I'm not a fan, if they would keep that, I won't watch, they are calling winners by the 3 period now, not really fun to watch, watching someone down in 1 period come back and put a run on 1st place is exciting, if it nothing else, make the minute weight change from known fish size in a resevoir, but at least keep the all fish count format, or I'll tell you, I won't watch anymore, but that's just me.
The original MFL with no practice, equal and limited electronics and every fish counts with live scoring was by far and away the best format for spectators. So here’s the thing, we already have bonuses for Big Bass of the day, so why not do every fish counts, but have bonuses for best 5 and Big Bass of the day?
I like every fish counts. Especially once they catch them weigh and put them back. Very low fish deaths and more opportunities for those fish to spawn and put hundreds of new babies in the lakes so the population grows.
For me I like 5 best fish... Many fisherman can catch 1 and 2 pounders that count all fish.. you get into a big area that it's all 1 and 2 ponders ... yuk... It's just like catching 50 little bluegill.... so I dont like all fish count..
5 fish and the mlf format is apples and oranges. The mlf format , if they'd leave it alone, has a place in the industry. It can all work, and actually work together, to be a big boost to how fishing is viewed within the sponsor/funding world (which is the only way to get a foothold in the real money in the entertainment industry) but egos on all sides have made it an us vs them thing. And it shouldn't be.
my 0.02 , MLF should keep everything BUT your best 5 fish. Count and weight all of the fish but your can only count 5. The idea of chasing 2.5bls schools no-longer count..
I haven't watched one full day of bpt in the last two years. I like all the fish counts. But bpt changes every year, so i kind of done with the changes every year. Next year its going to change again. Mlf should stop changing every year. I'll get behind it again, Until then good luck to mlf.
I absolutely love the every fish counts format. MLF, in my opinion, is way more exciting than the BASS ELITE Series. I watch both, but after awhile of watching the ELITE. Im done with it and moved on to something else. When im watching MLF, i NEVER turn it off. I watch every second of every tournament. When FBD stole the first two days of every tournament, I've been absolutely lost those two days. If he doesn't have the sponsors to air the first two days. He needs to stop fishing and concentrate on selling his product to the world. Him and his sidekick, Gary Klein, both need to hang it up and start recruiting sponsors so they can air the first two days of the tournament. While im at it, and on a roll, FBD needs to back off of James Watson and leave him alone. He needs to reinstate him immediately and make a public apology to him. That's all just my opinion.
I think if you want to gain more viewers from people who don't necessarily fish but love the entertainment you need to go with the all fish counts format. There's a lot more people that identify with that then the five fish limit I think the argument is ridiculous.
I similar to Harry below fished clubs 5 fish tournaments for years and then @ Axtons on Lake Fork they came up with new idea in 2009 where we had five fish limits on Saturday and the top ten fished Sunday with a judge who weighed our fish and all fish count! On Fork you have 16-24 in slot so we got to "keep" our 5,6 7 pounders and they counted for a total weight like todays mlf. You talk about fun as you may guessed we had 76 pounds and came in second on Sunday . Best most fun tournament I ever fished and my partner and I have won several 5 fish also but not as fun as every fish counts and in live 5 fish coverage can be very boring sorry .
5 fish is archaic. Casual fans aren’t into weigh ins. How impressive is holding up your two beat bass on the Sabine? They’re holding the sport back beyond tournament anglers. The MLF formula is great. Maybe mix in a couple 5 fish tournaments a season on lakes with larger fish for some variety. Watching a 5 fish tournament where there’s no chance of movement after the first day is boring. The MLF format is the future, but the MLF doesn’t appear to be part of that future. At least as long as guys are still…Fishing Boat Docks.
Every fish counts is super boring. People get out 40lbs and it’s a snooze fest. Fishing for 1.5 to 2lbers is also boring. Give me 5 big bites a day over catching a bunch of dinks
It doesn’t really matter anymore, I’ve been fishing tournaments for 30 years and will continue to fish tournaments, but this FFS has ruined fishing. I’m definitely not watching it anymore. I’m done with it. I actually enjoy just going fishing for fun more than tournament fishing anymore. 5 fish tournaments are definitely better though.
I no longer watch tournament fishing because it's become ridiculous to me. It's because of things like this. If people have to keep telling how great their product is, then it's not great. I have no dog in this fight. I have watched BASS since 1982. Are they perfect? Nope, not even close. I liked the old MLF before the split. It was entertaining, and I didn't care they split, But now, every damn time I see ANYTHING about MLF, they are trying to sell you on their latest and greatest idea. MLF changes their mind like politicians. It's exhausting to try and keep up with. MLF was a good idea, but it's not working. It's not just MLF; It's BASS, too. Neither of these organizations understands what is happening in the real world. You said it yourself. You thought the world was tournament-angling, and it's not. The MLF business model is so flawed it's ridiculous. "We are going to get soccer moms to watch and people who play golf". Do they really think a soccer mom will think wow, that's cool. I want to buy a $100,000 bass boat? Why do bowling, skateboarding, cycling, etc, get more views on TV and bigger sponsors than MLF? Because it's accessible to the average person. MLF and BASS have sponsored products they have to push. That's the way it works. But when the products you need to do what you are watching on TV cost as much as bass fishing does, people tune out. That's obviously why kayak fishing exploded. It's more accessible. Now kayaks have to watch out because they become just as expensive as bass boats and that will turn people off too. Just look at the TV coverage of BASS and MLF. There are TH-camrs with way more views than MLF or BASS are getting. Think about that. There are kids with iPhones getting more views than a massive production with huge budgets. It's just like what the people who support FFS say all the time. Times have changed, and this is the feature get used to it. If people want to learn or be entertained by fishing, they go to TH-cam and look for people they can relate to. Tournament anglers relate to BASS and to MLF. So they should stop chasing people who are never going to watch the sport of tournament angling. Let's face it: unless you put girls in bikinis bass fishing on TV, The average person looks at watching tournament fishing like watching Paint Dry, no matter if it's five bass or every fish counts. So MLF and BASS should sell themselves to the people who will watch, and that's tournament anglers.
Every fish format sucks for fans. We have gone to bass weigh-ins are whole life to see 5 big fish!! Now that’s non existent with mlf. So yes mlf “weigh ins” suck man. I mean look at redcrest versus the classic. 9 out of 10 people would rather go to classic
5 fish all day. It might be more exciting to you as a broadcaster with all fish count,, but as a viewer its boring watching them catch dinks. With this all fish counts, the anglers know they dont need to target giants to win. If they catch one its a bonus for viewers. I like to watch all fishing to learn the techniques. But, i havent watched an MLF since the first derb at Kissimmee. Just to boring.
5 fish with a live weigh in are better for the fan side of the sport and better for fisherman ego/flex....catch weigh release every fish is no doubt better for fish care....but the positive impact is negligible....but with my BOYDCOTT firmly in place.....Free James Watson!!
All I know is just in the last few days I’ve made the decision to stop watching the “sport” of bass fishing. I don’t like where it’s at & the direction it’s going. Seems to be becoming more & more progressive & liberal wout being political & it’s struggling. What I hate the most is BASS has become the business for spoon fed teenagers, entrepreneurial retirees. It’s no longer attainable for the blue collar person to pursue or enjoy when all BASS wants to do is create the next KVD and promote young spoiled rookies that wouldn’t be there w/out tech. & the way MLF handled Marty stone, the Cayuga event, last years AOY and season finale with KVD was jaw droppingly terrible. I’m just going to focus on not following the influencers, content creators, the leagues and instead focus on my fishing and my life.
It's hard to take your opinion serious with no bias because you are on a payroll. This is like Zona saying 5 in the LiveWell is better. As a company man you are towing the line............
Made respect for you man but.. we all know you can’t tell the truth. So to be completely honest this opinion is extremely biased bc we all know what happens if you don’t say what Boyd what’s you to say… P.s #fbd babyyy!
Holy shit been wondering where u been J.T u big goof... What the hell I was UNSUBSCRIBED!?!?!🤯.. idk how the hell that happened I've been subbed for YEARS.... LITERALLY!!! Weird ... But glad you came across my feed . Subbed back!!!
I watch tournaments primarily to learn. What about the health of the fish not being hauled around in a livewell all day or being released in a completely different area of the lake
No doubt the variable 2 pound limit is awesome! Allowing scopeadoping not so much!
Edwin Evers red crest win proves to me that every fish counts is awesome to watch.
Fishing Boat Docks, buddy.
Great video I have never thought about it That way you’ve really got me thinking I’m catching fish, but I’m not getting any credit for it. Awesome video.

Agreed! But I am curious if MLF has the stats that show if every winner in the every fish counts format, also had the 5 biggest.

I just love anything to do with bass fishing. Love MLF and Bass Master elites!
I like every fish counts for watching, it makes it more entertaining and keeps my interest. Plus with the anglers moving above and below the cut line, every fish counts creates more drama, anglers don't know if they made the cut till time is up.
Boyd is the problem. He brings inconsistent rules that constantly change.

I very much prefer watching every fish counts. MLF could do a mix of formats per year or even do both in the same tournament.
3 fish limit max
I personally think weigh and release is better
Being a non tournament bass fisherman I prefer the all the fish count rule as that’s how I fish.
I totally agree.
Agree.
Agree with MLF is MUCH more interesting. Look at the results this yr. I think you will see the eventual winner also had the 5 biggest fish.
The original MFL with no practice, equal and limited electronics and every fish counts with live scoring was by far and away the best format for spectators. So here’s the thing, we already have bonuses for Big Bass of the day, so why not do every fish counts, but have bonuses for best 5 and Big Bass of the day?
Get rid of FFS and Boyd Ducket!
I watch both and I agree it needs to be a 2 pound minimum no matter where they go
I like every fish counts. Especially once they catch them weigh and put them back. Very low fish deaths and more opportunities for those fish to spawn and put hundreds of new babies in the lakes so the population grows.
I watch em both for sure. Just glad to be able to watch. But if I had to pick… I’d go 5, that’s how my dad did it, that’s how America does it! 🇺🇸
I prefer every fish and no practice and 2# min. Way more fun to watch.
Not going over as well as yall would like. 5 fish is winning. Y'all have some great anglers but all you can catch will go by the wayside eventually.
All in JT!! Money 💴 video
I haven't watched one full day of bpt in the last two years. I like all the fish counts. But bpt changes every year, so i kind of done with the changes every year. Next year its going to change again. Mlf should stop changing every year. I'll get behind it again, Until then good luck to mlf.
I think ever fish count’s would be better with a 18” minimum. Some guy catching 50 15” bass on Guntersville is boring
I like the weigh ins in bass but i dont like the fact MLF weighs and puts back the bass they arent streessed out in a LW all day so im torn.. lol
With FFS being so easy & the bass having no chance, a 5 fish limit will take 15 minutes 😂 may consider a 30 fish limit
5 fish all day people say boring. They still catch all the fish they can
I think the best would be 5 fish catch wiegh release
I love the fact that we have the choice to watch both formats, I love it all.
Weigh in tournaments should be banned. 20 dead fish floating at a Kissimmee boat ramp Sunday morning.
BASS needs to bring you over 100%
I still try to get 5... go JTK ✌️.
I've noticed the the commentating was less exciting with 5 fish
5 fish is archaic. Casual fans aren’t into weigh ins. How impressive is holding up your two beat bass on the Sabine? They’re holding the sport back beyond tournament anglers. The MLF formula is great. Maybe mix in a couple 5 fish tournaments a season on lakes with larger fish for some variety. Watching a 5 fish tournament where there’s no chance of movement after the first day is boring. The MLF format is the future, but the MLF doesn’t appear to be part of that future. At least as long as guys are still…Fishing Boat Docks.
MLF sux
Every fish counts is super boring. People get out 40lbs and it’s a snooze fest. Fishing for 1.5 to 2lbers is also boring. Give me 5 big bites a day over catching a bunch of dinks
All fish count
All bass count is better. I miss it
5 fish.
Yea whatever pays you. Dustin and wheeler are your heros bud! Lol
The MLF format is better tv...
Yes no comparison
5 fish all day. It might be more exciting to you as a broadcaster with all fish count,, but as a viewer its boring watching them catch dinks. With this all fish counts, the anglers know they dont need to target giants to win. If they catch one its a bonus for viewers. I like to watch all fishing to learn the techniques. But, i havent watched an MLF since the first derb at Kissimmee. Just to boring.
Hey JT, Grow a pair and talk about MLF allowing the culling of DEAD BASS in BFL and TOTOTA series!!!
FBD!
Definite conflict of interest in this opinion. Say something different than every fish counts and ole Boyd will show you the door.
5 fish with a live weigh in are better for the fan side of the sport and better for fisherman ego/flex....catch weigh release every fish is no doubt better for fish care....but the positive impact is negligible....but with my BOYDCOTT firmly in place.....Free James Watson!!
5 fish is better but the problem is #fbd dude needs to be locked up for theft by deception
JT.. be careful brother. You’re gonna out yourself of a job. You’ll end up like Watson here soon bubba😂😂😂
Done with MLF. It sucks, hope it sinks....
Why are mlf pros leaving mlf and bassmaster elites aren’t leaving to giro mlf
Made respect for you man but.. we all know you can’t tell the truth. So to be completely honest this opinion is extremely biased bc we all know what happens if you don’t say what Boyd what’s you to say…
P.s #fbd babyyy!
