- “How should I cut my natural hair?”
This week we have Carline Dargenson of InStyl Haircare out of Brooklyn, NY joining us to chat about cutting your natural hair.
So much conversation has come up about cutting natural hair and we thought it would be cool to chat with an industry veteran who’s made space in her salon to address the clients she partners with.
This conversation isn’t about this hair cut vs that one…it’s about helping you all to make decisions that align with what makes you feel comfortable and what aligns with how you want to show up in the world.

Carline is fabulous!!! I’ve been going to her for a few years and she’s not only a vibe, but an educator and an advocate for black hair and will keep it REAL! Sending love to all our black girls with curls !!!
This is a top notch conversation! You brought much to the table today! I love that you talk about technique and not be afraid to lose length in order to gain it. It takes time and our hair will grow!
I also loved how Carline talked about the relationship and partnering!
You ladies are young so you don’t remember the Vidal Sassoon cuts of the 60’s but as stylist you might’ve heard about them. My grandma said nothing is new and almost every trend comes back. I’m 73 and she very seen it
I’ve been going to Carline for about 2 to 3 years! She listens to her clients wants and guides them in the right direction! I got my cut and then my color once approved and my hair is flourishing!!
Omg this made me even more excited for my cut this week from a curly cut stylist 😍 I have the baby crown situation that used to be a taper cut and it’s in so much need of a shape and I am looking forward to being cute again and thankfully I love long hair but I don’t have that attachment to it where I’ll sacrifice CUTE and most importantly HEALTH. Wish I could post in see some curls but can I email the after pics or dm them to you on ig Aisha? TY for this!!
Awesome! We love that you have some insight going into your upcoming appointment.
Great conversation Aishia!
My stylist told me the same thing about the shape I wanted required shorter hair in the back but I actually love my hair the way it is.
Carline is a true gem!!! ❤
Thank you Aishia and Carline
New York was definitely the epicenter for it, Chicago was slow to embrace the concept (Southside first and the Westside still struggles with it). I think it may have more to do with the rich diversity of the boroughs of NY.
I was going to the salon before and after the pandemic, so when I went natural (last relaxer 11/16/2012 I was at the salon but I was wearing my hair straight (blow dried & flat ironed) until 2018 my first Curly Cut (Deva cut).
Great conversation. I love Carline!
She’s so sweet and warm!
That's my hairstylist ❤
Thanks for this discussion! It helped me to come to terms with wanting to be a silk press natural for a little bit. I felt like I was doing something wrong by not wanting to wear my hair curly (at least for now).
I wore my hair in an Afro for part of the 90’s but relaxed again.
My lifestyle is a wash and go style no plans to ever straighten it or twist it. I feel gorgeous with my natural hair wash and go.
Now you're talking shop (1:06 and on)! I'm here for it!
Good Convo, Carline reminds me of the Actress Tamara Taylor they could be sisters!
