I sensed the GOP was heading in this direction when I was 12 - 13 years old back in 1968! I only had to listen to Nixon and Agnew and I started to get nervous, long before both of them had to resign. I thought maybe Americans would wise up, then came Reagan, Lee Atwater and the religious right-wing. The rest is history and here we are.
Lee Atwater dreamed up the Southern Strategy that Nixon adopted. That turned the Republican party from a decent group of conservatives to a party based on hate. I'm hoping we're nearing the end of that movement. Many good people are fleeing the Republican party. Perhaps in a couple of election cycles we can again have a liberal party and a conservative party, both with decent values.

From a European perspective (I don't have enough knowledge of the rest of the world), and given everything I've learned about its countries, I'd put Finland and Iceland above the USA any day. Elderly disabled native Central Floridian here. This is the first time DeSantos antagonizing Disney and other corporations for refusing to agree to promote his fascist policies, makes even bad sense. Many employers have already left the state, leaving a big gap in ordinary things enjoyed by the rest of the country. Take homeowners' insurance. Most of the major insurance companies left because of DeSantos's inability to work with them. Many smaller insurance companies are failing to fill the gap because they're too small to pay out their claims despite making their premiums so high that many homeowners can't afford them. Also military and other government entities won't choose Florida when they can go to a state that doesn't require its Universities to tow the line and say that slavery was beneficial, ban on a whim books from school and public libraries and ban abortion at 6 weeks. It's just not attractive. And other states are very happy to have them. Florida was Democratic for the first half of my life. Bill Nelson as Insurance commissioner protected the people from insurance scams, and when he later became our Senator he worked with Governors like Bob Graham and Lawton Chiles to keep Florida growing and booming. MAGA voted out Bill Nelson and put Rick Scott, the man who perpetuated the biggest Medicare fraud in the history of the program, in his Seat. As a college professor, I say that the anti-University crowd just has to 'sit and wait' for the collapse of Higher Ed in America. Enrollments are falling due to demographics and a realization that as we rebuild manufacturing in America we need more blue collar & new collar workers - and white collar jobs that college grads get can be easily replaced with AI. Now that we are re-shoring manufacturing - and facing a housing construction crisis - Ed is not keeping up with the new economy. Our Ed system has discouraged going into the trades for generations while we off-shored manufacturing. As Unions crumbled, Higher Ed claimed to be the new pathway to Middle Class - since then our middle class has shrunk AND the cost of College has ballooned. I see a tectonic shift in community colleges offering more and more vocational training classes (including courses such as ESL) but fewer and fewer transferable courses. Universities are increasingly selective regarding transferable credits they accept from CC's because they need to maintain their own enrollments and tuition income. OTOH: pharma tech, EMT & dental hygienists need training that does not require a 4 year degree. As a democrat, I worry that if we cede the growing population of blue collar and new collar workers to the GOP we will become increasingly irrelevant.
I matriculated at U C, Berkeley, known as Bezerkly on Laugh Ln. As a California resident, we paid approximately $65. per semester in tuition. The greatest expence was buying the books the professors had authored and then made them assigned reading for their classes! It was during this time that,"Publish or Perish" was in vogue, and that was how the professors made their money. Tuitions have skyrocked since that time, along with everything else. I was,a Republican back then. I left the party under the Governorship of Reagan, and have not regretted it. The humanity as been reduced for average people and Corporations now control the vote in some places. Bigotry and party over country has in others. It is long past time to rid ourselves of tge Electoral College, though l think corporate control is too strong to accomplish this now. However, l believe it must be done to have free and fair elections by the voters.
I am a board certified Music Therapist, and my discipline requires a BA, MA, or PhD in the discipline of Music Therapy. Around 70 universities offer this program. It is a profession heavily embedded in the Psychology field, Music field, and specific areas of Neurology----"how the brain and body responds to music" not just listening to music, but being engaged in all forms of music. We must complete a 1100 hr internship once the academia is finished, and then sit for hours long, National Board Exams to have the credentials to practice as a Music Therapist. We must have Universities that have the teachers, and the program for us, so we can attain the degrees needed to serve individuals and groups of individuals in our communities, using elements of music to reach non-musical goals. I fear for many areas of need without support of our colleges and universities to attain the schooling needed for these allied health professions, and the specialties associated with them. Our work is important for the benefit of those we serve so they may live their best lives.

Jesus Christ saved my life recently, for many years I was lost, confused, depressed, and I was in need of a savior, he cures, heals and sets people free, he is calling to have a relationship with you, Jesus Christ wants to walk with you like a father walks with their son or daughter. Elderly disabled native Central Floridian here. This is the first time DeSantos antagonizing Disney and other corporations for refusing to agree to promote his fascist policies, makes even bad sense. Many employers have already left the state, leaving a big gap in ordinary things enjoyed by the rest of the country.
Take homeowners' insurance. Most of the major insurance companies left because of DeSantos's inability to work with them. Many smaller insurance companies are failing to fill the gap because they're too small to pay out their claims despite making their premiums so high that many homeowners can't afford them.
Also military and other government entities won't choose Florida when they can go to a state that doesn't require its Universities to tow the line and say that slavery was beneficial, ban on a whim books from school and public libraries and ban abortion at 6 weeks. It's just not attractive. And other states are very happy to have them.
Florida was Democratic for the first half of my life. Bill Nelson as Insurance commissioner protected the people from insurance scams, and when he later became our Senator he worked with Governors like Bob Graham and Lawton Chiles to keep Florida growing and booming.
MAGA voted out Bill Nelson and put Rick Scott, the man who perpetuated the biggest Medicare fraud in the history of the program, in his Seat.

As a college professor, I say that the anti-University crowd just has to 'sit and wait' for the collapse of Higher Ed in America. Enrollments are falling due to demographics and a realization that as we rebuild manufacturing in America we need more blue collar & new collar workers - and white collar jobs that college grads get can be easily replaced with AI.
Now that we are re-shoring manufacturing - and facing a housing construction crisis - Ed is not keeping up with the new economy. Our Ed system has discouraged going into the trades for generations while we off-shored manufacturing. As Unions crumbled, Higher Ed claimed to be the new pathway to Middle Class - since then our middle class has shrunk AND the cost of College has ballooned.
I see a tectonic shift in community colleges offering more and more vocational training classes (including courses such as ESL) but fewer and fewer transferable courses. Universities are increasingly selective regarding transferable credits they accept from CC's because they need to maintain their own enrollments and tuition income. OTOH: pharma tech, EMT & dental hygienists need training that does not require a 4 year degree.
As a democrat, I worry that if we cede the growing population of blue collar and new collar workers to the GOP we will become increasingly irrelevant.
I matriculated at U C, Berkeley, known as Bezerkly on Laugh Ln. As a California resident, we paid approximately $65. per semester in tuition. The greatest expence was buying the books the professors had authored and then made them assigned reading for their classes! It was during this time that,"Publish or Perish" was in vogue, and that was how the professors made their money. Tuitions have skyrocked since that time, along with everything else. I was,a Republican back then. I left the party under the Governorship of Reagan, and have not regretted it. The humanity as been reduced for average people and Corporations now control the vote in some places. Bigotry and party over country has in others. It is long past time to rid ourselves of tge Electoral College, though l think corporate control is too strong to accomplish this now. However, l believe it must be done to have free and fair elections by the voters.
I am a board certified Music Therapist, and my discipline requires a BA, MA, or PhD in the discipline of Music Therapy. Around 70 universities offer this program. It is a profession heavily embedded in the Psychology field, Music field, and specific areas of Neurology----"how the brain and body responds to music" not just listening to music, but being engaged in all forms of music. We must complete a 1100 hr internship once the academia is finished, and then sit for hours long, National Board Exams to have the credentials to practice as a Music Therapist. We must have Universities that have the teachers, and the program for us, so we can attain the degrees needed to serve individuals and groups of individuals in our communities, using elements of music to reach non-musical goals. I fear for many areas of need without support of our colleges and universities to attain the schooling needed for these allied health professions, and the specialties associated with them. Our work is important for the benefit of those we serve so they may live their best lives.

Jesus Christ saved my life recently, for many years I was lost, confused, depressed, and I was in need of a savior, he cures, heals and sets people free, he is calling to have a relationship with you, Jesus Christ wants to walk with you like a father walks with their son or daughter.
