    Thank you for sharing with us! I love watching gardening videos and seeing the different gardens around the world. A short story about sharing one's garden bounty.
    I was a rural mail carrier for 30 years and one year a customer that I have known for twenty of those years, gave me several large clumps of irises. I had gone back at the end of the work day to pick them up and she even took the time to demonstrate how to divide them. She was a wonderful woman, with one of the most beautiful cottage gardens I have ever seen. She had some beautiful heirloom varieties of flowers I have never seen before except in books. She shared her knowledge and she became a surrogate mom to me, especially after my mother passed away. She taught me about collecting the seeds every fall and about keeping a ledger or journal of the garden. As she got older, I would go by whenever I could to help her (she had no children of her own), but she was still out in the garden up until the day she died. She passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 101.
    I was stunned to be called to her lawyer's office soon after the funeral. She had left me part of her estate, the contents of her garden shed, and any plants I wanted from her garden. The
    shed was meticulously kept and well organized with a potting table in front of a wall of windows at the front and a small desk at the back. She even kept a rocking chair with a floor lamp next to it in there. She taught me the importance of cleaning, sharpening, and oiling your garden tools each fall so they would not rust over winter. (They sure don't make tools like these anymore). Many of the gardening tools she used were her mother's and kept them looking new, so they will be left to my family when I pass.
    I had just recently bought my first house and could not afford to buy the proper tools and plants to start my cottage garden. This was her gift to help me get started with my garden. The bulk of her estate went to the local garden club and the nature preserve she established when she was a younger woman. They will have enough money to keep them going for decades to come! Today, I have successfully established a cottage garden, and every year I watch those rare heirloom flowers bloom or the orange irises unfurl, I think of her. What a wonderful, generous woman and gardener she was.

      Oh Hon, this is a precious beautiful story about a beautiful little lady, she's in Heaven looking down at your beautiful cottage garden just a smiling. She taught and gave you so much. This would make a beautiful little movie. A mail carrier and a little lady that had a beautiful soul, knowledge and a precious beautiful cottage garden that lived til she was 101. ❤❤❤❤❤

    Want to hear something funny? We have a new home on about 1.5 acres. The land was cleared before my home was built, and it was nothing but a field littered with garbage and such beforehand. Very unkempt. I have not planted a single thing besides a few trees but I noticed irises popping up under one tree, a sweet gum tree, in our yard! I couldn't believe it. Where did they come from?! No idea. But I am loving having them. I plan to add more iris bulbs in the spring. They have not bloomed as of yet. Just noticed them about two months ago here in North Central Texas, USA. They are short leaves still, about five or six inches, some a little taller, some a little shorter. We have very compacted clay here so I'm not sure how they grew without any amendment to the soil, nor without someone planting them. My guess is some squirrels or rabbits got into someone's iris bulbs and dropped them off here, maybe? That's my best guess but I'll never know for sure. Your irises are lovely! The purple is so stunning.

      That's such a wonderful story. Congratulations on the new hone. I've had some grow in clay soil too. I would plant some more next August or September and please thin out the one you already have at that time if they don't bloom next Spring. Here's a step by step guide. Enjoy your new home. 🏡 😊

      Some Irises actually do quite well in our Texas soil, they’re called “clay busters”. Sow coneflower and black eyed Susan seeds in with them, they will all work to break up the soil. Add cow manure to the top soil every year and soon enough, you’ll have a loamy soil in that area.

    Your irises are absolutely gorgeous! 😍 My son brought home a wagon full of irises a few years back that a neighbor had discarded. It took 2 years after planting before I got to see their blooms, an iridescent white! So pretty and with a rootbeer fragrance, my first irises and totally worth the wait. ❤ Thank you for the tips! Now, I won't worry if the rhizomes are peeking out, the ones I keep re-burying are the only ones not blooming.

    I enjoyed your video. In my small, very sunny front garden, I have the common blue irises plus large, tall two-colour irises that start blooming when the common ones are done. These large ones are white with dark purple edges. People come close up to take photos of them as they walk by my house. I've had both varieties in the same bed for about 10 years, where they got too overcrowded. I dug them all out and selected only the best and healthiest looking ones, with good roots, that had never bloomed and I divided them. I had so many, that I was able to share lots with 4 other people. I mixed some bone meal into the soil and re-planted them in the same bed, nicely spaced out. For the next two years, I did not have a single bloom, until this year. Even though I continued doing everything as before, it seems that they just needed their two years to recover. I kept checking with the other 4 people and their experience was exactly the same. We all have lots of beautiful blooms this year.

    I live in Mississippi. We often don’t get enough really cold weather for bulbs and rhizomes to bloom well. I was hoping this video would contain info on fertilizers which might help get blooms even with a lack of the super cold temps. We had some very cold weather this past winter, and I have been amazed at how abundantly all my plants have flowered this spring.

    • @MarlenesHomeandGarden
      @MarlenesHomeandGarden  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Judy I'm so sorry you didn't get blooms. Honestly I never feed mine because once it gets a reasonable bit of Winter cold and the other things I listed are in place they will bloom. You can try adding some bulb food in the Fall or Spring to see if that helps. It's a similar situation to get daffodils and tulips to bloom in warmer climates. I hope you get some success in the near future. Take care. 🌸

    I’m not quite sure how I got to your video, but the information was very useful. I moved in my house about 25 years ago. I had never grown an Iris in my life. I had a co-worker who loved them and had to separate hers. She asked if I would like some. I said, sure but they may not live at my house because I don’t have full sun anywhere. However, I figured they’re free so what do you have to lose? She loves purple so she gave me a box of Irises from deep dark purple to purple and white, lavender etc. I alternated them along the side of my house. The next year I had the most spectacular display of Irises. I feel in love with them and over the years have collected many other colors. I still have all the purple ones and have shared them with many other people. I just wanted to say, although I don’t have any full sun at my house, they’re do just fine. What I fine is they don’t seem to multiply as fast but they bloom just fine. One other thing, if you are in the habit of mulching every year, you may not want to do that with Irises. That will surly stop them from blooming if the rhizomes get buried under Al that mulch. I don’t mulch.

    • @MarlenesHomeandGarden
      @MarlenesHomeandGarden  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sounds lovely, purple shades and white. I don't encourage mulching very much because it makes them susceptible to root rot and leaf borers. We love using a single layer of river pebbles. Thanks for sharing your story and welcome to my channel. 😊 🌸 🌿

    Your voice is so soft and calming. I loved the video. I wush i could grow Iris. Our climate is extremely rainy and wet with high air humidity and cold temperatutes even in summer and heavy clay soil. I guess they will sit there and rot. Dutch iris are doing somewhat well but they bloom only once in spring for me not both in spring and fall. There is this endemic very miniature iris to balkan peninsula country. It looks the same but 10 times smaller. I have so fond memories of them blooming in the woods.

      Sorry to hear. I did explain that a light dressing of mulch is good in the colder months but need to be removed in the Spring. Especially if in a very cold zone. Otherwise they will get leaf boarers. This can cause great harm to them. Best wishes.

      Sounds like they do need staking or a trellis which is a bit challenging because of the roots (rhizomes) being so large. If you able to, that would be great. I must say I have never experienced that before maybe because mine are next to walls or fences. They last for 2 days as cut flowers indoors. Best wishes with your decision. 🌸

      I have found that too much fertilizer too close to bloom can make the stalks overly tall and weak. I usually overdo the fertilizer, so I found that out the hard way!

    I used to grow tall bearded irises back when I lived in Pennsylvania. But now l been living in Florida for 10 years and during that whole time I haven't been able to get them to grow here. And I was wondering if you have any idea as to why that might be?

    I just was clearing out a section where most of my irises are located - (very recently new gardener - and I uncovered bunches of over crowded ryzones that I have now gently removed - is there anything I can put them in to revive them - our season for irises is almost over and I found this clump as I was removing dead leaves -

      Sorry to hear that. That sounds so strange. Are there pests or diseases showing on the plants or nearby soil. I find that for fungus, a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution sprayed on during a cool morning helps. Also, sick foliage needs to be removed, and shears disinfected. Best wishes.

    • @MarlenesHomeandGarden

      You can in a very large Container but the blooms only last for about 3 weeks in total. They are quite big and beautiful. It's best to enjoy them in flower beds and use containers for plants that blooms for months. Plant Sept or Oct in a sunny spot. Blessings. ❤

    My iris bloomed but turned white in stead of the lavender color. And my peonies turned yellow instead of pink. Is this a soil issue. If so what do I add and how much?

    • @MarlenesHomeandGarden
      @MarlenesHomeandGarden  ปีที่แล้ว

      If the leaves and flowers are healthy it may not a nutrient deficiency but variation in the plant. In which case enjoy them. If you are able to I would try getting the soil tested for pH level etc. I did get a healthy white Iris last year though. Good luck with your flowers.

    • @MarlenesHomeandGarden
      @MarlenesHomeandGarden  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You may just need to back off watering for a few days. Plants have a great way of recovering. Hopefully it's not some kind of blight or leaf borer disease. In which case you would need to remove the bad ones and the soil immediately surrounding.

    There're two primary reasons Iris do not bloom.
    The corm should never be planted, rather laid into a shallow trench with the top of the corms exposed to the Sun,
    and Iris do NOT like to be crowded and will not bloom if not divided every 2-3 years.
