Awesome video, I love how these turned out. That brown fur looks great.
I did something similar to your tutorial for the ice blue/grey with my wolves. When I looked online for some inspiration, I noticed that grey wolves actually have a good chunk of black and multiple different shades of brown in their fur (usually black/dark grey near the top, going to dark brown below that and lighter brown below that), so I did things slightly different to try to imitate that. I started with a lighter colour basecoat, just like you did. My next step was to put a very thick and heavy horizontal strip of black near the top, going from the front of the mini all the way to near the end of it's tail , and then a strip of dark brown below that around the tops of the shoulders, and then a strip of a lighter brown immediately below that, partway down the shoulders and belly of the wolves. It looked really ugly at this step. I then did a nuln oil wash on the mini, to darken the recesses and help soften this contrast, and then I started drybrushing, except I started with darker colours and progressively went lighter, ending in a slightly off-white. Each layer softened that hard black or brown contrast compared to the lighter colour fur, and I ended up with a result I really liked. It still had small hints of black, dark brown, and light brown within the fur similar to wolves in nature, while being predominantly grey. I was also able to create a bit of variety really easily in the look of them by varying the placement and amount of black and browns I put on them early on, as the later steps soften the effect.
The sculpt of these wolves really lend themselves to techniques like drybrushing. They are some pretty fantastic models, and were a lot of fun to paint. It's a good thing I have more of them to do.

Hey, after seeing the fur being painted, i was wondering how could one paint the iridescent colors found on the tuchus off a fly.
Like that black with purple and green shine. Or beetle-style with green carapace and bleu/ red/ orange shine.
The Gladewyrm from the Endless Spells: Sylvaneth and/ or maybe The wardroth beetle from Alarielle the Everqueen
could be good candidates to receive this treatment.

This is something we may well end up trying on our wings of our lockdown project's big first mini! I'm yet to try colorshift/similar, but may well give them a go.
I think if you're not a Jesus level painter a good middleground is to perhaps blend into the colour shifters in a particular area (or dull them outside of that area with washes, etc) to control where they shine from, a little. Otherwise it's good old fashioned smart colour use and blending!

That's exactly the intent with these, and why we've made them in a way which shouldn't be paint-specific, they're there for future reference for forever :)

amazing! would a zenithal prime over black work well or is the solid white prime a better way to go here? would apothecary white be a good easy strarting base for the gray blue wolf?

Would you use the same idea for beasts with a bigger area of skin to fur?

    • @ArtisOpus

Absolutely James! Skin colour is your choice, but you could work from the same basecoat as the fur, and go in the same, or a different direction wit hthe highlights, as long as you have the same base (often dark/mid brown) it works out nicely :)

I have watched so many of your videos, and I just never seem to get anything from them. And I realized today that I can't understand half of what you're saying. I'm American so the accent creates a slight barrier but you quickly mumble so much of what you say that I'd have to rewind your content constantly to comprehend it.
