I think theres also the point that hyper realistic graphics became very stale lately. I honestly can't see a big jump in quality and realism between something like red dead redemption 2 and final fantasy vii rebirth. It all looks a bit samey to me. Thats why I feel like artistic direction will always beat crazy hyper realism, not only because it is timeless but also because you can actually feel the vision behind hollow knight's graphics when compared to something like generic male character 1 on starfield
@@ygorpereirax yeah I would agree with that especially with the jump from gen 8 to gen 9 consoles. The only thing that’s changed is the file sizes for these games.
While I won't comment on the effort it takes to create pixel graphics, I am sure it takes a lot, but for me pixel graphics have become synonymous with innovation, either in gameplay or sound design or story. Whereas realistic looking games have blended together. And then there are games like Hollow Knight and Nine sols, which while being 2d still have incredible graphics.
Well made Pixel art is just timeless while hyper realistic game tend to look a lot worse after a few years. You need so much budget to make a "good looking - hyper realistic" game while smaller Teams with not much funding can still make pixel art that stands the test of time. Probably there is some nostalgia involved as i grew up playing NES and SNES. I don't know if younger Gamers get the same feeling like i do when they see well made pixel art :)
