On Water Police Boarding During a Charter! How Would You React?

- One of the most contentious parts of boating/fishing is law enforcement (whether it's marine fisheries police, local police or the Coast Guard) boardings. Many fishermen/boaters absolutely despite it. I once witnessed a very well-known local Captain absolutely ream an Officer who had boarded his vessel.
In this video, we document an under 7 minute boarding by a local to us (Shelter Island Police and I believe the female Officer is a NYS DEC Officer) law enforcement agency. I offer my opinion of these types of stops/checks in the video; what's your opinion?

Well done & that's the correct way of handling that situation John! They are just doing their job.
John, I agree with you. They’re just doing their job
Agree 100%. So much abuse of size and retention regulations. Frequently observe this.
Oh and I always ask for a sticker for my boat to show I was boarded and passed with flying colors. I think they ( the police) are an absolute necessity and part of the whole process.❤️
That"s their job. Be courteous and let em do their inspection and move on. ❤❤❤
Also ask them about where people are catching as they have good info on that. 👍👍👍
Never thought about your second point.
I’m with you …100 percent…I’m a long time kayak fisherman…and I’ve been stopped.. all good
John agree. We need them .
It's nice to be nice...it pays off in the long run. 👍
Hey don't shame the cat! She's a natural beauty!
It all depends on HOW they board. I'm in the Caribbean and over here they're not known for being the friendliest.
It could have been the new boat that caused the boarding. I used to go to work in the wee hours of the morning through a very bad neighborhood, the police knew me by my vehicle and never bothered me, the first day I had a different car I got pulled over. IDK if it actually mattered on the water, it just brought back landlubber memories for me...
It's rare that I disagee, but a "safety" inspection as a prelude to search, which is exactly what it is, throws probable cause requirements out of the window. Imagine being pulled over driving your vehicle for a general "safety" inspection. Folks would be in an uproar, why is being on a boat any different? I absolutely support LE and FWC (our wildlife LE here in FL) but I do not support this type of policing. Just my $.02 but the way you handled it was spot on, as it should be!
I hear exactly what you’re saying but I’m torn on this one since there are so many poachers out there. Actually seeing them poach is harder than catching them by surprise, but your point is an excellent one
The idea that someone should get in legal trouble for a fish that’s 1/4 inch short. Our federal law enforcement is letting thousands of people illegally enter our country. I think people should Obey fishing regulations, but the government shouldn’t make the laws so difficult to follow. Here in florida the regulations for what in season, lengths ect…. Constantly change. Not only that some fish can be incredibly hard to identify, sometimes having to be sent to a lab to identify by genetic testing to see if someone broke the law.
I would not have a problem with it. Frankly, i would like to see more of a presence out on the Long Island sound.
was right there Friday and got boarded as well. Could not have been nicer or more professional. CG out of Montauk
Great video as always.
Great video John Yes the have a job to do and did it effectively
Absolutely done well....
I don’t mind the check if they’re quick. I was in moriches bay last week and they checked every boat from east moriches to west of center moriches
Hey Beau!
100% agree, you’re a class act my friend. They are there doing a job, you don’t like it don’t go out.
I like police and coast guard, and bay constables. DEC not so much. In my experience they seem to get pissed off if they can’t catch you with a violation.they have definate tudes and I don’t appreciate it. Those guys I would love to send on your to a tough neighborhood here in the 5 boroughs and see how fast they would change their attitudes!!
I'm pretty sure the female cop was actually DEC
@@jiggingjerks Yes she is.
Very odd that they would stop and board someone while they're running a charter. Generally, in the northeast, they hit hard in May and June when people first hit the water looking for obvious safety issues with vessels at the beginning of the boating season, then spend the rest of the summer looking for impairment. Florida (FWC) is probably the worst in the country for aggressively and needlessly hassling boaters and anglers (see literally hundreds of videos on YT as reference) but in contrast, I have to say the folks that boarded you seemed quite nice. Delaware (DNREC) is probably the 2nd worst. The conservation police know where the poaching goes on, it's not on a private charter with a guy running GoPro. These stops don't accomplish anything real for conservation. Hit the bad guys, not the good guys.
They aren't going to mess you anymore, they know that you are in compliance and too high profile to be out blatenly breaking the law.
They were looking for a specific person when they rolled up, probably looking for someone they had dealt with before that they knew didn't have a license and was probably convicted of poaching.
They need to be out messing with the draggers that are killing fishing for the rest of us.
Most of the game enforcment folks follow the bigger TH-cam, IG, Tiktok people in their area.
I have no problem with authorities boarding. I think your approach is the right one. Having said that, a 19 inch fish that just makes it on the line can potentially shrink once bled and dead and become a 18.85 inch fish. Interested to hear your take on that scenario. Tight lines!
I'd have to measure a 19 life and then at end of day. I've honestly never thought about this or knew this happens
@@jiggingjerks I don't know for certain as I never tested but rather assumed. It would be good to know with certainty.
I guess finding Robert wasn't a priority.
Hahahaha, good point
John, when you use your live well as a fish box does the live well start to get a nasty fish odor after a while?
I stopped using mine to store fish and use a cooler instead for that reason
Not yet it hasn’t! Then again, fishing has been so slow it’s not gotten much use :)
Frankly they should make a stop on some of the charter boats. But since I'll only speak of individuals I have seen the ticket book come out on other boats. And for what? Small Porgy's etc. Is it really worth it.
It seemed line you were telling her rules she didn't know about😂. I am surprised they didn't tie off to you seems risky to leave her on your boat alone.
Great video
Perfect handling. How would I react? Hopefully the same 😇. Sometimes I’m tired headed in and don’t want to deal with it, but it is what it is. I have witnessed shenanigans. I’ve seen a 15 pound red snapper caught and I swear I heard it hit an ice chest and I yelled out to the guy you release that fish right? He said he did, but I think he released it into his cooler.
I search them out in april just to get it out of the way
If they want to find something they will.
She didn't mention anything to you.. I could be wrong I would need to look it up but I don't think those life vest you showed were offshore pfd. I thought when taking clients they needed to be type one with reflective tape.. I didn't notice it...
I've been boarded by CG and never raised that as an issue. Something to look into.
@@jiggingjerks I definitely don't want to see you get a ticket.. especially over something that minor..
I would have had them on a high speed chase in my topwater 120.....
I prefer not to be bothered.
Screw them
Female cop not bad looking
