A lot of the scenes in this movie didn't even feel like acting to me. I watched it with my jaw dropped at how NATURAL the dialogue was, how realistic. No movie is like this, and most people will get bored because of its slow pace and natural quality but that's EXACTLY WHAT MAKES THIS MOVIE SO OUTSTANDING AND UNIQUE AND, OHMYGOD, I FEEL LIKE I LIVED THROUGH IT.
One of my favorite parts about this movie was that since Mason ends up being about the same age I am now, the movie follows my own timeline. The Harry Potter Craze, the High School Musical breakout, when the Lady Gaga music video was released, and just the music and style throughout happened to Mason at about the same age it happened to me.
Mia Andrea Exactly! I'm the same age as Samantha so while I was watching the movie, I felt like I was reliving my childhood and adolescent years all over again (ex. the Soulja boy song when Mason and his friends were biking through the neighborhood). This has to be one of my new favorite movies of the year.
I can't read this comment with almost dying of nostalgia!! Oh man. I just watched this movie on my laptop, I wished i watched it in theaters. But I absolutely agree with your comment!!
I was smiling big through that whole clip. It makes me think of when I went camping as a kid. And gosh the clip just seems so natural. It doesn't feel like acting at all. I've got to see this.
This is exciting. It's from the same writer of the Before Sunrise, Sunset, Midnight Trilogy, moreover Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette, love both. Plus such an original concept. I can't believe nobody had done it before.
I really want to see this, 3 years on from the anniversary of my dad's death... and because I've got my own son and that clip reminds me of how he and I are already starting to talk to each other, with that wonderful encroachment of authority into a young kid's voice... I'm so crazy about my son AND daughter and just getting to be a dad... this is really an amazing thing that they've done in a film to capture all that in real time...
That clip is the essence of the movie, and Ellar`s acting or should i say not acting was phenomenal!!! And he grew up into such a wise and interesting person. No doubt in my top 10 movies ever.
APRIL 10, 2020 Watched this and I was mindblown. THIS WAS A UNIQUE MOVIE EXPERIENCE. So happy to see casts are still alive to finish the film. It would be heartbreaking if someone had died.
The movie was from a artistic view wonderful, but it is one of those movies you either love or hate. There is a lot of messages within the story as well just the usual "what is life" and "where do we go from here." Overall the movie can be looked at in many ways. I recommend that you watch the movie before you make your final judgement.
I loved this movie, great job by all the actors. To me it just felt like.... "Life." Don't know how to put it differently. So natural on the part of the actors.
Phenomenal movie and tremendous acting. I loved the authenticity of Ethan Hawke's portrayal of his dad. Perfection. Everything was so well done. I love the song 'Hero' in it too. I'm obsessed. But I definitely look forward to Ellar's career as it blossoms. I feel he is going to be huge in the industry. He is awesome.
Watching this was so weird for me because I'm the same age and it follows my own timeline, I love photography and I used to have a blue Toyota pickup like his but instead of it saying "yo" like in the movie mine said "yota" on the tailgate lol
the part of this movie is similar with the story of my life...when mason think there some relation with his mother with another guy...this is happen on me too.when my mom got married with my step father..but fortunately my step father is the kindness father that,i have.better than my rwal father...
Best of the year? I don't think so, just because it took place over 12 years, which is a really good gimmick for people to go see it just because of that. Don't get me wrong this was a good film but not as entertaining as Whiplash, John Wick, and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Also this doesn't really tell boyhood, oh sure he smokes and drinks alcohol in his teenage years, other then that he really doesn't anything else except act a little emo. I know some of you are going to say well boyhood ain't all the same. Just go watch the honest trailer and you will see what I'm talking about

Just go and watch Richard's "Before" series. It's as good as this movie. and the dialogues.. he knows what he's doing. Great director.
Rohan Pant sure! Okay :)
***** really? ok but i've never heard of it
***** alright cool i'll watch
Exactly.

I really hope Ellar gets a nomination. What a commitment to film for so many years
This guy seems so chill
This movie was spectacular.
Best of the year
It was amazing. Really made me think about my life
TokyoKazama It was the opposite of spectacular, and that's not meant to be taken in a bad way. The movie is amazing.

I know! I was curious about his response to the cringe worthy q
What a genuine guy
everything that has to do with 12 years will win an oscar
:(
...for best actress
RubberDuckStudios Patricia Arquette absolutely earned that Oscar.
LET. HIM. TALK. Jimmy we're here to hear him!
This is honestly one of my favourite movies! It was amazing! So real and funny and emotional and I just can't praise it enough! Just...wow
swag dude
this movie deserves an Oscar. It was epic
I was smiling big through that whole clip. It makes me think of when I went camping as a kid. And gosh the clip just seems so natural. It doesn't feel like acting at all. I've got to see this.
I completely laughed my ass off during that Star Wars scene!!!
I love that tie.
I saw Boyhood yesterday amazing movie!
I'm the same age as the actor playing mason so it was quite nostalgic and emotional to watch this all unfold. Great movie.
movie has such an interesting concept! can't wait to watch it

This guy is so underrated. He has a bright future ahead. I look forward to other movies he may be doing.

They made another star wars, Han's son is the Sith Lord
+mymocs61 hahaha so many Star Wars references in the movie :)
Dude your voice 😍... I just wanna kidnap you and force you to tell ramble story until I fall asleep
Ellar Coltrane looks like Hayden Christiansen.
omg I thought about it too
poor guy didn't star in this movie for 12 years to get three words in on jimmy fallon
sam carcano
fallon is following in Leno's footsteps.
I can't even imagine how it would be like to watch yourelf in the movie for the first time, it's like having all your life recorded
That Star Wars part tho!.... They did make a Star Wars movie too
I saw it recently, and i was laughing my ass out at this part hahah everything they said was true

oh my god this film is probably very exciting to watch for people of the same age like mason just like i was
I would love to have coffee with this guy. Great movie 10/10
looks amazing. gotta wait until august 15 to see it in my city but I somehow think it will be worth the wait
Hope this wins Best motion picture of the year, really awesome!
I loved this movie, great job by all the actors. To me it just felt like.... "Life." Don't know how to put it differently. So natural on the part of the actors.

A really interesting concept for a movie. I look forward to watching it.

Paul walker? how??
The single best movie ever made imo
anyone else think that he might be a Taylor lautner look-alike?
This guy is damn cute
Lol i agree about the blade throwing thing. haha *SOMETHING BAD'S GONNA HAPPEN!!!*
the simpsons made a episode called barthood
+Dweebro yeah the one good episode in years, that's how i found out about the movie

yeah.. RIP Paul Walker !!
exactly,i just can''t remember his name haha
omg jimmy fallon literally let him say three words
12 Years A Boy
He didnt even let him talk wtaf
the part of this movie is similar with the story of my life...when mason think there some relation with his mother with another guy...this is happen on me too.when my mom got married with my step father..but fortunately my step father is the kindness father that,i have.better than my rwal father...
super funny considering that at the end of this year there will be ANOTHER star wars movie that takes place after Return of the Jedi.
who picked the tie?!?!
the star wars thing LOL if only they knew
making a new star warssss????? Oh wait. That just happened :)
Unfortunately they did another star wars, and the boy was right there was nothing to tell after return of the Jedi...
does he know he looked like anakin
Yes there is another stawars movie
If Justin Bieber and Dua Lipa had a baby together, it would be Ellar Coltrane.
the tie is veeeeeery distracting.
Umm aa.. i.. umm... aa.. ee.. ho..oo..
After return of the Jedi they ruined the franchise ...
i could grow a better beard than him (Ellar)
why is he so skinny.. somebody please feed him something!
