- A quick overview of the Surface RT in 2024 and how to install Pi Os
The whole project is made by someone else and as such not everything is guaranteed to work first try. If you need to reinstall windows the Gitbook page does also have a tutorial on that here windows-rt-dev...
I don’t think I mentioned it in the vid but when setting up the flashdrive you should be using a separate computer since the RT won’t be able to run Rufus or other programs to create boot drives

Text in video was backwards apparently
sudo apt full-upgrade
Doood!!! Havnt been able to use mine since ms just abandoned this. Had a RT2 that i might have bricked, a friend gave me his RT1 in exchange as he loves a good project. I havnt been using it since. Finally .. can have it in the kitchen to search for receipes and such!
Thank you man! Earned a sub and a like! Cheers from Sweden
Glad I could help! Also love the Titanfall pfp
just subscribed, great video!
tysm for the video
May not be practical, but fun projects giving these ewaste machines a second chance :)
Oh ya, barely practical with a device this old but gives it ever so slightly more life
9:40 took me a full 10 minutes to realize that the red text that pops up is backwards of what it needs to be, because i was focused on that instead of the words lol
sudo apt full-upgrade not sudo full apt-upgrade (im SUPER new to linux)
also as im realizing it, the spoken words are backwards too. only way to notice is previous knowledge and/or looking at the terminal window behind it (no hate, just info)
Not gonna lie I didn't notice I had it backwards I think I just wrote what I spoke. Just updated the description with the corrected text.
Well Done Sir! New Sub: Dryden, Mich.
I have 2 of these the Old Man bought years ago without asking me first.
I recently found them and the chargers (In completely different locations) So I want to give this a shot...
Looks like its a bit easier these days, or did I miss the Golden Keys part?
Its a lot easier nowadays i'm fairly sure due to the golden keys! I'm not exactly sure how it was done before.
Greate video. Congratulation. I want to do update my old RT. Is the touch working after the install?
The touch screen does work work in Pi Os
@@ShortQuickTech thank you for your replay.
excelente, probado y funcionando
I've already made it to the part after the copy on the HDD of the surface, but when I remove the usb and start direct from the HDD, it gave me some errors loading the OS and it starts only on terminal/console mode, I dont have any graphic interface, could you give me a little guide here?? Thanks for the great tutorial!!!
Did you update startup.nsh under bootfs at about 9:10? If that’s not input correctly the Surface won’t know where to look for the os
@ShortQuickTech yes I've modify it for the mmcblk0p2, the OS starts, even it starts with the user that I define, but like I was mentioning it show some errors on the loading of the OS, :/ and doesnt start with GUI, Only if I boot from the USB
UPDATE: I've re-copy the sd card to the HDD now it loads the GUI but not at all, it only show the trash can icon, but without any other menu or button or something like that
Did you have any problems with keyboard recognition when booting from a usb initially? I can't get pass the setup for account since my keyboards aren't recognized even though they should be plug and play
I personally haven't had any issue with that. I know when reinstalling windows it might not recognize it without disconnecting and reconnecting the keyboard
I have installed it. Now could you help me how to get back to windows after installing pi on RT device
If you mean to boot back into Windows while also having Pi Os, then you don’t. Typically you only have one operating system installed at a time. If you want to reinstall Windows then check out the Gitbook page that is used in the tutorial windows-rt-devices.gitbook.io/windows/tools/windows-media-builder
Can you just use this jailbreak to run unsigned Win32 apps? I'm more interested in just running Win32 apps on ARM32 here.
With what I showed it wouldn’t be able to do that. Though according to the Gitbook page most of this is from, following this windows-rt-devices.gitbook.io/windows/jailbreaks/umci-audit-mode should allow you to run unsigned apps
Thanks for sharing friend, could we install Telegram or chrome on this device please?
Does it work with Surface 2 with nvidia tegra 4 soc? i have the same windows build Windows rt 8.1 version 6.3.9600
I’m not 100% sure. It looks like it should be supported but i’d recommend checking out the rest of the Gitbook page openrt.gitbook.io/open-surfacert
Does WiFi & Blutooth Works???
Wifi definitely works. I myself haven’t been able to get bluetooth working under pi os
I’m having issues with it just stopping it boot and going to a black screen with text about startup.nsh
All I can think is that you might not have edited the file with the correct text that tells it where to look for a storage device at around 9:13
@@ShortQuickTech Well i cant boot into it to change the file, it just stops
@@ShortQuickTech Its more of an issue with the first boot into live
Are you no longer able to boot into Pi Os via the flash drive to edit?
@@ShortQuickTech I wasnt at all
