This is another problem we have found to cause sound problems - Iphone Mic Problem Is It Hardware Or IOS 12 Software Or Both? • Iphone Mic Problem Is ...
This guide will help to fix the microphone problems on any iPhone, if the problem is hardware you can use this how to and confirm if the microphone is broken or if it is a software problem.
If it is a software problem, it is very likely to be the phone noise cancellation that has gone wrong.
The simple fix is to disable this feature and restart the phone and see if that fixes the problem. If it does fix it, you could try turning the noise cancellation back on and it will probably work fine again, but if not just leave it off.

Kyle Thompson Best Buy told me that you could purchase a new SIM card. That could be the reason. I didn’t go that route, I ended up buying a new phone 😭
Just a thought but get the phone quite cold and reboot and see if it works. That would almost confirm the solder on the chip is the problem. When it is colder the chip shrinks a little bit and will allow it to make contact it seems that when the phones get hot if there is any loose connections or partially loose connections with the expansion of the heat that is what causes the problem

From the research I have been doing it might be you phones mic ic chip that has either become unsoldered or corrupted. Google search for iPhone mic ic chip and you can see if the description of the problem matches what you are having happen to your device.

Dropped my phone and now when I make or receive calls I can’t hear them they can’t hear me either and when I can hear anything it’s like a broken record and makes a screeching noise
Sounds like hardware damage. A trip the genius bar might be a good idea. Or the local repair shops

For anyone reading this that still can’t get there microphone to work no matter what, look at your microphone it has dirt and lint in it which prevents any noise from being heard. I literally just got a pencil and poked the holes to get out the lint and now it works perectly fine

So if you record your voice and play it back doesn't it sound normal volume? Does Siri hear you normally or do you have to put the phone quite close to your mouth?

I toggled noise cancellation for the first time ever last week, just to see what the difference is with it on. Experienced immediate loss on of the bottom mic on the next phone call. (Person on other end said it sounded like I was in a tunnel) I switched noise cancellation off but the lower mic only works while recording videos (camera app, snapchat etc). Have you ever heard of such a thing? Almost like toggling it on permanently rerouted microphone input. Going to try n restore tomorrow. iPhone 8+ w iOS 13.4.1
sounds like one of the mics is blocked or not functioning i would think but difficult to tell without seeing or hearing it

if noise cancellation is not there that normally means there is a problem with the hardware. try a full factory reset and see if it still doesn't work, if so you probably need a trip to the apple store or a local phone repair shop

It can also be a problem with the SIM card not matching the phone. I tried using my "BYOP" SIM from my unlocked Moto G6 phone in an iPhone 6 Plus that my sister gave me and had that problem of people not being able to hear me.
I found out that even though they are all iPhone 6 Plus and supposedly unlocked ... they have different model numbers and need different Sim cards.
Some use "GSM" network and others use "CDMA" network.
Good advice. I had a similar issue with a Vectone SIM card which is a vmno

I did everything that was in the video. My phone noise cancellation was on, I turned it off, I restarted and this time it made the problem worse, my speaker button was greyed out and my phone noise cancellation had disappeared, now it’s impossible to fix this and I can’t just show it to my parents.
it is a failure of the sound chip, there is nothing you can do and it will eventually happen to most if not all iphone 5s through to the 8.
It isn't anything you have done wrong, just a bad solder design

Are you sure it has to be hardware issue? I have iPhone XR which I upgraded to iOS 14 last week, and then I stopped hearing the calls (until I switched to speaker or headphones). After I found your solution, then I disabled "Control noise cancellation on iPhone" setting, and sound during the calls returned. Now I am wondering if my phone is broken or this is just software issue. Just to let you know, caller was able to hear me perfectly fine. I also noticed when I was on the call on the speaker and switched off to normal, then I had a sound in the earphone for about 0,5 sec, and later it disappeared.
could be either but the noise cancellation basically disables one of the mics

I got the latest update which is iOS 13.1.3 am using an iPhone 8plus. Whenever I send voice note on WhatsApp ? am not hear anything also on instagram and snap but iMessage voice note works perfectly fine but the calls don’t , neither the calls on my other app but my normal calls work fine..

I am having this problem since updating to iOS 13.6 recently and unfortunately I have no noise cancellation toggle. Apparently some iPhone 7’s don’t have this setting.

Did you try the option to disable the noise cancellation? Sometimes you need to reboot the phone to get the setting to work. Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

This happened to my iPhone XS Max al out of the sudden, in phone calls my mic works fine, but not when it’s on speaker phone. I deduced that messenger, FaceTime, whatsapp etc calls make use of the speakerphone mode of the iPhone, and therefore also don’t work (meaning, the other party can’t hear me)
It’s weird that it’s happening when I can take videos, use Siri, and record voice just fine
have you got a local Apple store you can get them to run the hardware test on?

Issue - mic worked except in whatsapp video calls - turned out to be hardware. Related (apparently) to having replaced the battery recently. Solution is to use a set of headphones with its own mic. Thanks

Sounds like you have major issues! If you use a headset plugged in does that work correctly? It might be your headset jack is stuck or dirty? Try it and let us know.

That is the exact same thing happening to me when I use earphones the sound comes through my phone
My phone was fine then one day it like stopped. It would cut in and out of my aux cord and now it doesnt recongize my aux. I have plugged in headphones and it doesnt work. When I send a voice recording text message my phone takes forever to pick up my voice and chops up my message . Like it’s going in and out for seconds at a time . Does the same thing with phone calls.😩
Sounds like the chip is starting to fail try and keep the phone cool and don't dare drop it!
This solved my problem with no sounds in calls.

Thank you so much! It worked! Just wanted to add that I my iPhone I needed to make an extra step: after I got into accessibility, I had to go to audio/visual before I could see phone noise cancellation option.

Thank you so muchhhhh🙈😭I swear I’ve had a problem for months now.Like I couldn’t call anyone and also couldn’t hear myself when I recorded myself but it works when I put my earpods on but I’m still happy it works.
If the noise cancelling is the problem you may find the microphone by the camera is blocked. It will need cleaning out. You can use a tooth brush. If it’s blocked it cancels out all the sound.
I can only hear phone calls on speaker and idk how to fix it someone help

i have a problem and i haven’t found answers hopefully you can help me. my iphone doesn’t record any audio at all if i try to record voice memos it just lags/freezes and sometimes the button isn’t even letting me record and i can’t hear anything from calls please help!!!
Try recording with the apple headphones connected. Let me know what happens okay?
i tried putting in some headphones and they wouldn’t work but worked on my sisters iphone. I have a 7 and she has a 5 mine has the headphones with the charging port (no extension) and my music and audio would just play out like if they weren’t connected
Sounds like the charging port / headset jack is either damaged or dirty. That might be why the audio isn't being routed correctly. Try carefully cleaning the port with a toothpick or some other non conductive material. I'll do some more research and see if there is another option. But clean it up and let me know if that helps at all. If we follow a logical plan of fault finding we should be able to find the problem. I hope!

Noise cancellation was not a setting on my device. When on the phone with somebody, they can’t hear me and I can’t hear them anymore. Siri can’t hear me either.
IF a factory reset won't restore the noise cancelling, then it is likely your IC chip is damaged or not making contact. Take it to a local repair shop or Apple store and see if there is any warrant left on it.
