Gratulon pro unu jaro parolanta Esperanton! Ĝi estas la lingvo de la estonteco! (Se nur pli multaj junuloj scius, ke ĝi ekzistas.) Mi ankaŭ parolas Esperanton kaj la hispanan je meza nivelo, sed volas lerni haitian kreolan baldaŭ, kiam Duolingo liberigos la kurson. Bonvolu plu afiŝi la filmetojn!

You must be gifted when it comes to languages. Either that or I am just especially non-gifted (probably the case). I have been studying Esperanto collectively for more than a year (admittedly starting and stopping) and my abilities are still pretty rudimentary. I'd be curious to know exactly what your learning methods were because I feel like I'm way behind where I should be.

I don’t think I’m necessarily more or less gifted, but I did spend three hours everyday studying Esperanto for the first three months and I don’t think I ever skipped a day. It’s all about the hours spent!

@@sorenpx I spent a good bit of time working through the Duolingo course. I took part in a couple of different group classes over Zoom, and I spoke with teachers on italki often. After reaching a certain level, I started speaking to teachers on Ekparolu.
Initially, I couldn't speak well at all, but I forced myself to speak with people because I knew it was the only way to get better. The only way to get through it is to keep trying!
Aside from speaking a lot and using Duolingo, I used Anki flashcards that I created every single day for half an hour to improve my vocabulary, I listened to podcasts, and I read a lot. A LOT.
I know that it can be frustrating to not progress as quickly as you would like to, but the journey is part of the excitement! I find that the most important part of language learning for me is to try to speak everyday and to not miss any days of studying!
Don't quit, you'll get there! Join some groups on the Duolingo event page!

@@mosesfamilyadventures Thanks for the tips. One problem I have with trying to speak with people is that, first, I can never understand what they said and always have to ask them to restate what they said in English, or go super-slow and define about half the words they used. And then when I try to respond, I have to ask "how do you say this" or "how do you say that" because I don't know how to express the thought in my head. The person I am trying to talk to gets frustrated and I get both frustrated and discouraged.
When it comes to vocabulary, I find that there are a fair amount of words that I can recognize if I'm reading but I can't immediately recall those words if I'm writing or trying to speak.
You mentioned that you did a lot of reading. Out of curiosity, what materials did you read the most? Did you employ some strategy where you started with simpler texts and systematically moved into more advanced material or did you just jump into the deep end?
Lastly, what were your favorite podcasts? I have tried to listen to a few but I can only catch a few words here and there and never really know what they're talking about.
      Thanks again for your help!

@@sorenpx I'd encourage you to spend some more time building vocabulary (I really like Anki) and talking to yourself. Construct sentences that you would use when introducing yourself to a new person. Have a conversation aloud as if you're talking to them! Make sure you have a couple of good sentences such as, "kiel oni diras ____" so that you don't have to ask in English or, "Mi ne komprenas." I practiced introducing myself over and over again!
I started with a lot of easy reading but also Alice in Wonderland, because I know the book almost by heart. If you can find a book that you already know really well, that's a great way to start!
As for podcasts, I like "La Malfamuloj" and "kern.punkto." I never worry about catching every single word. It's important for your brain to just hear as much as the language as possible. I also watched a lot of TH-cam videos (without subtitles) by Evildea.

@@mosesfamilyadventures Thanks again for the info. I think you're right about vocabulary. I'll look into Anki.
One issue that I have run into with vocabulary is that one word can have like 5 different meanings or the meaning can just be odd and vague. Some of the correlatives, for instance, are hard to even understand on a conceptual level.
In any case, I can appreciate your resolve and your ability to make a plan, stick to it, and see it through to the end. If I may ask one last question, why is it exactly that you wanted to learn Esperanto so badly? What is it about the language that attracted you?
