His style of gayiki was pretty simple, soft, effortless, soothing, and soulful but overbearing and difficult to emulate ! Besides, the great Khan Saab had something divine in his voice which made him so special ! What a beautiful composition it was ! How soulful was the great Mehdi Hassan Saab in performing it ! Here, in this ghazal, it was as if the great Khan Saab had infused life into the beautiful kalam of Shehzad Saab with the exact feel, as depicted in the kalam, owing to his magical voice and inimitable style of gayiki ! Although not so highly educated, Mehdi Hassan Saab had become a larger than life figure owing to his manifold qualities including his deft handling of ragas, their successful application in producing his divine creations without disturbing their pristine purity and his inimitable style of ghazal gayiki He was a talisman for his contemporaries and juniors, as he possessed great inspirational qualities and could instill confidence, motivation and respect in them. Lata Mangeskar, another legendary singer and his contemporary, held him in very high esteem. For his fans, he was like a Demigod owing to his inspirational singing qualities and universal appeal.

No body like the great MEHDI HASSAN, as Ghazal Gaeeki is concerned. In the presnet age, the new pop singers has made music with out any meaning. Mostly depend on video and not their singing capacity. The one and only regret in my life is that I have never had an opportunity to listen to the great Khan Saab performing live during his lifetime. What a great feeling it would have been! I consider it as my greatest misfortune! Had I seen him performing live during his lifetime, I would have felt highly blessed! As I'll luck would have it, I will have to carry over this regret to my next birth-- if there be any!
Amrendra Borah Sahab, I had the privilege of hearing Khan Sahab twice in Delhi. First time it was during his very first tour of India in 1975-76. Till then he had not gained popularity in Indian masses. The program was held at the Modern School Auditorium. After the 2nd break less than 100 ghazal listeners were left in the hall. We all were sitting on the mattresses and Gao Takias spread there. Along with my elder brother and sister we listened till his last three ghazals past 1.00am at night when he sang: First was "Kya Bhala Mujh Ko Parakhney Ka Natija Nikla", second, "Ab Ke Hum Bichrey" and final one was of Mir Taqi Mir's "Dekh To Dil Ke Ja'an Se Uthta Hai"! He visited Delhi again after a year or two and then the program was held at Ghalib Academy's auditorium near the Mata Sundri College. Certainly I consider my self blessed to have heard him live!

Great Ghazal Singer Specially Classical ghazal. Kitna bhi suno Jee nahin bherta. Classical singing that too in ghazals is very very difficult but Mehdi Hassan is very fond of this. Raag Ahir Bhairab had found it's truest expression in the majestic voice of the great Khan Saab. What a beautiful rendering it was? It was just like applying balm to a shattered heart so as to make it function again. Will there ever be another singer to sing his heart out like this!

To my technical knowledge in classical muisc & it's composition, referring to Mehdi Hassan comment, the name of this Raga is: "AHEERI TODI" Detail: The "Teevar Gandhaar" of Raga AHEER BHAIRON has been used as "Komal Gandhaar". The rest of the Raga composition is the same. Mehdi Hassan is right, it is very LESS used, due to it's application. The poet is Khatir Ghaznavi, who hailed from Peshawar. The Sangeet Natal Academy is located at the Mandi House crossing in Delhi. I was doing research to write a propial for serial on the Sufi & Sants of South Asia to be submitted to Doordarshan. This was in 1996. During that time I would sit for hours in the library on the GF of that building. Though I would pick up books but one day a staff member of the library on inquiring about the work I was dokng; informed me like books there is also a collection of Audio Tapes, Music Records and Cassettes in the library. I could not resist using that fantastic resource to cite some of the compositions of the Sufi & Sants in my proposal. Practically all national classical singers records were there. I have serious fear that by now all that from the archives would have either been destroyed or would have been sold out to private companies by those being custodians of that treasure. Same I am certain would have happened to the archives of Doordarshan and AIR.

Indeed, a superb Ghazal Gayeki by Mehdi Hassan, the GREAT. The name of Raga is: "AHEERI TODI" The musical note "GANDHAR" is KOMAL (soft) and not "TEEVAR" (Sharp). Using Gandhar as teevar, becomes "AHEER BHAIRON". This is technical aspect of Raga, for the TH-cam members, who are interested. simply majestic!! mehdi saab -voice of god!! these days its becoming so difficult to get this music on proper cd format...some monumental effort should be taken up by mehdi saab's home country to save and document all of his recorded studio and live music for the generations to come...this is the least that the country can do for a artist who gave the so much!!!

No body like the great MEHDI HASSAN, as Ghazal Gaeeki is concerned. In the presnet age, the new pop singers has made music with out any meaning. Mostly depend on video and not their singing capacity. The one and only regret in my life is that I have never had an opportunity to listen to the great Khan Saab performing live during his lifetime. What a great feeling it would have been! I consider it as my greatest misfortune! Had I seen him performing live during his lifetime, I would have felt highly blessed! As I'll luck would have it, I will have to carry over this regret to my next birth-- if there be any!
Amrendra Borah Sahab, I had the privilege of hearing Khan Sahab twice in Delhi. First time it was during his very first tour of India in 1975-76. Till then he had not gained popularity in Indian masses. The program was held at the Modern School Auditorium. After the 2nd break less than 100 ghazal listeners were left in the hall. We all were sitting on the mattresses and Gao Takias spread there. Along with my elder brother and sister we listened till his last three ghazals past 1.00am at night when he sang: First was "Kya Bhala Mujh Ko Parakhney Ka Natija Nikla", second, "Ab Ke Hum Bichrey" and final one was of Mir Taqi Mir's "Dekh To Dil Ke Ja'an Se Uthta Hai"! He visited Delhi again after a year or two and then the program was held at Ghalib Academy's auditorium near the Mata Sundri College. Certainly I consider my self blessed to have heard him live!
Cameron Ahmad Saab, How highly blessed you were to have listened to this legend of the legends live twice in his life time! But as ill luck would have it, I shall have to wait until my next birth, if there be any, for such an eventuality! Thankful for responding to my wish of the life time.

Raag Ahir Bhairab had found it's truest expression in the majestic voice of the great Khan Saab. What a beautiful rendering it was? It was just like applying balm to a shattered heart so as to make it function again. Will there ever be another singer to sing his heart out like this!

Perhaps,it would be in the fitness of things that before going into any sort of argument on the matter, it would be in the fitness of things if we leave the decision on nomenclature of the raga to the pundits of classical music instead with a view to meet the ends of neutrality !

To my technical knowledge in classical muisc & it's composition, referring to Mehdi Hassan comment, the name of this Raga is: "AHEERI TODI" Detail: The "Teevar Gandhaar" of Raga AHEER BHAIRON has been used as "Komal Gandhaar". The rest of the Raga composition is the same. Mehdi Hassan is right, it is very LESS used, due to it's application. Thanks rahmankant for uploading this gem.....nobody can match Mehdi Hasan sahib the way he sung this ghazal....its just not a single raag, rather a combination of a few, which Mehdi Hasan only can do....may Allah give him good health. The poet is Khatir Ghaznavi, who hailed from Peshawar. The lyrics are:
Go zara si baat peh barsoo kai yaranay ga'ay
Laikin itna tu huwa kuch log tu pehchanay ga'ay
Mai issay shorat kahoon ya apni ruswa'ai kahoon

The Sangeet Natal Academy is located at the Mandi House crossing in Delhi. I was doing research to write a propial for serial on the Sufi & Sants of South Asia to be submitted to Doordarshan. This was in 1996. During that time I would sit for hours in the library on the GF of that building. Though I would pick up books but one day a staff member of the library on inquiring about the work I was dokng; informed me like books there is also a collection of Audio Tapes, Music Records and Cassettes in the library. I could not resist using that fantastic resource to cite some of the compositions of the Sufi & Sants in my proposal. Practically all national classical singers records were there. I have serious fear that by now all that from the archives would have either been destroyed or would have been sold out to private companies by those being custodians of that treasure. Same I am certain would have happened to the archives of Doordarshan and AIR.

Perhaps, it was one of the best renderings ever by the great Manna Dey Saab, an exceptional exponent of light classical songs in India. Manna Dey Saab held the great Mehdi Hassan Saab in very high esteem and was very appreciative of his ghazal " Abke Hum Bichre" in Raag Bhupali.
