I don’t think Jim asked to be killed off. They’ve planned this show far out and a lot of shows do a big character death like this that pivots the show (30 episodes or so, sometimes sooner). Also Tabitha saw Jim hanging upside down in one of her visions earlier in the show, possibly foreshadowing his death.
The issue with Cynthia was more than simply playing Harriet. She made some very unsavory statements about African Americans. That’s why people were mad at her.
