      That kind of energy stirs the spirits, really gets you going, L/Sgt Tagg (Taggy) back in the day was the champion at doing triplets on the march, saw him beat to death a few bass drum skins in my time with the corps. Good days.

    Dear Sirs,
    whenever I see a parade of your Grenadier Guards on TV, including of course now on the occasion of the funeral services for the late Queen Elizabeth II, on whose passing I would like to express my sincere condolences, I am very taken with the very high quality and robust looking shoes you wear with your uniform.
    I am from Germany and would like to know how and from where these shoes can be obtained, or are they custom made?
    I would really appreciate any tips and advice, as I would very much like to experience for myself what it is like to stand and walk in such shoes.
    Thank you very much.
    Frank

      he is bringing in the escort what that means is two lance corporals who escort the colour, when the command out the escort is given they assume the port arms position and run to each side of the colour, when the command in the escort is given they return back to their normal position.

      Thanks for the compliment from an expert! I also learned that to keep in step with a preceding sub-unit you gave the command in time with their "Left-right" step. My fading memory is based on six months Public Duties when the KSLI took over in 1948-49.

      Maybe you have the answer. Many units "Advance in Review Order" to "The British Grenadiers" I suspect that it may be because the first lyrics coincide with 15 paces. Any ideas? Thanks.

      The Rifles!

    • @GrenadierGuardsDmr
      @GrenadierGuardsDmr  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The music "The British Grenadiers" was written well before the 1st Regiment of Foot was granted the title "First or Grenadier Regiment of Foot" in 1815 by the Prince Regent weeks after their victory over the French Grenadiers at Waterloo. In the music, "Grenadier" refers to the Grenadier Companies attached to many infantry regiments. The Grenadier Guards have since adopted it as a Quick March. Subsequently the music is used during the Queen's Birthday Parade no matter which Regiment is trooping their Colour.

    • @lespeate1906
      @lespeate1906 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The other "flank" company was, of course, the Light Infantry, (my heritage!). It does lend itself well to advancing in review order - even the RCHA use it!

    DRUM MAJORS: Drum Major appointment in the Regiments of Foot Guards is always from Warrant Officer Class 2 rank (WO2) and they are always former Drummers from their Regiment's 1st Battalion Corps of Drums. Administratively they head the Corps of Drums although the preference is for them to lead the Regimental Bands at ceremonial. The occasional unavailability of Drum Majors requires Sergeants or Lance Sergeants of the Corps of Drums to act up as Drum Sergeants however these ranks do not carry swords or have tunics embellished with gold lace. A Gold (Full) Sergeant as Drum Sergeant leads the Corps of Drums in this video. Drum Majors wear a Shoulder Belt (not a "sash") embellished with regimental devices and battle honours, a sword, a dark red sash representing their Warrant Officer rank, and carry a Staff (not a "mace"). Four inverted gold chevrons are worn on the right arm, inverted signifying they are a badge of appointment rather than rank. The sword, chevrons and red sash are not worn with State Dress as in this video. Instead a peony red apron is worn, clasped at the front with a Regimental broach. You will see that DMaj Bainbridge, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, has the grenade fired proper of the Grenadier Guards on both his shoulder belt and apron broach in the video.
    Occasionally Drum Majors are permanently appointed to ceremonial duties and they then leave their respective 1st Battalions (Corps of Drums - part of deployable battle forces) and are appointed Drum Majors of the Household Division. Such is currently the case with DMaj Fitzgerald, Senior Drum Major Household Division, Coldstream Guards, DMaj Taylor, Drum Major Household Division, Coldstream Guards and DMaj Staite, Drum Major Household Division, Grenadier Guards. The Senior Drum Major may be promoted to WO1 rank although this is not often as it requires both appropriate length of service and exemplary conduct. Drum Majors of the Household Division wear shoulder belts displaying the Regimental Badges of all seven regiments of the Household Division, including those of The Life Guards and The Blues and Royals. Drum Majors who remain with their respective 1st Battalions wear shoulder belts displaying the single Regimental Device (eg: the grenade fired proper for the Grenadier Guards, the leak for the Welsh Guards) of their own Regiment.

      +GrenadierGuardsDmr i have a question if i may...i read somewhere that the SDMHD Ray Davis was not popular with the Directors of music , he did only one trooping in 1988 and was replaced right away by Stephen Ward....i know this can sometimes happen but its unusual.....he had a long career with the Grenadiers and then went on to HM prisons, do you know anything on this matter as it just made me curious when i read that, what it was all about. he looked perfectly smart to me and had the typical guards nuance of the high pitched executive word of command that is not used much by drum majors nowadays.................regards ..marty

      +louislungbubble I have no idea whether this is correct, however I had heard that the timing between his cautionary command (eg: "Quick") and his execute command (eg: "March"), plus some of his inflections, annoyed some of the Directors of Music, not just at The Troop. The Drum Major's timing between the cautionary command and the executive command is supposed to perfectly match the beat of the music about to be played to set the tempo and march pace for the Timebeater (bass drummer) and side drummers who play the five pace roll on the drums before step off and therefore set the tempo for the musicians. If this were an accurate criticism of Mr Davis, and I stress I do not know that it is, then he would certainly not be the only example. Mr Davis is still around, perhaps he would like to set the record straight.

      Interesting. As a poor squaddie from a Line regiment (without the benefit of Pirbright!) I was taught that the timing between "Quick" and "March" was the same cadence as the marching pace. I was L.I. so it was even shorter!

    HD musicians must be getting a bit fed up with playing the same old marches all the time (i am not talking regimental marches obviously!) there is such a wealth of wonderful march tunes published over the last hundred plus years but all i seem to hear when i search this kind of materiel are 15 to 20 or so of the same tunes all the time......when was the last time the march "the guards brigade" was played, or "the third battalion" or Bashfords marches "the white plume" or" Queens company" ,Dick Ridings march "rorkes drift"...i could go on and on...its seems a pity that so much great music falls by the wayside......whatever comes up here on you tube is ,with some refreshing exceptions , very repetitive .......marty

      +louislungbubble There is so much to choose from. The Basler March, The Red Shield (Salvation Army), are favorites of mine. Royal Birthday is an excellent march, as is Step Lightly, but I never hear them anymore.

      @louislungbubble 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +k0smon yes sir...step lightly is a great tune ,royal birthday i know well though not one of my own favorites.....marches like bravura and Arnhem, Wellington and steadfast and true are wonderful things to hear....but not all the time!! i will always agree Alford marches should be played often but when you think of the great tunes that are available but never played ( it seems)....its a shame....a couple of troopings ago the massed bands played the red feathers march by McKenzie-Rogan ,if you know it? that was something to hear...i am guessing here but i think that at least is not played often because its too hard?? ..............marty

      +louislungbubble One of my favorites is Bond of Friendship, by M.R. The story behind it is very touching. About 1975 military bands in the US made about 25 albums called "Heritage of the March" some of which can be found on YT. It you want difficult stuff, listen to pieces composed by Paul Lovatt Cooper who writes for brass band.

    Why do the members of the Corps of Drums carry a bugle (or cornet)?

    • @Peter-lm3ic
      @Peter-lm3ic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      An infantry Corps of Drums, drummer with his drum in the past was used for troop movements in the field and is still sometime used for drill movements such as getting on parade. A bugle was used for alerting troops mainly whilst off duty of such duties as reveille, alarms, cookhouse, guard, lights out and parade duties etc. Therefore all members of the Corps of Drums carry a bugle to spread the load of 24/7 range of duties.
