nice demo I just wish the horse had fit in a larger gullet so we could have seen how to identify a gullet that is too narrow and not just one that is too wide.
The gullet bar sets the width of the tree, so it needs to follow the line of the horse's body at a location about 5cm behind the point of scapula (top of shoulder blade). This is where the front of the saddle will sit, so it is important that the width of the saddle is correct for this part of the horse's body. If you are asking whether the gullet bar measurement should be taken further forward, over the shoulder blade, this would not give a useful reading because the saddle does not sit on the shoulder blade - it should remain clear of the shoulder blade to allow it to move without hindrance.
@@thorowgoodsaddles What about if the measurement behind the scapulae is wider than the shoulders? If the saddle is fitted to only where it sits then won't that damage the cartilage at the top of each scapula when the horse is in motion?
@@amberboston3154 A number of peer-reviewed papers investigating saddle pressure under the whole of the saddle area on horses in motion (trot, gallop and jump) have been published in scientific journals. The area over the scapulae was not a location where peak pressures were identified in any of these studies.
The idea is so you use the first and last strap so you have a strap in centre incase of the others snaps when riding you have one in equal distance to the two to attach it to. The equal distance of the girth straps helps to anchor a saddle at the front and back equally for stabilty and ensures it doesn't rock. But you can use the back two straps to allow more room for the shoulders and stop a saddle shifting backwards or vice versa use the front two to stop a saddle shifting forward over the shoulders. Many come with extra point straps, where you could dettach the very last girth strap and put right at the back of the saddle for extra stablity.
