I couldn't help but shed a tear at the “Help me, Luffy” scene. Her origin is so sad. Emily Rudd really did a great job as Nami, and bringing one of my favorite characters to life.

They haven't been happy about the success of One Piece because it proves that being accurate to source material actually works. I do agree though, in a perfect world you'd give her that nomination. GoT is one prime example of that and it got tons of awards from the Emmys and for the first 7 seasons it followed the book religiously. A better argument would be that they wouldnt like the source material to begin with. One Piece is a very weird piece of content for an outsider, especially for a critic.

The "Luffy, help me" scene was one of the things I was looking forward to most in this adaptation. I'm glad they were able to nail it. Still one of the most iconic scenes in One Piece.
Amazing acting by Emily Rudd. Nami's backstory is such a tragic one. Her asking Luffy for help, Luffy putting his hat (his treasure) on her head, and the zoom out revealing the whole crew is one of the most iconic moments in anime, and this live action did a phenomenal job bringing that to life!

yeah, a lot of people talk about Arlong being dumb for killing bellemere because he lost someone who could make money, but the thing is, he wants money but above all else he wants to make humans suffer, so if he loses money for that, he doesn't care, he simply hates human that much.

One thing they changed between the anime and the live-action, is that when Nami was collecting the money for the village in the anime, the villagers knew what she was doing, along with her sister. But they changed it in the live action.

In the manga they were always acting like they didn't like her while Nojiko always knew. In this she sacrifices even the love of her fucking sister, the only family she has left, how is this ruining it because of some tattoos? Honestly u guys just love to hate for no reason, any change is a bad one.

Also, it’s not necessarily about the loss of tattoos, but they knew but pretended they didn’t know cause they wanted to give Nami the chance to run away without feeling guilty.
the sincerity in acting really does help immerse the viewers into taking this seriously/let us feel those emotional moments while still being able to balance humours scenes.
In the anime Nami saying "Help me" to Luffy was already emotional enough, but seeing an actual living human being act it out with the emotion of an actual human being that exists in real life along with the sounds that was playing in the background just made it even more emotional and epic at the same time.
I think Zoro's actor is getting a bit of a bad rap on the dramatic scenes. I definitely think he could improve, but I think the reason the scene didn't land with his promise to Luffy is that they tried to be too manga faithful, and a real person can't actually convey emotion the way that Zoro expresses in that panel to give it the emotional weight and the closest approximation just doesn't feel real. I thought that was more a failure of adaptation than an acting failure (a rare one for this series honestly).
Honestly would have wanted them to maybe do things a bit differently in that scene perhaps by using different words that convey the same thought and emotions like the anime/manga like how Sanji and Zeff farewell scene happened to better suit live action aspect and suit the actors as well. The acting is definitely still a part of it, he is not as good with dramatic scenes but reaaaally good with badass scenes. But that’s okay he still did a good job as Zoro overall, he just probably need to improve not just his acting but also the direction for his scenes as well. Like don’t copy 1:1 but try to innovate to convey same emotions and highlight Zoro’s character in a way that fits live action and the actor better
The direction of this Zoro is just lame. He is too quiet and tries to act cool and collected. Real Zoro still has a loud rowdy mouth and is more personable.
I'm still fine with Zoro because even then has always been the stoic one of the crew, but true. Another thing that I would say when it comes to the past backstories for the crew as kids is that I feel like Zoro's was the weakest here. I'm glad they kept the Kuina talk about how they'll diverge as they grow older due to their biology (also it emphasized her point given Zoro as a boy was smaller than her, but here they're about the same height in LA so somewhat undermines that bit) given how the times are with trying to be woke. But the reason why felt his was the weakest was that in comparison to the anime/manga we see Zoro working hard in his training in trying to defeat Kuina, then when they have their 2000th rematch Zoro still loses and see him completely frustrated and crying despite all his hard work then after she gives off her speech and with him telling her off to not make excuses and the promise they make to each other they're both working hard which is then what makes the impact of Kuina's death hit harder and for Zoro too because he'll never be able to have that rematch and he again cries hard when Kuina's father gives him the sword to honor her and live for their dream. The accumulation of this is what makes Zoro's shock from all his hard work and oath to Kuina when Mihawk is making a mockery of him with a knife is what is even more upsetting from how large the distance is between them whereas here in the LA Zoro makes the snide remark of acting as though everything is fine in having Mihawk on the ropes. So yeah as a big Zoro fan as he was my fav of the original 5 (east blue members) his backstory just didn't hit quite as hard. Whereas then can absolutely say characters like Usopp (backstory execution is better here instead of being random after thought from Merry telling tale when crew leaves) and Sanji characterizations here are I like in being more laidback compared to their over the top anime/manga counterparts.

There is nothing wrong with the acting or the adaptation. The problem is that many people these days, especially younger people, don't form the sort of connections they are showing in this show. The thought of devoting your life to somebody else like that has never occurred to people who are mostly interested in their own goals and their own problems. So seeing and hearing such a sentiment expressed out loud sounds cringe to them. Also, with their constant injection of silly jokes every 10 seconds, they never allow themselves to get immersed in the moment and actually feel what is being expressed. So they feel like a bystander, watching uncomfortably while other people are having a moment they don't understand.
I do love Mackenyu's acting as Zoro actually. I just think that the live action character suffers a bit from the "too cool" syndrom, which makes him a bit more one dimensional and makes emotional scenes not hit as hard The writers probably wanted Zoro to be just as popular as he is in the manga/anime, which is why they focused so much on him being cool and badass that they forgot that epsecially in the beginning his best character traits are him quietly taking care of everyone and getting shit actually done, with some moments of goofiness in between

Also, since they already introduced Mihawk, the 7 Warlord would be more important in the nexr seasons. Can't wait how they gonna handle Crocodile next season since Arabasta is going to be the main focus in Season 2 and it's a long arc as well. I hope they also find a perfect actor to play Doflamingo since he's my favorite One Piece villain.

20:34 In the manga and anime, she did. Arlong forced Nami to work for her and offered the chance to buy back her village as a carrot. She told Nojiko about it who then got her own tattoos in solidarity. I'm not sure why she got them in the live action version. Nojiko also told Genzo and the whole village ended up knowing but pretend not to until the nest egg was stolen. That is what set them off. Arlong was more interested in money in the original and had rules he would never break. He claimed he never broke a deal when it came to money, using Nezumi was a loophole. Still one rule he stuck to is that he would never harm another fishman... at least not intentionally. In the original one of the Straw Hats used a fishman as a living shield to block one of his attacks and he was horrified to see what he had done.

Arlong calling Jinbe a Dog is funny, Jinbe would tear Arlong to pieces. Arlong is the level one Boss where Jinbe is like level 200. Arlong's a small Fish.

As someone 1000 episodes deep I love this adaption so much, it really captured the energy and story of the original show but put it's own flavour and spin on it

Live action one piece got me to watch the anime and I haven’t regretted it since. I’m on Sabaody Archipelago and i can say that One Piece is truely the best adventure story of all time
TBH, I don't like this change of Nojiko and by extension the rest of the village not knowing about Nami's deal. Nojiko was Nami's confidant and supported her through a tough time, and the villagers knowing about the deal showed that they still cared about Nami and trusted her. Also, Nojiko got her tattoos as a show of solidarity for Nami. By her not knowing Nami's deal, the meaning behind the tattoos is gone.
It makes sense in context of the show,Nami offered herself to work under arlong,people will think it's scummy to betray your community to work for their oppressor instantly While in the original Nami is kidnapped to be enslaved by arlong so the villager have some ground to doubt for Nami's loyalty to Arlong

20:34 In the manga and anime, she did. Arlong forced Nami to work for her and offered the chance to buy back her village as a carrot. She told Nojiko about it who then got her own tattoos in solidarity. I'm not sure why she got them in the live action version. Nojiko also told Genzo and the whole village ended up knowing but pretend not to until the nest egg was stolen. That is what set them off.
Arlong was more interested in money in the original and had rules he would never break. He claimed he never broke a deal when it came to money, using Nezumi was a loophole. Still one rule he stuck to is that he would never harm another fishman... at least not intentionally. In the original one of the Straw Hats used a fishman as a living shield to block one of his attacks and he was horrified to see what he had done.

TBH, I don't like this change of Nojiko and by extension the rest of the village not knowing about Nami's deal. Nojiko was Nami's confidant and supported her through a tough time, and the villagers knowing about the deal showed that they still cared about Nami and trusted her.
Also, Nojiko got her tattoos as a show of solidarity for Nami. By her not knowing Nami's deal, the meaning behind the tattoos is gone.
It makes sense in context of the show,Nami offered herself to work under arlong,people will think it's scummy to betray your community to work for their oppressor instantly
While in the original Nami is kidnapped to be enslaved by arlong so the villager have some ground to doubt for Nami's loyalty to Arlong
