    Nice work in developing the bait by having the ice shard at the beginning. No one will avoid that temptation

    I hope that someone from Wizards see your contents and hire you immediately. I love your dungeons, specially the details that you drawn on left and right side. We need this style on future d&d books

    For drawing dungeons, Dungeonfog is amazing. Can even draw it on the website, export it to your computer and print it out if you want.

    From one DM to another, thats a pretty slick map. 10/10.

    This was a FANTASTIC guide (especially the bit about showing your thought process out loud), and should be required viewing for anyone who intends to DM/GM. I do believe in one further addition to the process: contingency plans. As the saying goes, few plans survive first contact with the PCs, and to have a campaign end prematurely because the PCs straight up blindside the DM is always disappointing for all parties involved. In the scenario presented, what if, say, someone overhearing the planned conversation somehow figures out it is a setup, or the party finds a way to subvert the dungeon, say via particular spell or magic item abuse, or they find a way to make it to Balthazar's grove ahead of schedule, or even faster than him, etc. I don't mean EVERYTHING has to be planned for, or for things to be totally open-ended (nothing wrong with that in and of itself, mind you), just to have SOME form of backup in case things don't go as planned, or the players genuinely out-wit the DM at some point.

    The three clues rule, and drivers to make the players go where you want them to without railroading, those are the best tricks you can give to new GMs. But thanks a lot for this video!

    I have two things to say
    1) you're an amazing artist and content creator. Keep it up!
    2) what if my players decide to hunt down balthazar and fallow him instead? Like they dont trust the shifty af dudes and instead decide to find balthazar and fallow him to the magic spell book.

    • @esperthebard
      @esperthebard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      1) Thank you so much!
      2) That could possibly happen. As a DM, I try to enjoy the living flow of things. Go with it. Balthazar could still try to lure the characters to Mad Rabbit's Roost or even have an encounter with them there. Or he could bolster and establish his lair there, making it more powerful/defensible over time. The options are almost limitless.

    I'm new on this chanel.... I really understand your love for DnD. I think you are an amazing artist.
    I think you would be awesome making other games maps.... like RISK, Monopoly, or videogames maps. With your skills you can even make new board games with unique rules and stories.

    Another great video!
    About plot - I made two videos about adventure building which can really complement what you said on the subject. My method is to use factions to build the seed of the backstory and the chain of events that led to the current situation, which is very similar to the thought process you had about it. A book I highly recommend for plot building is Eureka by Engine Publishing, which is a wonderful source of inspiration.

    Great story and dungeon, but I have a simple question....
    what people do with maps like that?
    Is it just a reference for GM/DM, and then they draw parts of the map as players go on a different piece of paper?

    • @esperthebard
      @esperthebard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I talk about this in the video. This is the DM map. Typically, he draws the basic lines full-scale on a battlemat or uses theatre of the mind.

    If you think critically about the plot behind this example dungeon, given how eager he seems to be to harm his rivals, or perhaps pretend to do so, methinks that players would get the initial impression that Balthazar was evil, or was on the path to evil, and would thus consider him a very hostile enemy NPC. After all, trying to put players into dangerous situations seems like an evil act, perhaps even more so than misleading them for personal gain. I mean, what if the players do end up killing any of Balthazar's minions in their desperate plea to escape from his dungeon?
    Of course, all of these questions could be considered fuel for future adventures that might include Balthazar's encore appearance.

    What a coincidence, my players are going to face this exactly dungeon and monsters!
    Jokes aside, this helps me in my campaign, which I'm gonna ask, how you deal with art block? Sometimes I have great ideas but sometimes it just wont come and I have to force some random mediocre idea.
