    It must be so satisfying to do something to a cows hoof and have her step down gingerly, testing her foot out, and realizing it doesnt hurt as much as it did before. You made an immediate difference in that animals well being.

    Just watched the Hoof GP. It was a video of a cow with a bad infection. Soon as her leg bent, puss shot out of the side of I believe her tarsal joint. Then down at the hoof there was a bubble. The stuff was so dang thick, and it took so long to get most of it out. Watching things like you pull out rocks, and infection oozing out of these poor darlings though, just makes me feel so happy there are people watching out for them. Whenever I have a toothache or some other ache, I love watching these videos because then I envision being able to release the same from whatever is hurting on me. It's weird, but it helps. I also just really love watching the darlings get some pain relief.

    It's almost as rewarding watching you as it is having your job.
    Questions: Is there a grey area between what you can do for a cow that's badly off on their feet and what a vet does? Or is the line pretty clear? Are cows almost always better off seeing a pro hoof trimmer first to see if their issues can be solved with more gentle interventions?

    • @TT-_-
      @TT-_- 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      In my experience vets are way worse at hoof things (of course; they need to know everything from whiskers to the tip of the tail, from chickens to rabbits to cows). If you can get a trimmer quickly, get them (but vets are easier to get on short notice).
      A block applied by a trimmer will stay on for many weeks, by a vet it might stay for *a* week. If a trimmer can't find the problem, then it's time for the vets as the problem must be higher up than the hooves.
      My workplace had a cow who was trimmed by both vets and a trimmer multiple times, some hoof problems were treated but she just became worse instead of showing improvement. After a few weeks the vets determined she must have a broken pastern, and she was put down (as she had almost lost her milk due to pain only weeks after calving, and the break was old by the time it was realised).

      @NatetheHoofGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Usually vets send foot problems to us. We’ve got more experience with hooves, better equipment and sharper tools. They do work on them in emergency situations but they prefer us to do it. When it comes to surgical procedures like amputations or if antibiotics are needed then that’s where they come. Generally speaking.

    Seeing them take those first couple of steps out of the chute, they're expecting the same pain, and after just a couple of steps they have a happy gait

    How long does it usually take to finish up with trimming for a farm and how long until you return to the farm again?

    • @NatetheHoofGuy
      @NatetheHoofGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It varies depending on farm size. On small farms I’ll trim all of the cows on a visit and won’t be back for six months to trim again. On larger farms I don’t ever really finish. My largest farm has about 1700 animals so I go there every week and trim 50-70.

    umm , new to this channel.. but does this hurt the animal when you do this, or do you give pain/numbing medicein?

  • @barbaramatthews4735

    Cows are a big mystery to me. I see them near me a lot as I live in a rural area and my neighbors have them. They have gotten loose a few times and one time the herd came running across my front yard.
    I had to let the farmer know that his cows were loose. They are big and that is all I know.
    I am impressed by what you do. I respect people who are able to work with them. I'm also glad that you can help when they are injured. I've learned a lot watching your channel.

    Quick question, has a cow ever (or tried to) kick you while you were working on them? Also I love these videos they are so interesting and you do so well on explaining everything😁

    I’m amazed how they don’t flinch in pain or try to escape! When I have an injury or infection even touching it lightly is painful! These cows are so patient and brave (yes I know there is a mechanism holding them but even then they are calm)

    You have such a gentle hand when fixing hoofs unlike GP and others. They just dig, knock and slam the cows foot with zero regard for the pain they are in.
