You'd think the unmotivated cuckoo mum would lend a hand...err beak. Somehow the evolutionary desire of the parent's to be motivated towards the whole parenting behavior has been lost, but never to return?? Cuckoo is usually 2-3 times larger than host bird and need to fledge within 20+ days. It needs 2-3 times more nutrient within similar nesting period, if there is competition it will be malnutrition.
The most aggressive chick(s) get the most food. Other nestmates suffer malnutrition, constant pecking, cannibalism, as well as theft of chicks to feed other bird's chicks. It's rough out there.
I don't think survival rate is high , and is very normal, different species , the voice the way of asking food ... so many factors get in this situation ,but nature knows exactly what is doing 🤔

That nest is so open. A crow, hawk, owl can easily spot that.
Most nests are open, as predators know, they are not hard to find. Mortality rates are high for all nests nest failures are also common.
