Caroline Kennedy on the Art of Diplomacy

Amb. Caroline Kennedy joined the Institute of Politics for a conversation of the art of diplomacy. Ms. Kennedy discussed her work as a former U.S. Ambassador to Japan from 2013-2017, her career in public service, and the current diplomatic challenges facing the United States. This conversation was moderated by Ivo H. Daalder, president of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and former U.S. Ambassador to NATO.

What a brilliant choice by President Obama to send Caroline Kennedy as Ambassador to Japan. Her humility and comportment has served the Kennedy legacy well.

What an informative interview. Highlights two other areas (in a negative way): Firstly, just how sadly lacking are our news broadcasts (cable and others) which have largely become partisan shouting matches of tedious, rehearsed talking points. Secondly, whatever you think of him and his politics, just how embarrassingly lacking Trump is in comparison to those who quietly and sanely carry on a fact filled discourse in an adult manner. Didn't history promise us a Kennedy ad infinitum?

Believe it or not, no. That has come up on occasion when folks think they are being polite, but Caroline herself has pointed out that she never changed her name on marriage. My own guess is that she simply knew people would call her "Caroline Kennedy" anyway, so why bother?
