I feel like I just understood more about watercolour in 5 minutes than I have in the past 5 years, thank you for this video, everything makes a so much more sense all of a sudden
I’m a beginner and must have watched at least a hundred videos since I started about a year and a half back. I have never seen anything like this! Would you please do a simple little landscape using this technique. Thank you.
Great tips and a lovely aesthetic sense. So, after 30 years I'm getting back into watercolours because I need art in my life right now to keep me sane while the world falls apart and rockets fly overhead. But, why else would we need art but to make sense of the senseless? So, congrats Danny. You're now my art teacher. Good luck ;)
I absolutely suck at watercolor, but this video has been very useful! Thank you for providing the traditional art world some advice! Reminder: drink water daily. God bless you and your family! ❤️❤️
Be aware that if you paint yellow over blue, there's a good chance you'll end up with green. Depends which blue you use. Payne's or Davy's Greys (which are both actually bluey grey, although admittedly the latter sometimes has more of a greenish tinge) are much more reliable, and won't create green when used in layering. It's also worth bearing in mind the old adage "Tone does the work and colour gets the glory".
True! I think the apple might be the perfect subject here because green doesn’t necessarily look out of place. I’ve definitely used paynes grey as well.
Great lesson! Really emphasized the importance of an under painting. Few tutorials today even mention an under painting much less show how to do it correctly. If the Apple were to be green or orange would you still use a blue under painting?
Effectively, the blue is the shadowing, which is a good way to begin. Personally, depending upon the predominant colour of the finished artwork, I mix a shadow colour using two primaries and a complimentary colour. In this case, I would've used a hint of a red-biased hue to slightly warm the shadow mix.
Thank you SO much for this amazing video! I"ve been struggling with watercolors and layering. I just had a huge AHA moment when I painted along with the video. I would love to see more videos from you about underpainting, glazing etc. I really like your style of teaching/explaining
To ask what we'd want you to paint next would put you in a tough position. There's really only one other thing you could do to match but not top what you just did. You just painted the one fruit most resembling the Heart, to pull a Newton and add an empty clutched hand above would be to paint the most powerful symbol in all the Universe. The gravity of Love. Everything else, flowers, landscapes, sky, sun and moon, ocean & waves, people, all are constructs of where Love abodes, that simple apple. Good technique. Thanks for the tutorial.
Thank you so much! I loved your tutorial! You are going to be added to my list of mentors who are helping me learn the basic concepts of good art in realism style.
It isn’t always necessary to keep your paints super clean or your water. However, having more than one water cup to switch between can help. Also rinsing your brush before getting a new color is a must for keeping really pure colors.
Sometimes! If you don’t want the paint to blend together, you should let it dry. If it blends too much everything might turn into a brown blob. Dry paper will make sharp lines, damp paper will let us blur and mix a little. Trial and error!
H2O oil paint is the shiz niz , blending is fun now, current project is of a Blue Shark with crepuscular rays highlighting the main subject through the ocean surface. Painting is a ton of fun with these aqua oils.
It’s just a reference. You can print whatever you want. Also, the stem hold does have a dark shadow in it, it just fades to a highlight. I probably could have had it lighter on top 🤷🏼♂️
this is cool. I like the layer of yellow, too, that makes so much sense for getting the highlights in first. Question: does it matter what blue you use for underpainting? by that I mean do you prefer a more or less granulating color? or do you have certain blues that you rely on for underpainting specifically? thanks so much
Hi, your apple is so well done, it looks realistic!. Great job! If you ever feel like painting a Tropical fish, I would appreciate it. ❤Thank you. Helene
Hello, just found your video and it’s very useful about under painting. Since watercolor paper comes in so many varieties and can have different effects, what kind of paper did you use? Also your brush? Synthetic or natural hair or a combination or both? Would really appreciate information about these details! Thank you.
Interesting. I will give this a try. Thank you. A kind of pet peeve I have with TH-cam demos is the presenter's seeming need to add music, which is almost always too loud and very distracting. You are teaching a lesson here, and people (at least this person) want to hear what you are saying. The volume of the music, if you use it at all, should be much lower than what it is.
TNX 4 the email feedback, I will use student grade until I develop my STYLE while placing artwork into my two writing series Kaleidoscope {short stories} and Rainbow {children book genre }
For the longest time, I was scared to use blue in my work. I do portrait a lot and I was comfortable using the warm skin tone and brown for shadow. Then I experimented mapping shadow with cool tone and the subject came out like an alien but when I added the warm tone the work just looked more complete and cohesive.
I just discovered your channel, this is a superb tutorial! Thank you very much! The music was a bit too loud though and overwhelmed your voice a bit too much.
@@rankatimm9723 If you let the blue dry before adding in the yellow it won't turn green. It's fun to experiment, though - sometimes a bit of green in an apple makes it more real.

This really illustrated the power of watercolor in layers. I feel like I could do this in my painting and I will definitely try! Thank you!
Love this technique! Tried it based on your Instagram reel but having the longer video helps so much more. Thanks!
How did it work?

Didn’t know that Payne’s Gray and Davy’s Gray are the optimum blues to use for undertones. Thanks!
Great lesson! Really emphasized the importance of an under painting. Few tutorials today even mention an under painting much less show how to do it correctly. If the Apple were to be green or orange would you still use a blue under painting?
Usually blue is a good go to because of the reflection of the blue sky, but feel free to experiment!
@@dannydrwing - Good point. I’ll give it a whirl. Thanks.
Wow best painted apple I've ever seen! So realistic for watercolor :) Could you paint a bird? A crow would be great for Halloween.
Wow please paint everything!!!!

I appreciate your process . Under painting with blue was a surprise to me. Very effective. I hope I can give it a try. Thanks
Nicely demonstrated, it's a very oil painting effect really.. Interesting
Cool! I wish someone would do a watercolor video on how to get the paint on the brush, keep water and paints clean while going between them etc.

Glad you liked it!
This is great. It sure solves my struggle with shadows. Exciting view, thanks.
Thank you for sharing - your art is impressive. Would you be able to make a tutorial on simple scenery? 😍
Love it!!

Great tutorial. A village scene or city scene tutorial would be nice
On the list! Might do a sunrise skyline type of thing soon.
Very interesting!❤😊
Can you make a tutorial on a realistic nature study like a plant in a pot ive just gotten into watercolor and it would be perfect for art class
That sounds like a great idea!!
I would like to see your technique used on a loose, watercolor portrait. Nice work! How long have you been at this?
About a year!
Danged. That is encouraging. Greetings from France!@@dannydrwing

Why is the "stem hole" so dark though? In the reference image it's one of the brightest parts of the image

Loved the way you layer I’m painting tiles right now and it’s a whole new challenge but by your method it works so thank you
Fabulous tutorial! Are you layering/glazing or doing some wet on wet? I know it's dry for the highlights, but is there any wet on wet in this piece?
Mostly dry with each layer, a little wet on wet within each layer, but no reason you can’t use one or the other!

Love the underpainting technique. What blue did you use and do you have a preferred brand of paint?
I think it was ultramarine, I believe more saturated is usually better.

Do we have to let the paint dry before applying a layer or is it wet on wet?
Usually I let it dry!
