My dear Giselle... this has probably been your best Q&A ever. A tremendous amount of information, and most likely, no one was left wondering about anything. Great job❣️⚘️
Thank you for sharing this, Giselle. I am still in wonder that so many can be fed so efficiently! It certainly does seem to be wise to simply expect everyone to work all tasks and to put their heart and soul into it. God bless you all.
Many years ago I used to visit 10 different colonies west of Winnipeg to teach music. It was amazing how food was so different at each colony. The colony was always very generous sharing meals with the teachers. One of the colonies "special" meals was pork cutlets. I had the dandelion wine just once!!!!!!!!! Never again!
So interesting to hear answers to all of those questions! Thank you for taking the time to inform us. LOVE watching your cook & bake weeks ( and all other videos as well!)!! You are a joy & an inspiration!!
Thank you. I'm glad other people thought of so many interesting questions because I can never think of anything! 😅 I used to work in a hospital kitchen and I never thought a cook week would be easy. I'm always amazed at how calm you are!😂It's a high pressured environment because there's a lot of components to a meal that all have to be ready at the same time which can be hard enough even for just one family. Seeing your industrial sized mixers and dish-washing facilities brings back memories! Glad Kona is helping with the planting!🌿🐕

Wild yeast is airborne almost everywhere, with different strains in different areas, some taste great, others not so much, thus the sharing of the tastiest strains. Also, the naural white coating on the outside of some grapes and some other fruit like blueberries contains a lot of wild yeast, so an ancient way to start a sourdough was to wash some grapes in water, then mix that water with flour and wait. Usually the yeast takes hold, but sometimes mold does instead. Another is just to make a wet dough of flour and water and let it set, uncovered, kneading it frequently so it doesn't dry out too much, and hope that wild yeast lands and begins to leaven it. My lazy modern way is to mix a store bought yeast sachet (like you'd use for bread) into equal parts flour and water and wait a day or two. Not the tastiest sourdough, but it works, and it gets a new pot going. :) Sometimes the wild yeast in your area will gradually take over the commercial yeast strains, too, which can gradually make it better.
Thanks for posting this Giselle! I think your great attitude around your cook week makes it look easy. Very interesting questions and I pray you have a blessed week. Nicole, Virginia, USA.😊

I agree Giselle. cook days or week can be very tiring. not every thing goes right all the time and trying to get everything done and out is hard. Does your Mom have work she does every day or once a month? what do ladies do after they turn 46?
Some of the things Giselle has mentioned for her mom and other ladies are: Friday cleaning of their own house, laundry (Giselle and her mom split the cleaning and laundry duties for their household of 7 people), taking care of the children age 2 1/2 to 5 yrs at the daycare - each lady does one day a week. A husband and wife team supervise the children's dining room (ages 6 - 14 yrs). Some ladies (any age) do caregiving for their elderly family members. I believe they are also involved in seasonal activities such as canning and other food processing/ food preservation activities that involve most or all colony residents. I am sure there are many things for everyone to keep busy and help each other, so that everyone feels needed but is not overburdened. Hope I am not over-stepping by commenting, since it was Giselle that you asked.
Hope you can answer this for me. The men that work out in the fields either planting or harvesting or either preparing the soil for planting do they all come in at once together, or take turns coming to the kitchen? Maybe you carry it out to them??? Always wondered about this.
In our colony, during harvesting, we bring out food for them. During planting, however, they either come home for food or don’t come home at all, and when they don’t come home, someone usually brings them food home so they can eat it later. Hopefully that answers your question!

I didn't know you had one person who just cooks for people who are sick etc. Thats a great idea! what happens if a person turns 46 and they still want to cook. Can they? This is off the topic of kitchen....When you have lived in a colony, have you always lived in the colony you live in now?
