Recently Oda revealed the Luffys devil fruit isn’t the rubber fruit but the rubber hose fruit instead meaning he can behave like an old rubberhose popeye style character. Also totally agree that it’s a hyper underrated power :)
8:40 The directions to the factory of Supernatural Lollipops Inc.? "The Unknown" was ACG's company-wide term for a sort-of-Limbo afterlife where dead folks go and supernatural stuff sometimes comes from. They used it pretty consistently in their other books and non-Herbie stories. So he pretty much gets his lollipops from three miles west of Heaven, which probably explains why the factory worker has angel wings.
Listening to this, I was reminded of my favorite comic book character Flaming Carrot. Then you mentioned the crossover. I must have missed when they were together.
One part of herbie that confuses me is who owns the copyright, since the company went defunct in 1967, its possible that herbie is public domain (though i wouldn't use the character without solid proof)
All you need to do to understand and to enjoy this comic is two things, 1: a suspension of and in disbelief and 2: a child like mind, imagination, and sense of innocence because this character and these stories are from a time before comic books became so serious and before people started taking them way too seriously. So in conclusion just accept and take these comics and it's main character for what it is for the sake of fun and joy because that's what they're for. P.s in my opinion the modern world needs more comics and more characters like this so the comic book industry and other readers can lighten up and maybe more comics like these can bring both love and fun back into comic books so comic books can be great again.
The modern world is a vile place at the moment, due to world leaders woke far left agendas. It's in every day life, tv, movies. I'm staying in the 60s decade, it was fun, safe, and had freedom of speech.
@@raymondlang That's true 👍😄, however I was told by some of my elders that the 60s and 70s is when and where the ideas 💡 of the extreme left is where it started, but then again the 60s must feel safer to you because that's probably where you were younger, just like how I was born in 1992 and how I sometimes wish I could go back to the 90s and stay there where feels safe to me.
Herbie has a great Regular Show/Adventure Time vibe to it or maybe these animated shows have a Herbie feel to them since Herbie existed before they did.
I'd heard of Herbie before, but I've never actually read any of his stories. Comic Book Plus has many of the ACG titles on their site, including Forbidden Worlds, but I don't see Herbie's own comic. Not in the public domain? Or just that nobody's scanned them yet? comicbookplus.com/?cid=808
To the best of my knowledge, the Herbie copyright is owned by Charlton Media Group. So, no...he wouldn't be in the public domain. CMG, also owns a few other ACG characters. Although, I don't recall who they are offhand. All the other ACG material I believe is public domain.
The way you describe the comics, it definitely has a lot in common with JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Some of the plots can be too ridiculous for words and the way the characters solve problems can be so nonsensical, but to the reader, with the in-universe rules, it just makes sense. And it's so popular BECAUSE of the quirky way it's written. It's serious but doesn't take itself seriously.
I have a vague memory of Herbie transforming into a living flying saucer -- or maybe I'm confusing him with someone or something else? It was well over fifty years ago.
Let's all try and spread the word of Herbie. What comics character is more palatable to modern meme sensibilities? It oughtta be fairly easy to start some kind of resurgence in popularity. (Which could, potentially, lead to a revival of some kind. Not that we want that, but I'm just saying.)
*i cant believe i've never heard of this character before, but more importantly, **_i cant believe it's silver age!_** moreover, i have a feeling this has been far more groundbreaking and influential than anyone has mentioned. like i said, i'd never heard of it until now, so when i saw the thumbnail i instantly thought this video was about **_daniel clowes._** but ofc impossible bc clowes was born in '61, so this was probably one of his influences even though he has never confessed it in any interview. he always mentions **_charles schultz,_** although their styles are nothing alike ... go figure :-\*
Hard to find? If you live anywhere in the United States, the Dark Horse reprints are readily available through your public library. Even if your local branch doesn't have them (and they probably won't) they can easily get them via the interlibrary loan system, and there are (or were, ten years ago) close to a hundred copies out there in the network. And honestly, having read them, you'll probably want to buy your own. Worth every penny.
I read almost all the Herbie comics as a kid. I was astonished and amazed by his super powers. Much more interesting than Superman or Batman. We need a Herbie revival (and maybe a movie), but political correctness will keep that from happening unfortunately.
Thinking I could become a pro wrestler by stealing the Fat Fury gimmick! I'd be curious to read the Herbie comics, that oddness of the stories and the Fat Fury's ad hoc superpower has sparked my interest.
I have to presume, much like Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoons back in the day when these comics were out, and I grew up with them. The kids after me didn't find them interesting or flat out didn't get the humour and fantasy in them! To complex for them! Couldn't figure it out. Same reason Rocky & Bullwinkle got taken off the air! I still have all my Herbie Comics! I'm 66 now. Still enjoy & read them over the years! Shame.
ACG had a lot of 50s and 60s racism.. .... But there's some wild charm to the stories and I can't put them down. Like I get it why its like that.. *shrug* I found two comics at a flea market in the early 2000s
To be honest, having Looney Tunes shenanigans as a super power is a pretty strong and underrated one.
Recently Oda revealed the Luffys devil fruit isn’t the rubber fruit but the rubber hose fruit instead meaning he can behave like an old rubberhose popeye style character.
Also totally agree that it’s a hyper underrated power :)
A parody of Herbie recently appeared in Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Tempest.
He's stated before that he was a huuuuuge fan of Herbie.
I didn't know how hard I needed this in my life. Herbie is arguably the greatest comic character I've ever heard of.
I was nine years old when I got my first Herbie comic in 1964 and it’s still funny
Man the wild fantastical whimsy is tight as hell
I'm always looking for comics like this
Yeah, this is pretty amazing. If you like wild, fantasy and whimsy then you owe it to yourself to find Herbie comics. I adore it.
Isn't this Alan Moore's favorite comic?
If it isn't, it should be. It should be everyone's favorite comic. :)
Thank you. Well done.

That's a good overall assessment of "Herbie." It captures the elusive appeal of this one-of-a-kind series. Thanks.

I need to read Herbie!!!!!!
You channel is amazing dude
One part of herbie that confuses me is who owns the copyright, since the company went defunct in 1967, its possible that herbie is public domain (though i wouldn't use the character without solid proof)
The way that first issue is described reminds me of the book A Confederacy of Dunces a little bit
Herbie is a God amongst men
Herbie Is.
Herbie IS god
Herbie needs to join the Doom Patrol
Can you imagine an adventure team up with Herbie and Flex? I can't, and that's why it needs to happen!
That is an incredible idea.
I adore this. Thank you. Never knew he was any publisher's best seller
Herbie takes your mind off the normal stress of the day
Never heard of this comic now I want to know all about it
Man, PJ Harvey, what a NICE touch on the video!! Im SO fan of this channel!
"Herbie Is." Herbie could give Darkseid a run for his money.
I expected nothing but now I'm a fan. Need to look into Flaming Carrot too.

Isn't that bowling ball mail scam essentially the plot for Hallowe'en 3?
Little fun fact is that Herbie's way of speaking inspired Rorschach's.
Something about Herbie is oddly psychedelic
"Herbie holds a picture of the employer over his own face, and he's immediately hired."
That's freaking genius.
At 3:29 - it's a TIGER, not a lion. Note its stripes?
Herbie would be a favorite children's story on Planet Surreal! His comics are a treasured weird memory from my childhood.
I read a Herbie comic book once in the 60s. Don't know where I got it from or what the plot was, but his main power was bouncing.
This kid needs a movie
You can make it he’s in the public domain
Herbie just made you feel good when you were a kid in the 60s. Read one of his comics and the world was alright.
Herbie has a great Regular Show/Adventure Time vibe to it or maybe these animated shows have a Herbie feel to them since Herbie existed before they did.
“Describing an average Herbie adventure is a difficult task.”
Sounds like somehow “Xavier: Renegade Angel”. Hmm.
Reminds me of “The Twisted Tales of Felix”!
Legends like this kid is gonna be a movie one day
If Oda said this was his inspiration for Luffy I would not be surprised.
He took a bite of gumgum, and Herbie most likely took a bite of a lolly pop with gum inside. Think about it.
I'd heard of Herbie before, but I've never actually read any of his stories.

I got the dh 92 issue.lol

Herbie reboot in the vein of King’s miracleman when
Theres a certain charm to herbie and his adventures, in an almost Rick and Morty way
All sorts of info on Herbie here: herbiepopnecker.com/
If he existed on the DC universe, he'd probably be the most powerful metahuman on the planet!
At some weird level, Herbie reminds me of Zap comic's "The Checkered Demon"
I have a vague memory of Herbie transforming into a living flying saucer -- or maybe I'm confusing him with someone or something else?
It was well over fifty years ago.
The original One Punch Man
He's also the original Haruhi Suzumiya lmao
Do you own the actual issues? If so, how did you come across them?
man dad loves this comic

One difference between Herbie and the Fat Fury: only Herbie travels through time.
I heard this comic also inspired Shin Chan.

Hi. Out of curiosity, did you buy that expensive edition of dark hose?
Who is the chick playing guitar?
The Fat and The Furious
If anything he deserves an anime.
I will hit you with this here lollypop

Herbie vs Thanos endgame
This feels like a pg rated lsd trip.
Fat shaming! REEEEEEE!!
oh cool it's a carbon-copy sarcastic "reeee" guy here to imitate the other morons who typed it before him
He kinda looks like Kim Jong Un.
WTF ahahaha
