I regularly do 100-125km with my Fang UV21R. My 20 watt mobile doesn't seem to do much better. I'm near VE7RVA, and hit some south island repeaters no problem, such as VE7AQW which is 123 km away.
I have that antenna, but I wanted a single magnet mag mount. Purchased what they recommended and the antenna won’t screw all the way down into the mag mount!
Hey Jerry, thanks for your comment mate. I'll pass this onto Radioddity. Did you buy this? www.radioddity.com/products/radioddity-ram5 It looks like it should screw in? Has it just run out of thread? Let me know thanks Jerry. Cheers buddy
Why use a magmount when you have a roof rack. I used to have a thick steel plate on my roof rack and used braid to earth all points of contact to the car. I could have a full size firestick and also had a very thick alloy pole that could pin into the upright position to add a mast. We used to plonk the Avanti Sigma IV on the roof of the car for parkups.
Hey mate, that's a fantastic question. The main reason why I use the magmount is because I can quickly throw a hamstick on top of it, and boom, I'm resonant on hf. The roof rack is not bonded to the roof as the frame bases are plastic, and I don't want a bunch of wires going everywhere. Great point you make though. Happy building mate! Cheers
G'day Andrew, thanks for watching and leaving a comment mate. I ran the coax through the back window - it's one of those type windows on a van that only opens a couple of inches, I guess for the passengers right in the back to get some air.... then I just ran the coax up the middle of the car under the carpets and up to the radio. Hope this helps mate. Cheers!
I owe you an apology Simon. Yesterday, when I heard your POTA activation, there was another frequency in use near yours. When I heard your CQ, the other in use frequency bled through. I blasted your radio right in the middle of your livestream. I didn't hear you say QRL because the band was in and out so I blathered on/. My apologies....73...Hugh...KN6KNB.
G'day Hugh, so awesome to hear from you mate. Hey buddy, no worries at all - the bands were crazy bad wow, and that QRM was just hideous hahaha. You're the best! Thanks for all of your support my friend. See ya on the bands mate. Cheers!
Let's chat via AllStar Don- having said that mate, I've checked into the Rainbow net for the past 2 mornings just before 9am! Wooohooo - I can get into the net regularly with this set up buddy. Let's chat on Seymour repeater some time soon.
@@thehamjazz Mr Mike updated SSD for me. I need to get IAX loaded on my PC so I can talk on Allstart. I do have Echolink running from my Allstar node so that other Hams can check into the Rainbow Net.
@@thehamjazz Health update: I've got Siactic issues right now. It very painful to walk around the apartment let along attempt to play radio outdoors. I tried connecting to your node and I gave a holler on your Allstar node.

I was using 50 watts FM to talk to an aeronautical mobile station 100 km away.
Nice

I guess the only way for my indoor antenna is to go connect via Allstar.

A magnet is ultimate? Drill a hole and hide your wires properly.
Ha! You're so right mate. Thanks for watching
