    The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

      @@Dion_Mustard Although I loved Florence, the group (with Diana) never lost its spark for me. They continued to amaze me as they evolved their look and music repertoire to a higher level of 'grown up' elegance. The DMF group was outstanding (I still enjoy their music the most); however, for me there was a different kind of positive spark when Cindy stepped in.

    • @Dion_Mustard
      @Dion_Mustard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jobucats2166 I kind of see what you are saying but ultimately for me FLO was the Soul of the group..she was the Etta James of the group...she had raw power and emotion in her voice..she was unique and when Berry fired her (unfairly), Mary was lost, and Diana was just determined to become a super star. Diana's love and passion for the group dwindled. Ultimately she and Berry had the plan to become more than Motown. Flo and Mary became irrelevant to them. So I will stick by my guns and say the best Supremes music was with Flo between 1962-1965.

I didn't know Diane growing up, I knew of Diana Ross Mega Star lead vocalist of the Supremes. Who went on to achieve further stardom as a solo artist and an accomplished actress. Oh, another fact, Diana received her Grammy's Lifetime achievement Award in 2012 for her solo career. Now Diana and the girls will be recognized collectively.

      It might be that at that moment Cindy flubbed her *mime* . Diana's vocal seems live but with those wide camera shots they probably couldnt have brought the overhead mic close enough to capture Cindy and Mary's vocals cleanly enough without the mic being in the shot. I suspect Cindy and Mary's vocals were pre recorded, along with the backing. Still a great performance. Love it.

    The girls sing their standard arrangement, with the orchestration a bit less frenetic than on the record. It's a great song anyway, I loved it when it came out and love it just as much today. When you read about Motown and H-D-H, the power tussles, behind the scenes aggro and law suits are often pretty heavy---but the songs that came out of that hits factory are simply fabulous.

    Best part of the performance is at 1:55 when Mary and Cindy demonstrate the safe and Supreme way of what to do before crossing the street. And hopefully Miss Ross never caught Cindy briefly lip synching to the lead near the end as I'm sure Cindy would have been on the receiving end of a vicious cussing out from Miss Ross, if not a violent beatdown.

      That's the problem when u have to not only learn ur part, but the part of the lead singer, too. Diana Ross is no fool, she knew who to mess with & who not to mess with. Cindy was a healthy woman back then, & as skinny as Diana was back then, all Cindy had to do was push her down & sit on her, & that would have been it for Ross, but Cindy was too much a lady to "scrap", but u can push a person until the "REAL PERSON" come out & u will be sorry. Too bad Florence didn't stand up for herself, she might be here today. Who knows but the "Master"!

On Sullivan's show, she totally trainwrecks "Forever Came Today" & another song "I Hear A Symphony", & she twist "You Can't Hurry Love", "Reflections" but she recovers & go on like nothing ever happened. The Supremes next lead singer, Ms. Jean Terrell murdered "Stoned Love" on the Mike Douglas Show but recovered & carried on very graciously. The sign of a real seasoned performer.😁

    The bass player hits a bum note at 02:16 but otherwise this is as close as you are going to get to a flawless performance! Diana Ross definitely seems to be singing live, showing just what a world class vocalist she was. Cindy and Mary probably as well, I would say (though no mics in evidence). They could all have been singing over a track pre-recorded at the venue - seems most likely. No disrespect to the bass player - they probably only got a couple of hours' run-through on a show like this and it's a tricky number with all the counter-intuitive chord progressions (I love HDH chord progressions!).
