Sam Walton was big into bird hunting. He and my grandpa use to go bird hunting quite a lot. When you were in the graveyard I can see my dads headstone as you were looking around. Nice video

I enjoy bird hunting as well. That's best that I captured your dad's headstone. You'll have to leave a time stamp and a general direction on the screen so we can see. Thanks for sharing that.

I work for Walmart for 11 years and Walmart culture comes from Sam. He was a very humbled and down to Earth guy. They didn't believe in living "high on the Hog" and the nicest and most expensive thing they ever bought was a new Lincoln Town Car for Helen at Bob Maloney Ford/Lincoln/Mercury and it was a base Trim car.
Sam and Helen were great people that you'd never suspect had money if you didn't know them personally, so the basic funeral and headstones are of no surprise.
I've met Helen, but never Sam.
They were from a different generation that absolutely took care of property and respected every dollar.
I graduated from the Sam M Walton Business college and it's a fine college that pumps out top tier grads.
I just wish more people knew of how much Sam and Helen did for the poor and such here locally. They never bragged or took credit for any big donations or small donations. In fact lots of money that was donated to Global Charities was strictly to remain anonymous. The Walmart story is very neat and the American dream come true and gives hope to all of us. Sam was a very smart man and would help anyone that needed help if they were down.

I believe you're right. He lived simply compared to how he could have with the amount of money he had. He served his country and was an American hero. He is the epitome of the American Dream. I do think he cared about people and when you visit the museum you'll certainly learn a lot about him.

OH MY WORD!! I was 16 when I left home and moved to Bentonville in 1978. I worked at the GoldKist poultry plant. I walked everywhere you could that back then because the town was pretty small. I lived right down the street from there.Had many a meals at that soda shop and shopped at that first Waltons. I thought it was the greatest thing back then. I loved hanging out on the square. I spent a lot of time just sitting around there and enjoying the peace and quiet and the beautiful scenery. On the weekend I spent many nights just walking around there till 12:00 - 1:00a.m. just hanging out all by myself.I loved it. I truly miss those days but, I live in Florida and I heard from friends Bentonville is nothing like it was back then. They said the town has really grown. It's been 30 years or so since I've been there last. My first bank account was at the old mercantile bank. I remember the lawyers offices there I believe it was John and Shirley Rice. I worked for them when I was 17, I took care of Shirleys mother. I grew to love that woman. It's amazing seeing this place. Sure brings back a lot of fond memories.

Sam and his brother seemed like such good caring people with good intentions until his passing and things slowly and dramatically changed, and sadly not exactly looking like for the better.
It's a likely story that has happened to many times when the corruption within the government of evil greed takes over sadly turning them into corporations of crap.

This is so interesting. When I moved to Texas in 1982 my next door neighbors were from Bentonville, AR. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest so I never heard of Walmart. I digress...my neighbor’s dad was an early partner of Sam Walton and was able to retire at 42 in the late 70’s. When they moved back to Arkansas they would pick me up in their limo like I was important. It used to crack me up bc people were trying to figure out if I was famous. 😂😂😂. I agree that Walmart has changed a lot. The stories I heard from my friend’s dad were very down to earth and actually kind of boring-read normal. The kids are another deal. Wal-Mart may be a corporate giant now, but they started off as "the little man." Sam Walton began his life with a dream, and it ended with him being a millionaire. I also understand that Sam did his tours of the new stores every year, for the last 30 years of his life. He even took the time to yuck it up with the stores' employees. I don't hear any executives doing this nowadays.

    • @RhettyforHistory

+Joshua Brooks You're right about that. I think he was a people person thru and thru but was also very business conscious. He knew how to offer something good and he beat the competition doing it. That's really what the American dream is all about. Just think if some of those other retail companies had treated him right there may not be a Wal-Mart or Sam's.

If my family was that wealthy I dout I would be on an experimental plane. I would get a nice sturdy well built not huge but comfy home in the Pine Barrens, New Jersy., with dogs & cats & I'd still help out at the Salvation Army.

Thanks for uploading very interesting. I looked up his Son because he was 58 that is relativity still young. He co founded The Children's Scholarship Fund, providing tuition scholarships. He has a Son 31 named Lukas Walton born 1986 by his second Wife Christy Walton. John Walton was killed in an airplane crash. He installed a part on his plane improperly which made him not able to control the planes altitude. Now that I think about it I remember hearing about his plane crash in Jackson, Wyoming on the news.

10:07 John Thomas Walton served in the US Army (Green Beret) Special Forces in Vietnam. His Unit was Forward Observer, to gather intel by conducting Long Range Recon Patrols.
There is little info on his marriage but he has a son named Lukas. His death was caused by Mechanical Issues on a experimental plane. When he died his family Net-worth was estimated at 18Billion. What really gets me is that here lies three billionaires with tombstone that only cost several hundred dollars. I may sound disrespectful, but dam after going through some really nice cemeteries I would expect more then this.

+Cemetery Devil I would expect all of them to have something more grand. There were bigger and nicer ones in the cemetery but they were the only ones with flower beds around them. I would bet someone from Wal-Mart was doing that. As far as Sam and Helen it seems fitting as they were simple people and really didn't seem to live extravagant lives. The kids seemed a little different and they seem to. I'm surprised there isn't anything marking John as a veteran though. Thanks for all the extra information on his son!

RhettyforFun no sir! Not in the south it didn’t!!!! Even if a woman in the south back in those days needed just a jug of milk or loaf of bread and was only gonna be gone 15 min then you can bet before she stepped out her front door she was gonna be completely fixed up with her hair done, makeup complete to include her lipstick and a Church quality dress with matching shoes.
It was instilled in young girls and ladies of all families growing up in the south during those times that if they were stepping out the front door and were going to be seen by the public then she was gonna be in her Sunday best!
My wife grew up in Mississippi but her parents are both from Arkansas and I have seen and heard her mother more than once tellling her to get fixed up before running to the grocery. Her mother still does this today and she is nearly 80 now

I worked for Walmart in 1978 . I was fired from that job after the crew set the new store up . I will tell you this I felt that Walmart didn't do me right one bit . I know that when people dont do me right they end up dying . I did write to Sam Walton about this to warn him about this . He soon died some years latter . I dont feel any sorrow for this greedy old man . He got what he deserve . GOD did it not me . The sad thing this was not the only case this had happened . Sam Walton is in hell now . GOD put him in his place . What did happen that day was Walmart wanted me to drive 6 hrs away to pick up some shelving at another store . I would not do it because I was on my 3rd shift or work at the Wamart store and I was to tired to go any longer . I just got done working a 32 hrs of hard labor and they wanted me to drive 12 hrs . The hell with that . The set up managers got mad at me and made an excuse to fire me . There excuse was that I was stealing .

+Jondavid Bristow I had the misfortune of having to work at the Tire & Lube Center at Wal-Mart for 6 months between real jobs in 2002. The employees are mostly single moms and trapped in a vicious cycle.
I got into it big time with the manager because I was fixing flats for fellow Wal-Mart employees on my breaks and 1hour "lunch" So I started giving them good used tires and mounting, balancing them for free. The level of incompetence was staggering. NEVER take your vehicle to a Wal-Mart for an oil change or tires. It was standard practice to not change oil filters difficult to access to get that 15 minute guarantee. Out the door! was the motto.
