The most popular AR15 carbine today is closely associated to the U.S. Military's M4 carbine, a14.5in barreled carbine gas rifle. This did not happen by luck.
We examine the XM4, M16A2 carbine and Colt 727 styled CAR15 rifles that pre-dated the adoption of the M4, the operators behind the rifle's development and see how it shoots on our standard 500y course.
Also you'll find out why Henry hates the Call of Duty XM4. Shoutout to @KLAYCO47

26:36 Call of Duty hate - the XM4 from COD is not real. I hate it.
I can't believe I forgot to mention the M4 side sling mount was also developed under the XM4 program. I didn't have the side sling mount on this one due to the light mount, but as you can see i''ve switched it out to a more generic surefire barrel mount and will be adding the side sling mount back on.
Larry Vickers... Convicted Felon
seriously, the weapons team for COD Cold War was dogshit. horrible, nonsensical details that made no sense. they didn't even try, like at all.
I’d argue that the xm4 was in tribute to their “commando” ar that was even more out of place in the original cod blackops, being a flat top (note, for some reason completely slick top and for some reason except for the Troy BUIS on it…in the 70’s) that didn’t even make sense then, as the only flat top experiment then was the 656, and that was ENTIRELY DIFFERENT.
@@UncleSlam1776ah yes, let me get my PPSH and K31 for my ELITE SPEC OPS TEAM IN THE 1980’s.
@@baker90338Don’t forget that pseudo-G11 abomination that they added post launch
The guy on the left, in the thumb nail, is retired Delta Force Master Sgt. Paul Howe. He was in the Battle of Mogadishu and currently runs Combat Shooting and Tactics (CSAT) out in Texas. He is a fantastic instructor. It was super cool to meet him and to train at CSAT.
My dad took his basic SWAT class from him in ‘09. The nicest guy ever and yet still one of the badeest face shooters on the planet 😂
@@elisanders9105 exactly! He is has this calm, but intense, demeanor about him. You can tell that if the switch gets flipped it’s a wrap!
He’s got a TH-cam channel too! @CSAT Way on youtube
CSAT is an unfortunate name lol
@@WalrusWinkinghuh? please enlighten me. what do you mean?
The XM4/727 still remains among my favourite AR carbines.
It may not be the best, it's not the latest nor greatest
But peak aesthetics and can still get the job done, and carry handles still have a special place in my heart
Just purchased three, old school uppers with built in carry handle from Brownells. Cost around $159. Going to build two of the uppers with an 11.5" & 12.5" barrel. And throw it on two ambi lowers. Just a cool old school shorty. Before anyone gets on me regarding an "illegal" SBR. I do have my FFL: 3, 7, &10/SOT. Recently got a letter of interest from a TN Sheriffs Office....so will make the build in select fire and another one in semi auto.
Amen
Ditto ❤
It's THE vibe 😗👌🏻
I couldn't agree more! I was lucky enough to get a Colt 727 from Puerto Rican surplus and that is by far my favorite rifle. I have newer ones too(Sopmod Block 1) but you are not undermatched by much with 727. I think the xm4 era is when Colt really found its stride and imo block 2 is the ar15 at its peak
Merry Christmas, Henry & Josh!
You have such a great channel and you both are so likeable. Keep up the good work. Thank you for what you do.
Merry christmas to you too! Wishing you the best
I gotta tell you, I am LOVING the rail-add on the front sight, and that you put a tact light on it. For some reason I am SUPER excited to add that mod to my unrailed iron sighted uppers! 🍻
I searched for 723 rifle and I see a picture of orca in the thumbnail well done
I have all the parts to build out this exact rifle but I’ve been too lazy to assemble it lol. Thanks for the inspiration I may finally do it this weekend.
You’re right about the XM7, Henry
Yall have been teasing this for a while now, ive been patiently awaiting this one
Shout out from Poland, guys! Henry, the mug with the Polish national emblem is appreciated:)
The vapor trails were good on this one especially at 450/500 yards and the 😮 at 400.
Greetings from Poland! (i saw that cup Henry!), thank you guys for this great content!
Great stuff guys. I see retro definitely making a comeback. Been happy with all my H&R clones coming out of PSA
Good to know, l’ve been wondering about the “new” H&R’s.
And also what you guys forgot to mentioned is that the deference between CAR/XM4 M4 is the semi and 3round burst berceuse as you said it was based on the M16 A2, and the M4 A1 has semi and full auto as you know !
I'm a massive fan of the 733
You guys should re do the Gordon carbine test with the proper barrel length and the Allen Engineering M4 suppressor
as soon as our AE M4 comes out of jail, the rifle is already set.
The white tail on the range is hilarious
Great video. Very impressive shooting, you have some skills.
I know nothing about guns or shooting, just the same, I stand with Henry! And his cousin..........Thanks for the video.
The problem with 14.5 in Colt 721/727/727 M4 Carbines is, not the weapon system but the US Army Marksmanship Program. The Marines train to shoot bullseyes, the Army trains to shoot silhouette. If you hit all 40 targets in the left hand, as long as the plastic target gets knocked down, it is still Expert level qualification. 14,.5in with M193, M855 and especially the 77gr Mk262 are fully capable of hitting and killing out the 550m. But Big Army doesn't train that way, And yearly, I remember we were given about 10 rounds to confirm Zero. Right up to the 300m qualification course with 40 rounds, then later in the evening you got 20 or 25 rounds to "familiarization fire" at night. Twice a year. Handgun Qualification and Training were even worse. It blew minds when I shot expert using the modified Weaver stance, all they demonstrated was the Isosceles.
Thank you Chan-san for calling out the XM7, Lord do I hate that thing
I have one but it has socom 14.5 barrel.
I carried this into Afghanistan in 2001, but it was marked GAU-5P, not GUU-5P.
cherrys go on a schwarzwälder kirschtorte... last time i checked iit is a cake...
Don't under estimate short carry handle builds. I took my 10.5 xm177 clone to 400 on steel. I am not sure if I could take it to 500 with the thicker trijicon night sight on the front, but the right person probably could.
'Now we know where Henry stands...' 🤣😂😆. I have never been in less doubt about Henry's opinion on anything 😅. Nearly pi**ed myself at that one!
Love the shout out to Larry Vickers, especially at a time like this.
Maybe don't do business with enemies of the state. Just saying.
I’m running a H&R version of this. Chrome lined pencil 14.7” pinned/welded barrel. A2 carry handle with an Aimpoint Micro H2 mounted to it currently. Thinking of swapping to a 5x vortex prism as my mount allows use of the A2 sights. Weighs all of 6.5lbs with a loaded with my sling, light and Lancer magazine. The lightest and handiest of ARs
Just when I started to scold Henry for talking about "being old," he starts rambling on about "how inaccurate the XM4 is portrayed" in a video game... like an *old man* 😏
It's juuuust pixels and light, my friend. Juuuust pixels and light...
*Merry Christmas, gentlemen!* I sincerely hope nobody puts a tube of Bengay in Henry's stocking! 🌲
14.5" is the minimum length capable of mounting a bayonet with a carbine gas system.
Henry, I'll hold him, you hit him for the COD comment.🤣🥴
Well the the sling does kind of break up the outline of the rifle, maybe it's glued on there for some kind of camouflage
Do people really not stick around for the discussion? That’s my favorite part!
Henry, trash the XM7 all you want! I'm on your side with that!
Some of the delta operators would use the A1 uppers with m4 barrels as well
Great vid

Semi-related: in certain African folklore, the pig originally had a trunk like an elephant, until the spider god Anansi tricked him into sticking his trunk in a knothole. The pig couldn’t pull his trunk out of the hole, and asked Anansi to free him. And to this day, pigs have snouts instead of trunks.

Rifling Twist rate?
I think thats the first time I've 'heard' henry swear. I love it and i can understand his rage. While i tend to ignore time period inaccuracies as long as such a thing actual did or does fit on such a model of gun. Or just ignore naming as a whole at this point. I still lose it when i think of the cod vanguard campaign and its guns. Also the xm5/7 rifle sucks and makes zero sense. The mg though seems actually good could do with abit less wizz bangyness and intentional over complication to its form.
funny that the 20-inch M16 would be a carbine by WW1 standards, when Arisakas and Mosins and Gew98's had 28-30+ inch barrels, but is considered too long now.
Yeah a lot has changed since the 1890's. Most infantry now days ride into battle on vehicles.
They also didn't bring their rifles when raiding trenches because they were too long. Nowadays we don't club combatants to death with shovels so we gotta bring a shorter rifle into combat

Consistent hits at 500 yards with 55 grain ball & open sights..incredible 👌
I carry this during my national service in late 90s. It's pretty accurate with iron sight at 500m.
It's not open sights when the rear sight is ring-shaped.
@@randomnobodovsky3692regardless, irons in whatever form out to 500 is impressive
The 10” CAR-15 XM177 gives me a special feeling. I really wish I could have one, but I’m stuck in California for now, so no SBRs here. Someday…
Yea, the XM177 is sorta my fav as well, probably one too many 80’s action movies for me.
@FURTIVEGESTURES Don't be Goofy 😂
I am not a fan of a 10 inch barrel without a true suppressor. Moderators don't cut it.
You can always go with 10½" barrel and pinned and welded 5½" flash hider/ muzzle brake.
Oof. I got a colt xm177E2 with 12.7” barrel
Henry's flashlight mount reminds me of one setup a few guys I knew had for MOUT/CQB in the early 1990s. There was a sergeant I knew who was taking beat up M7 bayonets, cutting off the blade and trimming the guard opposite the muzzle ring, and making a mount that would take a MiniMag flashlight - the idea being that the unit attaching like a bayonet meant you could pop it on or off as needed. The onky reason i didnt get one myself was i was too cheap to pay the $50 or so he charged.
50 dollars then was pretty money, but still... That non buyer's remorse has gotta bite.
Hey, why not make your own version now? 3D prints and machined aluminum.
Love that these older interim rifles are getting the attention they deserve. Thank you for this video!
On the rant at the end, I refuse to use something in a game if it is janky and inaccurate to what its supposed to be (looking at you every developer who removed the front sight of a MP5/G3/UMP/M16) because I get distracted by how annoyed I am at it. Even if its the meta weapon of the day, I can't do it.
Is it petty? Probably, it is just a game.
Am I alone? I bloody well hope not!
*Insert Jonathon Ferguson dying inside face here* - Dylan
I miss seeing your videos!
Im absolutely the same! Mw3 I so want to use my M16, but the acog mounts all the way at the front of the reciever and it drives me bonkers!
God bless the milsim explosion for bringing realistic gun depictions back into the spotlight in gaming. Some of those early Battlefield/CoD depictions were atrocious (and nowadays god knows what CoD does with their guns. Poor Vector and P90)
I didn't use the MP5 in the new Resident Evil game purely because it doesn't have sights on the model. I'm that autistic.
Amen! I insisted on playing BF1 with a scopeless Lee-Enfield :D
Carry handle uppers are a vibe. I Love my colt 6520.
Id give you crap for buying a name, but then I remember I have Hk's 😅
Everything you want in a patrol rifle and nothing you don't, love mine.
It's fkn great isn't it? I got a law enforcement trade in out of New York. It had wear from being in the rack but has barely seen rounds. It has the big surefire 500 handguards on it, I guess swat or some of then guys put that on there. I kinda like it just to give it that old swat vibe but I might just go back to the original handguards. The prices on these are steadily climbing and will continue to do so. Great rifle
Over 60 years later and Eugene's rifle is still the best rifle since the Garand. I love my AR's.
30 year old me realizing even the m16 in black ops was a flat top when equipped with a red dot: REEEEEEE
Oh....there he is....we have a bone to pick with you...
The flat top upper was first somewhat standardized by the Canadian C7A1 rifle and C8A2 Carbine, via a 14 slot weaver rail that is not the same as the standard 1913 pic rail uppers that we have now. The Canadian Armed Forces adopted the C7A1 equipped with the Elcan C79 optic for regular troop use in the early 90s, predating the widespread adoption of the M4 and M4A1 carbines and M16A4 rifles.
I used a brand new M16a4 in Iraq in 2004. We had used old beat up M16A2's in Iraq in 2003. I did some training with the Canadians in the UK in 2005. I remember looking at their rifles and thinking, "why didn't we just adopt the C7?" It was lighter, collapsible stock, flat top with an optic and a short rail at the front of the handguard to mount a light. The weight felt about half that of an M16A4. The C7 was what I wanted the M16a4 to be. That was my first exposure to Colt Canada, I was jealous.
@@LDB670 that was the C7A2, which is exactly as you described. It's the rifle I'm used to as a currently serving CAF infanteer. I really think the idea of a 20 inch rifle upper with a carbine lower w/ H2 weighed buffer is among the most optimal setups for a AR-15 type rifle in 5.56.
I live about 30 minutes from Diemaco/Colt Canada.
Same as Holland. We adopted the Diemaco C8A1 (m4 type rifle with Elcan C79 optic) in 1994.
C7/C8 have cold hammer forged barrels instead of button rifled also. A plus in my opinion
Over the past 30 years I've owned the
Colt SP-1 Lightweight carbine
Colt AR-15A2 Carbine
XM-177E2 11½" pinned and welded
M-4A1 forgery SOPMOD BLOCK 1
M4A1 Lightweight SOPMOD BLOCK 1
M4A1 SOPMOD Block 2 with SOCOM barrel
GAU-5 11½" pinned and welded
And all of these carbines are really surprising for their accuracy and Lightweight handling capabilities.
The GAU-5 is my favorite of them all.
Great video guys! Keep up the great work.
21:33 CAR-15 originally was a abbreviation for "Colt Automatic Rifle" and included several weapons derived from the AR-15 including also a survival rifle (Model 608) and a LMG called Colt HBAR-1 (Model 611).
I was always told it was for carbine
A shootout too
Armalite is what AR means
Just a couple hours ago I've been telling my folks about blood diamond and they drop this:
You should be using m855, it performs much better past 300m. The old accuracy issues are long gone as long as you stick with quality Norma ss109 or actual M855 not XM855. Norma 69gr flies similar to m855 and should be used as a better substitute than 55gr m193.
Seriously! Why does he do this? Don’t skimp on the ammo.
I could be wrong but I don't think they use M855 on the channel because of the ranges rules against the steel penetrator and the life of the steel targets? @@THEENaners247
I wish they would try it with M855 as well though
@@gregoryedwards9790That's accurate. No green tips allowed on steel.
@@9HoleReviews then use 69gr like the army marksmanship unit. I use it on steel and it has the exact same DOPE as M855. 55gr wind characteristics are crap past 300 out of the shorter barrels.
We want more Henry rants on the XM7 and COD!
20" meat chopper requires a bit more strength, dexterity and spatial awareness, true enough. However the terminal performance advantage at close range, particularly with military ball ammunition, is pretty significant as we are talking about a velocity based cartridge. That also translates to soft point and ballistic tip ammunition, increasing its maximum terminal performance range within that 150-300 likely max engagement distance, its not all about cheating wind at 400 plus... im not doing helo insertions or mechaised operations (even though Rangers managed just fine?) im walking in the woods or holding down a angle in my house... take a page out of Canada's book for a modern 20" look at the C7. A 20" AR15 with collapsed stock is the same length as a fixed stock 16" AKM.
Ranger were also using carbines
“Well that combat sight works” lol
It's to bad we couldn't get larry vickers opinion on this for this channel specifically.
In original documents, this was the M4. but it rapidly was changed to a flat top, still called the M4, but the upper receiver was what we all recognize now. It was a burst weapon, and the M4A1 designation reflected a change back to safe/semi/full. Another nickname for this gun was the Aby Dhabi carbine, as apparently a special batch was built and sold to Saudi Arabia early on in the gun's genesis. I actually built one of these awhile back with a SOCOM barrel and a LMG upper with no forward assist. Sorry now I parted it out...
The Colt 723 Abu Dhabi carbines are sold to UAE. Abu Dhabi being the capital of UAE.
I'll agree the A2 sights are what made the difference. The Model 723 I got to tote around at times still had the A1 sights and was a bear to hit reliably out past 200 meters. I enjoyed carrying it but just because it was different. Cheers
It's even funnier hearing Henry's rant on Cod Black Ops Cold War's XM4 because they changed it for the new Black Ops 6 to look more like a proper XM4
that's really good. thanks for that update!
@@9HoleReviews Don't worry. They still saw off the carry handle and use a pic rail when you put optics on it
Punished Ferguson and Angered Henry about call of duty depictions of firearms now.

Great content as always! Also, I feel better about life now knowing that Henry hates the XM7.
Carry Handle is best handle. 20" FTW.
I remember when I was a little boy in the early ‘70’s watching footage of Green Berets with Colt Commandos XM177 down in the weeds.
Henry, oddly enough there were several "XM-4's floating around in other A.D. units in the 90s, not many but several here and there. MTO for RTO's and in a few Bradley units for crew AKA PSG's and P.L. Unfortunately some upper leadership (BN, BDE or DIV) wouldn't allow them to be used because of the "stuck in uniformity" B.S. of everything has to be the same.
A few different places I had access to and used some different than standard "M16a1/ M16a2" rifles, including XM177e2 that was good as a it could be for a young infantryman in the 80s.
Oh yes, you mentioned the XM4 from Cold war which I have never played. This brings me back to 2014/2015 when at an airsoft field I had some young kids ask me if my M16A4 w/ carry handle was the Commando from Black Ops. Another bastardized flat top AR before they were even a thing.
Ngl, I always thought it was pretty cool even if it was weird they had a prototype Canadian carbine. I cloned it for my autism from the game

727 is peak. The 653 was the Model that introduced me to the CAR-15 Series. If I'm making a clone, I'd lean towards the 653, but If I have liberty in customization, flat top and flip-up front sights -May as well get an M4 then, right? True, but I want it in a 653 aesthetic while doing so.

ALL of my first rifle/carbines were fixed carry handle, even my select fire SWAT M4. I even had a Colt Match HBAR that was fixed.
I have a "Heinz 57" XM-4 build. It's the rifle I grab when I want a rifle, but don't think I'll need a rifle. It's a very light and handy package with capable sights.

I can't comment on the performance of these rifles (maybe one day I'll be able to visit the US and have one hell of a range day), but to me there's something special about the transitional eras of firearms development (the 20s and 50s as well, but the late 80s to 90s especially) and what came out of them, and it's real cool seeing stuff like this and the M16A2 in action. The perfect mix of form and function. Definitely seems like the retro stuff's regaining popularity in the US nowadays.
