This is what I like. The guy really embodies photography. No BS, no drama stories. Just pure photography!
Yet another ‘best ever’ Walkie Talkie what a warm-hearted, talented guy. Someone somewhere would should be funding a book of his amazing work!
Best way to start the weekend
Dave was one of the first dudes I befriended when I moved to the Bay 20 years ago and I say this with the utmost respect and appreciation - he’s infinitely talented and has an incredible eye. I love hearing his perspective and seeing his artistic growth. Keep killing it, Dave Root!!
Paulie B, never give up, keep making these. Love every second!
Love the simplicity of this guy. Simple philosophy simple camera setup simple answers ✨✨
David Root!!! Legend!
Love the “get out there and grind” vibe here.
Absolute legend and my favorite photographer!
Always great to see Bay Area getting some love.
Paulie. If you’re reading this, please, if you’re in the area-there’s this photographer doing great work. Put that on everything. Guy’s name is Paulie B.
Plz walkie talkie him asap
I live in Albany, but work in SF, and Market Street is a really crazy place to take pictures.
So hyped you’re getting to document SF street photography
David's photos always amaze me! He captures the most incredible moments. So glad he got some well deserved love on this channel!
P.S. I wanna play Market St. bingo
Another banger video Paulie & David! These videos give me so much inspiration. Always makes my day. Keep it up bro!
Cool to learn more about David's work and thoughts about street photography. Great video as always, Paulie!
Get’em David!!! So happy for you! I hope everything keeps working out for you and only gets better and better! Best eye out there
I didn't know of David until now. This was so enjoyable. I could never get tired of watching walks (or drives) through the streets of San Francisco. Has me wanting to throw on a longer lens and do some SF street photography, a departure from my typical work.
Another well done video highlighting the work of a hard working contemporary photographer. And thank you Mr Root for turning me on to the Lark Bar, I intend to grab a pint there soon!
DOPE! I always see David in passing in SF out on the street 'tog grind.
Still one of the best photography channels.
Thanks David
Thanks Pauli
Have a great weekend 🎉
Great stuff. Love that you went to the "other side" to showcase what they're doing there!
Your work and passion for these great talks are deeply appreciated Man, keep it up!
Really loved this. I've never been to SF so it's nice to get an inside perspective of the city
great work David! looking forward to that zine
This upload made my day ❤
Awesome piece paulie !
I think there was a sort of a "golden age" of SF street photography that was from the mid 60's to the early 80's. After that the vibe on the street really changed
Paulie B! Glad to see you bringing walkie talkie to the west coast! If you come to Portland, I will give you a tour of my favorite places to shoot
I miss that area, used to do morning walks from Powell Station, through the areas you walked through in this video, Thanks!
Awsome ep!
Streets of San Francisco, great show.
Hell yeah, David!!
“The ‘work/life/photography’ balance”
Root is the fucking man
Dude this guy gets it… masterful with his craft
I visited San Francisco last summer and can feel what David is saying about it being in transition. Didn’t feel as vibrant as I was expecting. Lots of vacant areas. Hopefully the city can get its mojo back. Ps love your photos Mr. Root ✌🏼
I was born in concord and frequented San Fran. I'm 35 now.
What I can say is places in Cali, and Cali itself, tend to sell themselves as being something they're not.
San Fran was always kind of dusky on an average day.
@@Bimnobodyleave ah okay. That also makes sense. People were telling me things really dropped off during the Pandemic so I thought it was more a recent change.
The truth is always somewhere in the middle. Don’t be fooled by anyone telling you SF isn’t hurting from self imposed economic impacts of COVID
@@ryanwaterbury7069 Self imposed aspects of leftism is what has done it to San Francisco.
@ Bimnobodyleave not powell st and union square tho.
I like the well-framed photo of the petri dish.
I love the walkie talkies
4:23 excellent question
Crazy good . I’m in San Francisco in a few weeks .
Ayyy I loved this episode! I actually had the pleasure of running into the two of you on this walkie talkie, not even knowing it was you two! I even commented on your video setup "ND filter on the phone, y'all know what you're doing" 😂
Brilliant episode
Holy shit I know that dude! 🤩📸
Another banger Paulie. But Rip our Mju ii prices… again 😂
6:00 Totally random comment, but there is a bench like this at the shopping center on Carson Street in Long Beach, California by Heartwell Park, at the intersection of Bellflower Blvd.
Paulie, we miss you. Hope you are doing good!
Great guy. Not a poser.
Rooooot 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
he's putting free game out there with hamburger eyes 👀so sick
Nice 2 see a SF real one !!!
You had a celebrity of sorts in here briefly! Alice Wong crosses behind Root in her wheelchair when he’s talking about the profane bible guy. Cool!
You’re on your game with the Walkie-talkie
SF used to be my favorite city to shoot, better than nyc IMO... almost moved there... but man, did it fell off hard. i know so many people, and photographers, who got robbed after visiting. somebody has to document the chaos i suppose lol
Take a small cheap film camera and leave your valuables at home.
That’s how us old dinosaurs did it in NYC back in the 70s.
Raggy clothes and very small cameras. Look as poor as you can and blend in best you can.
Honestly, I would've pressed charges against that woman who slapped the camera out of his hand if that had happened to me. There are worse problems, to be sure, but technically that is illegal.
Documenting the human condition in 2024 is a worthwhile endeavor. Not always pretty, sometimes beautiful.
Really interesting guy, just wants to do photography for the pure joy of it.
Does anyone know what camera he was using here?
Olympus mju-2 I think. It has a 35mm focal length.
Do a walkie talkie with geloy concepcion!
16:04 😄
I've been doing Instagram for a minute now and every time I post, I feel like I should quit. I barley get any support and no matter how "satisfied" I am with the photos, people don't seem to like it. I really don't know what to do anymore, I don't want to give up but I also don't want to take photos I don't like ,, I don't know what to do... I'm feeling really lost and these videos help but I don't know, I can't help but feel like it's all for nothing.
you gotta do it for yourself. If you try to take photos for other people, I doubt you will ever feel like it is worth it
You can’t base things off of likes and the algorithm has changed.
Do what makes you happy not the gram etc.
Like Dr. Dre on the 2001!!!!!
Its kinda cutty ion really advertise itt
Type shit
Im a long island based photographer with a small following, that being said, can I be on walkie talkie?
@icebxndit on the east coast (philly) needs to be featured on this as well
ayyyyy
help the band out with 1000 dollars
damn powell st is dead
How do these guys make money?
Lots of folks left photography so there's more work in it again but it basically pays the same as a barista when you average out all the gigs.
They don’t - they have day jobs or a rich smart wife who supports them.
They make some money off zines and print sales.
They can write off business expenses.
Not much money in street. Some photograph weddings or commercial- both of which pays more.
Street photography is a labor of love!
A hobby for many. An expensive hobby.
Most work real jobs.
If they do make money /is their only income from street it’s a bare bones lifestyle for most.
As in young, single, no children, no car, coach surf etc no responsibility to others. Etc
Anyone know anybody making their entire income off of street? That would be a great interview!
I'd be surprised if they made anything on their street work. If anything, lots of people are losing money doing street.
@@coastalartistlivingonislan8395 Sorry for not being clear. I meant photography work in general, but tbh, even that is still a side hustle. I just wanted to say there's more work in photography since people dropped out after the IG hype.
@@TDub777 Yeah, nobody's really making money off of street except for prints or zines, but people are making a little money doing side hustles with photo work: product, food, weddings, reportage. Nobody is getting rich doing this and it's all a labor of love.
Why aren’t you aging, Mr. Root?
Ted Pushinsky is way too close to another name
