I am native and still resident German and looking this footage it feels like I travelled back thru time, ended up in 1945 and witness what happened. But I'm born in 66, how can this be ? Another thing: the U.S. embassy in Vietnam had been evacuated in 1975 and all the helicopters were landing on an aircraft carrier. There had been no more space left on deck so they tossed the Hueys and Chinooks into the chinese sea. I witnessed this on TV cause my dad called me sayin' "look what's happening in Vietnam". Been my first time ever in front of a TV. BUT ! Way before that day in 75 I've seen pictures in my mind . . . me and my comrades hiding in the bushes staring at asian looking guys refueling a V 2 rocket ! The V 2 was german ! ! ! I never understood that and it keeps haunting me til now. What the f*** is goin on here on this planet ?

I traveled around a lot, but also spent a lot of time in the small town I stayed in and did local things. I got to know many of the people there.. I was like a superstar, being from California they were fascinated and wanted to hear all about what life is like here. Even though I know the WWII history, what struck me is the feeling of disbelief that USA and Germany were enemies in 2 world wars in that century. It just didn't feel real. I loved my time there and want to come back someday
I saw it for the first time about two weeks ago. Stunning piece of architecture, and remarkable to think what it's seen and survived. It's truly breathtaking and honestly a little intimidating reaching up into the night sky.
My wife and I did a cruise down the Rhine last year. The last stop before Amsterdam was Cologne, during which, we visited the magnificent cathedral. I quote from the holiday diary: "During the War, when the city was bombed 262 times and reduced to a burned-out shell the cathedral came through the horror with only 14 hits by bombs, even when the city was the target of the first 1000-bomber raid on 30 May 1942. The last raid was on 3rd March 1945 and the Americans moved in only days later. After a savage tank battle around the cathedral, the German forces retreated across the river. Chaplain Phillip Hannan, of the US Army’s 82nd Airborne, grieved over the destruction of the beautiful city that he had known and, after meeting the Archbishop of Cologne, Josef Frings, was authorised by the Archbishop to protect the cathedral. From that act, the restoration and repair of the cathedral began and, with the help of the “Monuments Men”, as many of the cathedral’s treasures as could be found were returned. The cathedral was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996." I have read that Allied bombers were told to avoid hitting significant objects, such as cathedrals but I don't know how accurate that was, given the very poor accuracy of bombing, especially at night. However, having seen Cologne Cathedral for myself, I am grateful that it survived the War. I am not religious by any means, but I have great admiration for the men who designed and built such structures. They didn't always get it right, though. Cologne Cathedral's north tower is 70 millimetres shorter than the south tower...
The Panther was destroyed in front of the Grand Cathedral by a M26 Pershing tank, then a new heavy tank for the 3rd Armored Division. The gunner was Clarence Smoyer. Before this the Panther had struck two M4 Shermans, destroying one and disabling the second. This video shows two of the Sherman crewmembers bailing out. The one that lands on the Sherman's engine block is 2nd Lt Karl Kellner. He lost a leg in the attack and bleeds to death. Realizing there was an enemy tank ahead, one of the new Pershings is called forward to deal with it. The M26 Pershing has heavier armor than the Sherman and boasts a powerful 90mm main gun. Using a parallel street the Pershing moved to flank the Panther. The German commander sensed this is what the Americans are going to do, orders his turret turned to the right. When the Pershing does appear, it's a tank the Germans had never seen before. The commander orders them to not fire, thinking it was friendly. Clarence Smoyer fires his first shot on the Panther on the run and scores a direct hit. He quickly fires two more shots. The Panther is quickly set ablaze. Some of its crew bail out. At least one, its driver, is killed. The Panther burned for three days. @7:48 Smoyer is the tanker with curly hair and no helmet. In September 2019 he received his belated Bronze Star Medal for his actions that day. He lived until 30 September 2022, passing away at the age of 99.
You have to imagine how a German tank stops an entire division! As you said, if the German commander had known that it was an American tank, he would have shot down the Pershing too. With all due respect, no army could have achieved what the outnumbered Germans had achieved. I come from Germany and everyone knows the story of the one panther who fought bravely against superior forces. There is a German saying: Honor to whom honor is due.

I have seen some suggestion (see Yarnhub's TH-cam video on the Cologne tank battle) that after knocking out the Sherman, the Panther was anticipating a threat from the cross street (their right flank) and so had their barrel turned that way but when the Pershing came into view the Panther's commander held their fire because they thought the Pershing might be a German tank. They did not recognize the shape as American. That gave the Pershing time to get off its shot and basically fry the German. I also thought I heard that the Panther sustained one fatality and it was the loader, not the driver.
@@rambo-cambo3581 Of course, I do not claim otherwise. I have not been in a situation like this and I hope I never will be. What I was referring to is that the images look very realistic with the treatment that has been given to them compared to many other footage that is available.
@@rambo-cambo3581 The difference is that it's immersive. Nobody is claiming it actually feels like being there, but the way they restored it certainly makes it feel immersive to the point where you feel the chills.
It is incredible footage restoration and upscaling. The music I have to say adds an awful melancholy to the whole piece of media and I salute the videographers then and restorers now. Looking at the destruction and comparing how it appears so very similar to the maelstrom visited on the Donbass - it seems the only difference being that today's bombs are smarter whilst we humans are sadly not.

At 6:08 you see the tank Commander climb out the turret of the Sherman and roll off the back. The Panther had just Shot that Sherman and knocked it out. The Tank Commander had his Ileft leg amputated below the knee from the shell. He died minutes later behind that Sherman. The Panther was hit minutes later by the T26E3 named "Eagle 7" and knocked out. 2 of the Panther crew died instantly. 3 crew survived. A interview with the Panther commander can be found online.
War Correspondent Andy Rooney was there and tried to render aid the the poor tank commander. Mr. Rooney mentions it in his WW ll book, 'My War', a very nice read...
Sent to die and sent to die again again war is a racket, my Pop was there deaf in one ear from artillery. Tough people. Died at 76 of a stroke. Never stopped drinking beer or smoking. Everywhere he came he said "So wheres the party". Bless his soul.

Ive never been impressed by colourisation before. There is normally very artifical red/blue hue to everything which makes me wish it was just in black and white, This, on the other hand, is astonishingly convincing. Good work.Thank you.
The guy at 2:04 with the BAR could have been my grandfather. He was a Nebraska farm kid who left school at 14 to be a hired hand at a neighbor's farm. He had hardly ever left the county until war took him away. He landed on D-Day +1 as a replacement, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
@@inreallife530 the basics are easy to find online BUT a TON of records burned in a fire a few decades ago and most of the day to day unit records were lost....some say the fire "mysteriously" started in the special forces/BLACK records section and spread if you believe those things. also BUT my buddy's records burned and he was SF, so you make your bets?

Brilliantly restored, my generation now in our 50s 60s n 70s grew up seeing this in BnW bitty grainy footage of our fathers and grandfathers and uncles who fought in ww2 but since they started to turn the film into colour in the mid 90s and smoother running frames its amazing how its more real it brings that war it to life, and now even more advanced, as said below its like someone went back in time with a modern camera and filmed it, thank you and well done .

i remember going through videos on here 10 yrs ago about the Battle of WW2, and this one was the one i'd hoped i'd see clearly, omg the Panther vs Sherman and Pershing. no contest. panther got merked!! damn, im saving this. Great video!! Special note: At 3:49 into the film, a rare image of an standard M1 Carbine sporting a milled adjustable rear sight. Very few adjustable sight configured Carbines were issued to combat zones at such a late period in the European Theatre. The overwhelming majority had the simple "flip" type sight. It really wouldn't be that uncommon by this point in the war. Many of the troops in these battles for Germany were replacements and they would have come over with the latest rifles issued in the states. Milled sights were adopted early-mid 1944. It also has an angled brass deflector lug which was adopted mid-late 1943.
"Never, was so much owed, by so many, to so very few." All these men that you see in this clip were heroes, wether they believed themselves to be or not. If anyone should have lived a long and fruitful life, it should have been them, because they are the ones that fought the hardest for it!
My grandfather was a POW in this war. Captured by Nazi soldiers in northern Italy. Got a Purple Heart and some other stuff. But I can’t tell you who won the war anymore.
Look around the Anglo-Saxon collective west in 2024. Is THIS what winning is? EVERYTHING that they warned us about has come to pass. @@planesrkool2727 I could be wrong, but I believe they drove in between a Panzer IV and a Sherman that were trading shots, and both sides hosed the car down with machine gun fire, killing both civilian occupants. Sadly, just another two victims of the war, added to the millions that preceded them.

This is very valuable work I think. When we look at old black and white war footage with a janky framerate there’s always a layer of detachment, as if we’re viewing the war as some abstract long ago event that happened to other folk. Particularly for younger generations. You can’t place yourself in the situation on screen. Seeing it like this removes many of those barriers to the viewer, it helps to bring it home that this all happened far more recently than we like to think.
Really, really amazing work, it can be clearly seen how everything has been "cleaned" by AI, colorized,. The famous duel of the Pershing tank with the Panther tank is included. The faces of the Pershing crew need no commentary. It is a pity that here in Europe we are having now another war.. shame on Putin.

Great job! I can see so many new details in this version. There is a book and documentary titled “March 1945 - Duel at the Cathedral” that provides the context, details, and personal stories of the action captured in the video. I watched the documentary on Prime. It gave me a very different perspective on this footage that I had seen many times.
Upscaling and colorizing this old footage definitely makes it more relatable. Instead of the lovely soft music though, I could get some of the original audio that was broadcast with these clips. There should be no concern about copyright, since that would long have expired. Anyway, still awesome, keep it up!!!
Excellent work !! There is a lot of other footage as well...they were shooting at that civilian car, there were two people killed. there is footage of the American medics rendering aid to the woman, the driver was killed outright. there are interviews that exist of the gunner in the American Pershing tank that fired on the car and from one of the survivors who was in the German Panther tank, who also fired on the same car from a different angle. Both Machine gunners didn't know the identity of the vehicle. Very sad..... A sister later identified (via the footage) who the woman was and why they were out in the heat of battle. (It was the burning German tank)

This is absolutely insane. I watched the Netflix doc with colorized WW2 footage, and thought it was alright, but you could totally tell the color was added in later, it didnt look natural. This looks completely seamless. It looks like it was taken by an actual color camera. I don't know if you colorized this, or if you got the footage from somewhere else, but job well done to who ever did this.

I am native and still resident German and looking this footage it feels like I travelled back thru time, ended up in 1945 and witness what happened. But I'm born in 66, how can this be ?
Another thing: the U.S. embassy in Vietnam had been evacuated in 1975 and all the helicopters were landing on an aircraft carrier. There had been no more space left on deck so they tossed the Hueys and Chinooks into the chinese sea. I witnessed this on TV cause my dad called me sayin' "look what's happening in Vietnam". Been my first time ever in front of a TV.

I traveled around a lot, but also spent a lot of time in the small town I stayed in and did local things. I got to know many of the people there.. I was like a superstar, being from California they were fascinated and wanted to hear all about what life is like here. Even though I know the WWII history, what struck me is the feeling of disbelief that USA and Germany were enemies in 2 world wars in that century. It just didn't feel real. I loved my time there and want to come back someday

Considering that Cologne was nearly wiped out by Allied bombs, it's a miracle that the cathedral survived the war.
I read that they Leads tried not to bomb this landmarks as they serve as orientation point to pilots

I saw it for the first time about two weeks ago. Stunning piece of architecture, and remarkable to think what it's seen and survived. It's truly breathtaking and honestly a little intimidating reaching up into the night sky.

My wife and I did a cruise down the Rhine last year. The last stop before Amsterdam was Cologne, during which, we visited the magnificent cathedral. I quote from the holiday diary:
"During the War, when the city was bombed 262 times and reduced to a burned-out shell the cathedral came through the horror with only 14 hits by bombs, even when the city was the target of the first 1000-bomber raid on 30 May 1942. The last raid was on 3rd March 1945 and the Americans moved in only days later. After a savage tank battle around the cathedral, the German forces retreated across the river.
Chaplain Phillip Hannan, of the US Army’s 82nd Airborne, grieved over the destruction of the beautiful city that he had known and, after meeting the Archbishop of Cologne, Josef Frings, was authorised by the Archbishop to protect the cathedral. From that act, the restoration and repair of the cathedral began and, with the help of the “Monuments Men”, as many of the cathedral’s treasures as could be found were returned. The cathedral was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996."
I have read that Allied bombers were told to avoid hitting significant objects, such as cathedrals but I don't know how accurate that was, given the very poor accuracy of bombing, especially at night. However, having seen Cologne Cathedral for myself, I am grateful that it survived the War. I am not religious by any means, but I have great admiration for the men who designed and built such structures.
They didn't always get it right, though. Cologne Cathedral's north tower is 70 millimetres shorter than the south tower...
The Panther was destroyed in front of the Grand Cathedral by a M26 Pershing tank, then a new heavy tank for the 3rd Armored Division. The gunner was Clarence Smoyer.
Before this the Panther had struck two M4 Shermans, destroying one and disabling the second. This video shows two of the Sherman crewmembers bailing out. The one that lands on the Sherman's engine block is 2nd Lt Karl Kellner. He lost a leg in the attack and bleeds to death.
Realizing there was an enemy tank ahead, one of the new Pershings is called forward to deal with it. The M26 Pershing has heavier armor than the Sherman and boasts a powerful 90mm main gun.
Using a parallel street the Pershing moved to flank the Panther. The German commander sensed this is what the Americans are going to do, orders his turret turned to the right. When the Pershing does appear, it's a tank the Germans had never seen before. The commander orders them to not fire, thinking it was friendly.
Clarence Smoyer fires his first shot on the Panther on the run and scores a direct hit. He quickly fires two more shots. The Panther is quickly set ablaze. Some of its crew bail out. At least one, its driver, is killed. The Panther burned for three days.
@7:48 Smoyer is the tanker with curly hair and no helmet. In September 2019 he received his belated Bronze Star Medal for his actions that day. He lived until 30 September 2022, passing away at the age of 99.

You have to imagine how a German tank stops an entire division! As you said, if the German commander had known that it was an American tank, he would have shot down the Pershing too. With all due respect, no army could have achieved what the outnumbered Germans had achieved. I come from Germany and everyone knows the story of the one panther who fought bravely against superior forces. There is a German saying: Honor to whom honor is due.

I have seen some suggestion (see Yarnhub's TH-cam video on the Cologne tank battle) that after knocking out the Sherman, the Panther was anticipating a threat from the cross street (their right flank) and so had their barrel turned that way but when the Pershing came into view the Panther's commander held their fire because they thought the Pershing might be a German tank. They did not recognize the shape as American. That gave the Pershing time to get off its shot and basically fry the German. I also thought I heard that the Panther sustained one fatality and it was the loader, not the driver.
The coloring and FPS add another dimension to the footage, it's almost like being there.

It is incredible footage restoration and upscaling. The music I have to say adds an awful melancholy to the whole piece of media and I salute the videographers then and restorers now.
Looking at the destruction and comparing how it appears so very similar to the maelstrom visited on the Donbass - it seems the only difference being that today's bombs are smarter whilst we humans are sadly not.

At 6:08 you see the tank Commander climb out the turret of the Sherman and roll off the back. The Panther had just Shot that Sherman and knocked it out. The Tank Commander had his Ileft leg amputated below the knee from the shell. He died minutes later behind that Sherman.

At the point in the war everyone was just hoping they could survive knowing it was almost over. Too bad the tank commander didn't make it.

@@inreallife530 the basics are easy to find online BUT a TON of records burned in a fire a few decades ago and most of the day to day unit records were lost....some say the fire "mysteriously" started in the special forces/BLACK records section and spread if you believe those things. also BUT my buddy's records burned and he was SF, so you make your bets?

Brilliantly restored, my generation now in our 50s 60s n 70s grew up seeing this in BnW bitty grainy footage of our fathers and grandfathers and uncles who fought in ww2 but since they started to turn the film into colour in the mid 90s and smoother running frames its amazing how its more real it brings that war it to life, and now even more advanced, as said below its like someone went back in time with a modern camera and filmed it, thank you and well done .

Very few adjustable sight configured Carbines were issued to combat zones at such a late period in the European Theatre. The overwhelming majority had the simple "flip" type sight. It really wouldn't be that uncommon by this point in the war. Many of the troops in these battles for Germany were replacements and they would have come over with the latest rifles issued in the states. Milled sights were adopted early-mid 1944. It also has an angled brass deflector lug which was adopted mid-late 1943.

My grandfather was a POW in this war. Captured by Nazi soldiers in northern Italy. Got a Purple Heart and some other stuff. But I can’t tell you who won the war anymore.

Very real and moving. The music added to the aftermath of war. Who watching this, would have loved to have been there? But victory is the reward for the deaths, destruction, and suffering fighting said war. Victory is sweet, but not for those poor Germans who followed orders to suicide, seeing only 2 soldiers struggling out of that tank hit by 3 anti tank shells is horrifying for those with empathy.

Only in such cases will you dare to say that you are doing God's will and complete His instructions, and only then will you dare to say that you are truly serving God. Compared to the example of Jesus, would you dare to say that you are God's neighbor? Do you dare to say that you are doing God's will? Do you dare to say that you truly serve God? Now, you do not understand how to serve God, do you dare to say that you are God's servant? If you say you serve God, aren't you dishonoring Him? THINK ABOUT it: are YOU SERVING GOD, or YOURSELF? ☀️
You serve Satan, but you stubbornly say that you serve God--in this way, are you not dishonoring God? Many people behind Me covet the blessing of status, they indulge in food, they love to sleep and carefully take care of the flesh, always fearing that there is no hope for the flesh. They do not fulfill their proper duties in the church, but take advantage of the church, or tell their brothers and sisters with My words, ruling over others from positions of authority. These people always say that they are doing God's will and always say that they are God's followers---isn't that ridiculous? ☀️
If you have the right intentions, but are unable to serve according to God's will, you are being foolish; but if your intentions are not right, and you still say that you are serving God, you are a person who opposes God, and you deserve to be punished by God!
I have no sympathy for such people! ☀️
In GOD'S HOUSE, they TAKE ADVANTAGE, always covet the comforts of the flesh, and have no regard for God's interests. They always seek what is good for them, and they do not understand God's will. They do not ACCEPT GOD'S SPIRIT'S EXAMINATION of anything they DO. They ALWAYS MANIPULATE and DECEIVE their BROTHERHOODS, and they are TWO-FACED, LIKE a FOX in the VINEYARD, ALWAYS STEALING the GRAPES and TRAMPLING the VINEYARD. 😪
Can such people be God's neighbors? Are you fit to receive God's blessings? You do not carry a burden for your life and the church, are you suitable to receive God's instruction? Who would dare trust someone like you? ☀️🙏
WHEN you are SERVING LIKE this, can GOD FAIL to ENTRUST YOU with a GREATER WORK? Won't this cause delays in the work?
I say this so that you know what conditions must be fulfilled to serve in accordance with God's will. If you do not give your heart to God, if you do not give careful care to the will of God like Jesus, God will not trust you, and will lead to JUDGMENT at the end. 🙏
Perhaps now, in your service to God, you always harbor the INTENTION of DECEIVING GOD and ALWAYS TREAT Him RASHLY. In other words, no matter what, if you CHEAT GOD, harsh JUDGMENT will COME UPON YOU. ☀️

@@planesrkool2727 I could be wrong, but I believe they drove in between a Panzer IV and a Sherman that were trading shots, and both sides hosed the car down with machine gun fire, killing both civilian occupants. Sadly, just another two victims of the war, added to the millions that preceded them.

This is very valuable work I think. When we look at old black and white war footage with a janky framerate there’s always a layer of detachment, as if we’re viewing the war as some abstract long ago event that happened to other folk. Particularly for younger generations. You can’t place yourself in the situation on screen. Seeing it like this removes many of those barriers to the viewer, it helps to bring it home that this all happened far more recently than we like to think.
Really, really amazing work, it can be clearly seen how everything has been "cleaned" by AI, colorized,. The famous duel of the Pershing tank with the Panther tank is included. The faces of the Pershing crew need no commentary. It is a pity that here in Europe we are having now another war.. shame on Putin.

Upscaling and colorizing this old footage definitely makes it more relatable. Instead of the lovely soft music though, I could get some of the original audio that was broadcast with these clips. There should be no concern about copyright, since that would long have expired. Anyway, still awesome, keep it up!!!

There is a lot of other footage as well...they were shooting at that civilian car, there were two people killed. there is footage of the American medics rendering aid to the woman, the driver was killed outright. there are interviews that exist of the gunner in the American Pershing tank that fired on the car and from one of the survivors who was in the German Panther tank, who also fired on the same car from a different angle. Both Machine gunners didn't know the identity of the vehicle. Very sad..... A sister later identified (via the footage) who the woman was and why they were out in the heat of battle. (It was the burning German tank)

This is absolutely insane. I watched the Netflix doc with colorized WW2 footage, and thought it was alright, but you could totally tell the color was added in later, it didnt look natural. This looks completely seamless. It looks like it was taken by an actual color camera. I don't know if you colorized this, or if you got the footage from somewhere else, but job well done to who ever did this.
Seen most of this footage before, but as shot. The colourisation has given it a new lease of life. Hard to believe it's 80 years ago!
