Sooo helpful!! I thought my guy was either dumb or untrainable!! I watch others play fetch with envy... but we do have fun playing catch inside the home. When he's proud of his catch and feeling playful, he'll come back to me with a giant smile, but then hide to "eat" his ball or toy. Definitely doesn't like to share!

For me it was the same thing with my Old English Sheepdog. He would follow the tennis ball as it was rolling but when it stopped he would just walk away. He would chase and bark at RC cars but fetch was beyond him. He was lovable but can't say that he was dumb as a rock because he would sometimes be outwitted by a rock. I miss him.

We kept Ridgebacks from 1980 - 2018 when we lost our last one. Ridgebacks don't fetch, we had a Lab for that. Ridgebacks are sighthounds, show them a hare or a deer and watch them go. Obviously ours never caught one, but got some serious exercise in the process.

My ridgeback (Indy) was not into playing fetch with a ball but one day we came across a soft frisbee and he LOVES playing fetch with it. he has gotten so great at it that he catches it while its still in the air all the time now. everyone who sees him doing it is so impressed by how fast he is!

I have a part ridgeback part catahoula that I adopted from a rescue. She actually likes catching frisbees. She will sort of bring them back. Normally gets them within about 15 feet before dropping them and making me go get them. She also loves tug of war. A really smart dog. My family has owned dogs my whole life, but this one and my last one were both rescues. I may be imagining it but both seem smarter than most of my purebreds.

haha I laughed SO hard watching this as my Rhodesian sleeps lazily on the couch beside me. Luka is clumsy to the fullest regard until it's time to play with his best friend and neighbor dog, Bowser-- he's quick and majestic. But fetch, is.not.happening and this video truly speaks to what it looks like when Luka is tossed ANYTHING to fetch. He actually turns to jello and flops all over the place; all 100+lbs of him. I love your videos and blog!! I've come to reference your products you recommend quite a bit, and without fail, they've come in handy when we adopted Luka and had little to no experience with Ridgies. He's my greatest research study, and my very best friend.

All true. So imagine our surprise Will when our ridgie Archer,at about a year old decided that he loved fetch! We couldn’t believe it,but he really took to the command “bring it back” and would happily fetch a favourite soft toy for a solid 10 mins at a time. He’s nearly 5 now and sometimes will still consent to a brief game if l ask and if he’s in the mood 😆

My first dog was a Ridgeback and he could catch anything. Especially food. When HE wanted to play fetch he would bring it back. Balls, Sticks and sometimes frisbees. Ridgebacks were originally bred from African hunting dogs and a mix of European breeds.

Yes a mix of many breeds over time said to include khoikhoi, Danes, pointers, large terrier breeds, greyhound, etc. They were not bred from vizslas as stated

Most people I’ve met don’t know their breed, but I always try to learn as many breeds as I can. Dogology is my favorite field of study-just for fun. However, I have three Shelties. Their main qualities are being blabber mouths-if you call that a quality. Lol. Love ‘em all!

I find too, asking my ridgeback to sit, or laying down on command, she knows and will do It, but say not like my Golden Retriever I had, whom loved to obey every command, my ridgeback will after 3 times go like nah, I've sat/laid down perfectly every time you asked, you know I can do It, what's the purpose of this? 😂😂😂 I'm thrilled I came across this video ❤❤❤

Hey man just a quick question. Do you recommend neutering your male ridgebacks? We were speaking to the vets and he's not going to be used for breeding but we don't want to lose his character but we don't know if it will or not. If you could reply even with just a brief reason why/why not to that would be fantastic. Love your videos by the way and your dogs are gorgeous!
