Panasonic G85 - Out-of-the-Box Shooting Setup! [4K UHD]

  • This is a rundown of all of the factory settings that I customized immediately upon purchasing my G85. Panasonic cameras have very deep menu systems compared to Nikon or especially Canon systems, so it's always beneficial to explore all of your options for customization.

    Thank you SO much! Finally. An actual tutorial. I've been searching for one, only to find dozens of reviews with "tutorial" in the title. I bought my first "real camera", having used a cell phone for years. I have no clue how to use this G85

      Paula Elliott I don’t have the link handy here at the moment but there is a guy who does a 2 hour run through on just about anything you can imagine on the G85. Highly recommended. I just got my G85 today and while I’ve had a bit of experience with DSLRs over the years this vid really helped me migrate from the Canon world to the LUMIX world with a low-pain threshold. If you reply me here I’ll find the link and post it for you in a subsequent reply.

    Great guide, gives a much better understanding of some of the menu settings. It complements a neat book by David Thorpe that I have bought (no other connection!) called "The Panasonic G80/85 Menu System Simplified" which lists all menu settings and Davids comments on their reason etc.

    I really enjoyed your video on the G85, which I discovered after I had ordered one but have not yet received. The print-out at the end was very useful, summarizing your recommendations, so I full-framed in and took a screen shot of it while paused, and saved it to my photos on my MacBook so I can print it out and make reference to it when I begin playing with the camera. So, thank you!

    Really Good for someone like myself that just purchased this camera, should be more like it.
    I got caught with one setting that I set the Filter Settings to on in REC menu and that greyed out a lot of options including flash. Had to get help with that one.
    Your explanation were very clear for someone just starting out. I posted a link in the forum I visit.

    What is your stabilizer settings when you are shooting video that you will be panning. Do you have the E-stabilization on or off?

  • @normanskistreet
    @normanskistreet ปีที่แล้ว

    Just a point regarding the shutter type setting. I'd personally set that to EFC rather than auto. In auto it will use fully mechanical shutter which is two stage so increased risk of shutter shock/vibration. EFC reduces that to mechanical 2nd stage only so less vibration. Fully electronic is even better regarding shutter shock but has disadvantages such as banding in artificial light and can distort subjects that are moving at speed. Also electronic shutter may reduce bit rate of file so increased risk of shadow noise in post. I may be wrong on that last point though because some cameras reduce the bit rate from 12 to 10, others do not. Best to investigate if you want a definite answer regarding the G80.

    When setting the economy setting for 5 seconds, when I push the DISP button, the Information page does not come up, it just causes the Settings (single wrench) mode to go to page 3. So, I don't think the economy setting is activated. How do I get to the Information page to then observe the camera shut off? Any help would be appreciated.

After changing some settings on my G85, I am now getting a B&W image in my viewfinder and digital display when I'm in M,S,A,P,iA, and Video shooting modes, Only in C1 & C2 do my finder and digital display show a color image. I can't figure out what I did to cause this situation, does anyone know what I could have done wrong and how can I get back to a color viewfinder/display?

    Very interesting presentation. I have been giving serious consideration to purchasing this camera but with our de valued Canadian dollar, I have been spending extra time looking. Since I can only afford one lens, the 14-140 lens is on my mind. Any thoughts?

    • @derekaggs11
      @derekaggs11  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Is the Canadian market privy to the G85 + 12-60mm f/3.5-5.6 kit? In the US, it's a great deal at $997 (with some outfits offering a $100 gift card on top of that). That would be my recommendation if you're on a budget. The 14-140mm is attractive but I will say the extra 2mm wider end of the 12-60mm is helpful for my style of shooting... and you get WR too.

    • @ookiemand
      @ookiemand 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also think the 12 mm is more useful then the 140mm tele. Consider you want to shoot family indoors for instance.
      Derek has a great video on his lens selection, and I plan on getting nearly the same set. Currently I'm shooting with my 'old' FZ150, 24-600 reach. And 12 / 24mm is a good starting point. Remember the G85 does crop a little bit in 4k video, so any extra width is appreciated. The new 100-300 is much better then the older version, and that is going to be my second lens. It is also great for portraits, really simplifying the background.

    • @derekaggs11
      @derekaggs11  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bernardo Silva It's mainly a matter of personal preference. 24p output is more like what you see in feature films. You could also argue that each frame is higher quality since 24p and 30p have the same bitrate at 4K.

    Amazing guide Dereck!! As we said in a comment a few videos back we just bought this camera and we didn't know some of the options. For example, the beep volume or the battery economy. Thank you again! oh, do you know how to send a picture from camera to smartphone via wi-fi? We were trying it but the password doesn't work ^^U

    • @derekaggs11
      @derekaggs11  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The WiFI can be a bit tricky. The problem is, I don't use it enough to really get "good" at it! I enable it on the camera, log on to the WiFI network created BY the camera from my iPhone, and then open the app. Then it's connected. From there I can do Live View and send photos over.... JPEGS only.

    The main difference I use is when shooting stills I shoot raw plus jpg and set it to 3:2 and use L.Monochrome so I have a black and white jpg along with a 4:3 colour raw should I need it. I find it works best with street photography. Otherwise my setup is almost identical.
