Primitive Basket Weaving

This is our first attempt at making a "survival" type basket out of raw materials, cattails and yucca plants found in the woods. This would probably be a good basket for collecting berries or nuts found at Camp Liberty. The basket did dry out and shrank significantly and became more brittle than originally thought. We will continue to explore more options in regards to materials and practice. Thanks for watching video.

As an Ojibwe and taught by an old woman, I will add this bit of advice.
Cattail basket. Round side down. Add a bit of any copper wire to strengthen the basket, if it's to be used to carry more than 8 lbs of weight.
I use green cattail baskets for gathering spring mushrooms and such. they don't last long but as an ornamental type of decoration, they are kind of cool.
I'd suggest strengthening this with things like blackberry ( bramble ) or a nice root.

fyi ...I am from the smoky mountains where we have different materials for basket making (pine nettles or vine)but I have seen the same technique or some variation used all over the world from Africa,Asia, Middle East, midwestern USA, central and South America and they all use different plant materials but the same method .....bunching the reeds together and sewing them into a circle /coil for a base ...then the reed comes out around the sides to build up the sides adding reeds as you go ...I fear the basket you made may be good net-type baskets for catching fish but when it dries out will break at the bottom.... from a survival point of view you want things that consume time and energy to last..great video ..thank you for sharing your journey

When you're weaving with strips, you're suppose to lift up the under woven strips and then lay the next piece down and then put the under woven pieces down and lift the other strips up.

Does phormium tenax grow in your region? Also known as new Zealand flax, even though it is no relative to the flax plant at all... It's leaves can be softened and woven into baskets purses mats etc... We Maori call the art of weaving Raranga... Not only can the leaves be woven, if scraped, the leaves produce a strong fibre that if treated in the correct manner can be made to feel and look like pure white silk...

if you're in a temperate climate then where did you get the yucca? Isn't it a desert plant?

We had planted some on our property. They grow well in our climate.

@@CampLiberty1989 This video would have been far more useful if you had at least mentioned a plant or two that natively grows around cat tails that could be used instead of yucca. You didn't mention how to harvest the cat tail leaves for the best health of the plant, either.

Maybe because this person never weaved a basket in his life and is still learning? He made some mistakes and got immediately corrected by the older dude, who I assume has more experience in the craft than the other guy does. Every student is kind of an idiot until they get good at what they are supposed to do, its just how it goes. :P
