  • British rock band Coldplay’s coming tour of India has triggered a police investigation and dismayed fans after scalpers bought up cheap tickets to resell online for more than Rs 10 lakh a piece. What does the law say about black marketing of tickets in India? Faye D’Souza speaks to lawyer Priyanka Khimani and Roshan Abbas.

    Roshan's argument is - blame the affected and give a rosy picture of what we might get in the future, dekho abhi chori hone do, baad me sab theek hoga, aur artist layenge and aur chori hoga and if someone calls it out, it's people shouting sour grapes..!!
    Bravo!!

    The most tone deaf argument by both the guest..all the more reason to have check for these kind of concerts..getting the artist isn't the only goal, checking illegal activities like black marketing should be important..

      How? Any suggestions?

    • @ashishchandola2716
      @ashishchandola2716 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@nikhilagarwal5295 well if it comes to that, i believe any other sale platform other than the original organisers should be prohibited to sell the tickets, no resale should be allowed but I think that's already in place, phased ticketing, tickets linked to a permanent ID while making a purchase, proper IT infrastructure arrangement by the seller to handle traffic in millions, etc. comes to mind..
      We can also learn from the models used by other Asian countries with a large number of buyers and implement what fits us too..

      @@ashishchandola2716 Re selling on other platforms as you said has been prohibited. Phased ticketing will create more and give people more chances to get tickets twice rather than two different persons getting tickets. As per your suggestion about ID check, I don't think any country in the world will allow private companies to store IDs.

    • @ashishchandola2716
      @ashishchandola2716 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@nikhilagarwal5295 True, this will take some dedicated efforts to figure out what works for us. Since we are eliminating reselling, people buying more and more in various phases will make sense if they do need the tickets, if it can't be black marketed, I see no point buying tickets just for the sake of it.
      As for storing the ID's that will not be required for more than authentication purpose at the point of sale, I'm not a techie, well I am a tiny bit, but I believe there would be a way to generate encrypted tokens, banks do it as well. I live in the EU and sell and purchase of some of the commodities is controlled by national Ids, don't have a lot of information on how this is implemented here but something we can try to figure..
      Again, i don't live in India currently so I can't judge the sentiment too well, but I'm sure theft and blackmarketing to a certain degree can be prevented.
      Maybe setting a limit to how high the prices can be on platforms other than the primary organisers websites could be a way? So a 5k ticket can't go for over 10k maybe, toh agar chori ko promote karna he hai toh at least pocket pe pressure he thoda kam ho 😂

    Whatever Roshan and Priyanka say, BMS failed to cater. Technology only fails when it is not utilized properly. BMS should find a proper procedure which is fair and equal for all consumers.

  • @TheYatmon
    @TheYatmon 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

    Roshan, it is untrue. Till 1997, we had the biggest artists coming to Bangalore. It was after various bomb blasts in Mumbai that the cops came down hard and said they could not regulate such large crowds and made it difficult to get permission for large live shows.

  • @prabuud
    @prabuud 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +8

    Is there any point of a discussion with all three members supporting only one side (BMS) of the story? 🤔

  • @stormshadow2012

    You want a simple solution, make the Ticket Sale list public...period. One would be naive to think that BMS did not backdoor tickets, how else would a large number of tickets appear on sites like viagogo? I have no issues with resellers at an individual level as you gotta appreciate the hustle but this was outright robbery which could not have been possible without tickets being siphoned off. Roshan talks like the year is 2004, get real man, having 100 million traffic is quite common on major platforms and if BMS did not anticipate this proves that the people working there need to be fired and replaced with people who know the pulse. Nevertheless, I hope the investigation does happen and there can be some sense made of this whole facade.
    Edit : Forgot to comment on the absurdity of Priyanka's comments, good God why couldn't you just place the placard in front of Roshan and Priyanka saying that they are spokesperson of BMS and Faye, thank you for not asking questions but just nodding ahead in affirmation.

    I humbly disagree with Roshan on limitation of technology in creating the disappointment. The ticket buyer and public should understand. No buddy, this should not be the case. Due to probability of high demands, such ticketing platforms are setup on clouds which can scale-out when there is high demand and scale-in when there is low demand. Flipkart and Amazon learnt their lesson after their first big billion and great sale. Now their platform accommodate the high demand. Online cricket and football matches manage the demand flawlessly. Book my show should have been aware of high demand especially after Diljit show went full in 15 min. Let’s stop blaming public for being fan and wanting to be part of it….

    Roshan telling Coldplay fans to stop crying and support a local artist is just the biggest slap in the face to music fans in India, and it makes me question what he knows about being a fan and appreciating an art form. I'm pretty sure that most people who enjoy big shows like Coldplay also spend their time and money on smaller, local concerts, because that is a 'core behaviour' of someone who loves music. Second of all, even if someone doesn't do that, who is he to lecture them? If Coldplay is a band I love, and I don't really listen to much else, why should I spend my hard earned money just to "support" someone whose music I don't like? I heard a similar comment on a Newslaundry podcast where the host was surprised that 5 lakh people in India actually want to go and watch Coldplay.
    When I log on to book my show to get a ticket for a concert at the listed price, it ALREADY means I am invested in the live music scene. Any explanations being given on behalf of BMS by both guests are just cop-outs. We are already willing to pay the money - so it is the job of event people and everyone else to not cheat customers out of a potentially once-in-a-lifetime experience. We do NOT need a lecture on how logistics works in the live music scene, we already know how much hard work it takes to organize an event - but that's the last thing on our mind when trying to book tickets. This should be common sense.

    Why isn't the same logic used while selling flight tickets. It cannot be reused by any other person except the one who bought it. Every ticket should have the name and adhar number of the buyer. Alternately, in the future these concerts can pull international tourism too. Coldplay concert including holiday in India. Like Roshan said there are opportunities to create many more jobs for India.

    You did not bring people who lived at the moment. This conversation was biased. I was so angry at Roshan laughing at Coldplay retiring, he doesn't know the sentiment of real fans. This video was not necessary, if you wanted to really talk about the issue you should've gotten people with different perspectives.
    I love you Faye and have followed you for a long time but this video was very biased.

    If our Coldplay fans were this passionate about the number of crashes on the voter registration website or how long it takes for some government websites to load, then we would be living in a very different country.

    Both guests are completely unaware of the actual issue, that happnened.. and are talking economics of the events.. which is not relevant to the actual issues... The main issue is.. How does the reseller have so many tickets to sell at 5 X or 10 X price at the same time BMS tickets went live?? while the whole world was in queue .

    I don’t understand the outrage. I stay in Ireland and Coldplay announced 2 shows in Dublin. Ticketmaster sells tickets in Europe. I was 100000 in queue. Waited 2 hours and then subsequently Coldplay announced a 3rd show, followed by 4th and then 5th. It took me 6 hours to get 2 tickets for the final 5th show. It was an ordeal, but that’s okay, I understand that demand outstrips supply. I got into a Manutd ticket sale on their official
    Site and their website behaved like irctc that my page crashed when I was about to make payment. That’s okay. Heavens don’t fall. Ot everything is corruption .

    While I like listening to Roshan Abbas, having him here was a conflict of interest. He is literally from the event industry. He can never have a non biased opinion, it’s literally his livelihood.

      @@shashankakella5104 maybe look up the meaning of Conflict of interest, there’s usually a lack of ‘perspectives’ in scenarios where it gets food to your table and gets you to be in a position to consider Taylor Swift tickets for 2.5 lacs for your kids.
      Roshan can do whatever he chooses to, this is to make you understand, there can be biased perspectives, especially for those who have skin in the game.
