    Our oven has been lined with alum foil (the very bottom) for 25 years and I didn’t have any problems with bottom finish being ruined.
    But I do agree that using alum foil on the rack messes cooking times and causing food less crispy. Just from my experience.

      So your oven is over 25 years old? Well, old appliances lasted longer that modern ones, so materials in your oven not same as in modern ovens! And it's not only appliances, it's furniture, cookware, vehicles! Growing up, my parents had a full home, 10 children & the family literally lived in the living room & it was always huge family meals prepared 3 times a day as we never ate at restuarants or order food, yet my parents never replaced their pots, the one frying pan we owned, refrigerator, stove, sofas, coffee table.& they were all good condition when I left my home country at 20 years old!
      I once ready somewhere that manufacturers don't want to spend a lot producing long-lasting cos 1)not profitable for them as they can now mass produce, but if they don't have repeat customers, how will they make their money?2)majority of consumers don't want to invest in "buy it for life" items, most people are too busy with outside life to invest time in maintaining their appliances in "good as new condition" when they can afford to replace the item after 10 years, plus many people can't resist the new features on modern appliances, so many don't want the same oven or refridgerator from 30 years ago even if it still fuctions excellent!

      His reasoning makes no sense either. It reflects heat so it will ruin the finish. 1- it reflects heat from above so it will be cooler 2- it's made to get up to whatever temp the oven is, reflecting heat won't make it any hotter.

    I get not putting foil in the bottom of the oven, and my oven salesman, installer, repair tech and manual all say the same thing. But there are some things that are meant to cook directly on a rack. so then if I'm not putting foil under it, I'm going to use a foil-lined sheet pan. But...if a sheet pan is OK, then why is foil not OK? And in this instance where I'm using it to prevent leaks/drips/smoke/fire and if I shouldn't use the pan in this case and just clean the oven more often...then why is it OK to use a pan at all? I realize that this comment may seem like I'm asking it in a chest-poking way, but I'm genuinely curious.

    I made the mistake of putting foil onto the bottom plate when we bought our first new oven. It basically melted onto it and I couldn't even scrap it off. We have a permanently "foiled" look to the inside bottom now. Whoopsy. It still bakes just fine though. I also use it on the rack to catch spills. It's either that or a cookie sheet.

      Be very careful - if it takes the porcelain enamel away and leaves chips then those chips are in your oven floating around. If you have a convection fan especially. The foil melted to the bottom of my 7 year Bosch and left chips out of the enamel. After cleaning as best as I could, I vacuumed out as well since there were so many chips. To test it out - I put it on warm up on convection and wiped it down again with a wet paper towel - shiny enamel chips coated the wet paper towel. Mostly on the top of the oven between the elements. I realized I could never safely use my oven again. The Bosch technician said REPLACE. Do not use. I told him that I only used aluminum foil - Heavy Duty, btw - and I did not see that UNDER the foil all this damage was happening. The foil looked fine. He confirmed that is what can happen. Personally, I think the manufacturer is not addressing this and clearly people think it's safe to do. It's not. If the oven can get this much damage then I should have been warned CLEARLY that it is A HEALTH HAZARD as well as an oven loss. I am sure we have eaten some of the enamel chips. When I checked the manual - it is not clearly warning me that it's a HEALTH HAZARD. I never buy aluminum foil so I did not remember reading about it 7 years ago. There should be warnings on the door - the drawer or embossed in the porcelain like some brands. Be very careful! If you did not chips broken off under the porcelain then you are probably okay. Sorry that happened to you. I was talking to an appliance salesman about this and he said this is why he tells every customer he sells an oven to---- DO NOT USE ALUMINUM FOIL.

  • @NathanSweet

    I have an electric oven, I've been using aluminum foil on the bottom, underneath the coil for at least 10 years. Nothing has happened. Just don't use it in gas oven, except if you cut it small enough not to cover the sides where the heat comes out.

  • @Muonium1
    @Muonium1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    I've literally used aluminum in the oven for decades. It's perfectly 100% fine if you're not an idiot.
    I wouldn't put it on the very bottom level because obviously that's where the heating element is and it could melt the aluminum, duh. But if I'm making something that's probably going to spill over or drip you bet your azz I'm putting a layer of foil on the lower rack to save from having to clean up later. Everything cooks just as evenly as before. These companies love to play up the "our technology's so sophisticated now!! This ain't your grandma's oven!!" angle because they always need to create the illusion of their new products being superior, and it's like 99% BS. Yes, your oven most likely is pretty much like your grandma's oven: it's an insulated metal box that gets hot by either running electricity through an element or burning gas. THAT'S IT. You can add all the newfangled computerized controls to the front you want, it's still just a box that gets hot. Understand how your oven actually functions and use it as you see fit.

      No, that's not why we say don't do things like this. I'm a Service Technician. We say it for liability. If you cover the vents, it won't vent properly. If you tell customers it's ok, all it takes is one time.
      I like to give customers both angles and it has bit me in the past.
      I've told customers, obviously in the beginning of my career, about the situation POTENTIALLY being ok etc. Only to get completely thrown under the bus. Now, I'm exactly like this guy in the video. These days, if I see a potentially unsafe situation, I lean on the side of caution.

    • @trisbane4086
      @trisbane4086 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately I've had first-hand experience with aluminum foil damaging my oven. We put foil on the tray - I believe almost completely covered - and the aluminum melted and seeped onto the bottom of the oven. The drips destroyed the porcelain like the guy in the video said. My mom and grandmother have used foil in their ovens all their lives, but the first time we tried it in our new house it ruined one of the built-in ovens. We did call a technician who came in and said the damage was merely cosmetic and the oven is still usable. But yeah... Use at your own risk.

      @@benackdrums yeah continue to talk $hit on your way to the bread line where your man biden has us headed. 🙄 Don't complain when your paychecks are smaller because Biden won't raise taxes on anyone making less than 400k a year.. oh wait reversing Trump tax cuts is doing exactly that. Or you don't have a job at all anymore because Biden raised corporate taxes and export tariffs so much that it's no longer feasible for your company to do business here so they ship your job over the boarder. He's spent over 4 trillion dollars in less than 4 months.. that's a bill of $10,500 for every living person in the United States. (Not that Trump was afraid to spend either but not to this extent) Considering the "covid relief" bill that Dems drafted and pushed through that less than 9% actually went to covid related issues.. but you know transgender studies are pretty important to fund in countries that throw people like that off of buildings. Or when your defunded police department doesn't respond to your 911 call as your antifa buddies are bashing In the windows of your home with molotov cocktails. You have no way to defend yourself because you think gun ownership is bad. I could go on but I'm sure you get the point.. then again libs can be pretty dense. You people have no logic.. zero!

    We just moved into a rental and I put a sheet of aluminium foil down and left it for a few times of baking, maybe 7 times. The foil has melted onto the bottom of the oven and I’m pretty sure destroyed it. I cannot get it off. It’s like cement. So depressing.

      Terrible. Just ruined my BOsch oven and can't use it. Enamel dust particles keep coming up. Not safe to use. Scared to replace it as how can you expect renters to understand and remember. It's a terrible disservice that all ovens don't have clear warnings and also the foil boxes. SOrry that happened to you.

      This is easy. Basically microwave a sheet of tinfoil for 2 and a half minutes. While you are doing this, pour boiling water over the tinfoil stuck to the bottom of your oven. Once the tinfoil is microwaved, immediately place it in the boiling water. Take the nearest wooden chair in your kitchen. Please make sure that this is a chair that you can dispose of. You will need to break the chair apart, and place the wooden feet rests to one side. Take the main part of the chair and place this in your back yard. You will need to place this in a container filled with a 15 litres of standard engine oil, and 5 litres of gasoline. Please note that this must be left to sit for 1 hour. While this is sitting, take the feet rests from the chair and place them on top of the tinfoil and boiling water in your oven, set your oven to 200 and heat for 25 minutes. After the main part of the chair has soaked for 1 hour, take the chair out of the engine oil and gasoline mix, take the heated up wood chair feet rests and microwaved sheet of tinfoil and burn them in a fire pit for 35 minutes. Once this is done you should take the ash from the fire pit, rub the markings on your face and push the rest of the ashes up your arse. Repeat the Mantra 'Shaka-booba-looba-pavlova' five times and the tinfoil at the bottom of your oven will disappear resulting in a shiny new surface that one would expect when you first purchased the oven.

    Thanks for sharing. Where I am about to leave the owner says a gas leaking stove is fine. Go figure his dumbass logic. Then another idiot leaves the tinfoil on the bottom near the heating coil so the next person to use it catches fire!

    Wasted video if you can't explain the best way to remove it when foil does get stuck on the bottom. Happened when seasoning a cast iron skillet, how the heck does one safely remove what baked on the bottom. No, soapy water in a warm oven & plastic scraper won't do it.

  • @gdb0360

    This only really applies in electric grills/ovens as the foil can curl and cause electrical shorts. It is also the case that foil can be incendiary. Aluminium is also HIGHLY neurotoxic. In fact, if memory serves, it's the 2nd most toxic metal on earth, next to Mercury and is claimed to be a major contributor to altzheimers etc. This is one reason why aluminium pans & utensils etc are falling out of favour amongst those of us who care about our health. I wouldn't have aluminium pans or foils in the house. It's time people learned.
    There are cheap oven liners available or place a baking sheet in the bottom rung.
