Great video Marlon! Love your take on not watching too many videos 😀 Getting the work down is what makes things happen. I’ll add balance as an important factor. Sometimes I push too hard because I feel inspired but it almost always leads a few tough days where I just sit and browse the web... Finding a pace and intensity that works in the long run is key for my consistency. Thanks for a great video! Keep it up and see you in 2023! Carl

Yes! "Balance" is so very important. Especially so as I get older and my priorities and perspective changes (family/health). Great point, Carl! Thanks.

5:45 I have a very similar system, but three separate, pinned notes in my Notes app on my iPhone; To-Do Today, To-Do This Week (split by day), To-Do Long Term. I organise everything from meetings, chores, social media posts, tracks due, everything

Keep going, you gonna do that ! I also produce beats / samples / compositions . For past 6 months I felt heavily unmotivated but still kept moving. I like how you can actually get to setting up goals and keep with them. I always get hyped for something but after 3-4 days I simply can't keep up and give up. However you kinda motivated me with your positive message !

Thanks, Andrew. I feel strongly about being honest about those challenges. Social Media, in general, has us sharing only the good stuff so I think it's helpful to be real about the struggles, too. I appreciate you taking the time.

Hey Marlon! Always enjoy watching your videos. Work in the commercial video world has kept me super busy the last year, so I haven't been producing production music like I had planned. But this year I've decided to go a different direction... I'm taking a step back, and just focusing on music as a creative outlet... focusing on my guitar playing, piano playing, and music composition. It's so easy to get sidetracked with gear, or being productive, or new sample libraries. But this year I'm taking a step back and just focusing on music itself... I saw one of your videos recently where you discussed the idea of slowing down... I think that's so important. Hustle culture has its place, but sometimes you just need to slow down in life to figure out where you want to go... For me that means rediscovering why I love music in the first place... And then just go from there. Anyway, always love seeing my notification that you have a new video. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and advice!

I love this and 100% support the idea! Explore, break the rules, be unapologetically creative, on your own terms. Enjoy every note. Best to you, Kevin!

Regarding consistency I'd add something to your point; it's *incredibly* hard to jump back into momentum once you've gone a few weeks or even months without writing/producing. The longer you put it off, the harder it gets to bounce back, so the crucial key is to keep going on a daily basis, or at least most working days of the week. Cheers brother!

This is absolutely true! Again, just like going to the gym, take a day off... not so bad, take a month off... pay the price.. lol.

Great video, Marlon! Just had a few placements in Spain and the first placements are a relief as well as joyous. I however, do have my feet on the ground to try and follow the goals as you have stated.
I have a question regarding the sync industry. I have read that the instrumentals are more plentiful but do not pay as much. The vocal songs are better paying but more rare in comparison to instrumentals (not doing it for the pay though...lol). For the vocals, is it always a case that there has to be emphasis on the artist. I am just a composer (like instrumentalists) who happens to do vocals. Any advice in this area is most welcome. Thanks for your videos here and your generosities!

Hey RJ Blaze, thanks for the comment. In my humble opinion, what’s more important than Vocals vs Instrumental, is the quality of your track (for either), combined with the success rate of the publisher, and the clients that trust and use that Publisher. Also the details of the agreement and the nature of your track (generic or unique) and who uses it on what show or network and on and on. There are so many variables that dictate # of placements and the amount they earn.
I’ve made a living on just instrumental music in the Production World, even though I can sing. It’s just a preference for me. That said I think having vocals as an option is a great advantage. Often Libraries will send out a brief asking for songs with vocals.
Do what you feel most passionate about, not what feels forced. Thanks for taking the time.

@@MarlonGibbons Thanks so much for your time, Marlon. It's taken me a long time to get the music up to truly broadcast quality. I am just tickled pink with today's technology to allow the expression that we can create. I love everything that I have and even if I don't make a penny, it's the sheer joy of combining the technology with harmony vocals that I so love. Still struggling but still stoked! Keep up the great work with the videos and thank you for the advice!
