Hey i have a 1997 Magna VF750C and it looks to be the exact same. Getting ready to drain the oil And replace the sparkplugs due to a no start issue. Not sure what oil i need to put back in tho...so headed to google.

I have a 1982 magna 750, I'm hoping that the '84 is close enough for me to give this a go after watching this clip. Thanks for posting.

To clarify, the side cover did not need to come off to do this job did it?

No it did not need to come off. I took it off to find out what was going on with the starter clutch.
BUT DRAIN THE OIL. If you dont you will get a gush of oil out the hole where the starter goes into the transmission.

Think a 83 shadow 750 would be about the same job/process?

I believe the starter on the shadow is on top of the transmission behind the heads, rather than the bottom of the engine. I think it would be easier to change if that is the only problem. You wont even need to get down on the floor to reach. In thes photos you can see the starter in the upper right corner of the transmission case. www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiq5fuQwurdAhWi4IMKHXA_At8QjRx6BAgBEAU&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.blinkenbyte.org%2Fmotorcycles%2Fvt700c%2Fpictures.html&psig=AOvVaw3QExmVh7ZV_k54KZ1fqdTg&ust=1538664515121757
