Gunna be honest shows how well the West was looked after and cared by any not from the South West. The government and NR side did not and still fails properly invest in western infrastructure
Southall crash caused by Slough New signal box routing a freight train in front of a 125 mile express, Ladbroke Grove by a poorly trained Thames driver misreading a signal,a signal that FGW had repeatedly complained about. Railtrack kept kicking the can down the road and did nothing about it.
@@paulmasterson386The Southall incident was down to Great Western, though. No one reported the isolation of AWS in the driving cab so the signaller wasn’t aware that routing the freight was going to be an issue. The driver of the HST went through several warning signals because they were distracted by packing up ready to go rather than driving the train. By the time the driver even realised that there was an issue, they’d passed the red signal and applied the emergency brake reducing the HST to 60-80mph. Ladbroke Grove was a completely different issue.
I'm sorry to correct you Vanmanyo but it was 43011 that was involved at Southall. Then 43019 after Ladbroke Grove then 43173 following the level crossing collision at Ufton Nervet.
Nope totally wrong …. The correct sequence is … 43173 @ Southall. 43011 @ Ladbroke Grove. 43019 @ Ufton Nervett . Also the sleeper services had class 47 / 8’s until refurbished class 57/6 were ordered and entered service .
FGW got too big from 2006 and that’s when the poor reputation started. Thames Valley and West should have remained seperate. It’s always compared to Virgin and GNER and their modern equivalents but the WCML and ECML have dedicated intercity only TOCs and other operators take care of the local and commuter services. When they only had HST’s operating London bound services it was a lot more premium.
No. FGW owning Thames and Wessex meant no more local stopping trains being allowed in front of high speed expresses because’…it’s their path…’ When FGW controlled all trains it stopped local services being pathed in front of express trains. I was a guard on HST trains out of Paddington, can you imagine how much the delay was if you had to follow the local stopper between Reading and Bedwyn ? Just because of a 10 minute delay between Paddington and Reading.
You also had First Great Western Link that was a sub-brand of First Great Western. I do miss the Class 43 Mk3s as Great Western Railway replaced them with the Class 800 and Class 802 IETs.
It's gonna be EvenMoreWorseGroup now they've bought out Grand Union. Good news is though, that gives ME a chance of buying them out to make them better.

They were generally known as Worst Late Western, and definitely deserved that name.
for all their faults, (in my opinion at least) they know how to make a good livery
Personal favourite, barbie livery (for any train it was on)
So in other words, they lived up to the expression _"All show, no go."._
Funny to read this, to eyes they have always been the ugliest liveries I've ever seen in the UK, maybe even worldwide.
I agree, I really liked the livery especially when it sped through level crossings and stations.
I remember watching the green and gold FGW HSTs fly through Twyford with my dad when I was a little boy.
Just left GWR for another TOC. Will be interested in the rest of this series.
How they were never stripped of their contracts after two crashes so soon after taking over I don't know. I hope we never see the likes of this again.

FGW/GWR Screwed Up When The IETs and 387s Showed Up Because of The Ironing Board Seats
Chosen by all accounts by DFT not the operator
@ethmister Probably Because The DFT Is Being Run By Stupid People Who Don't Know What They Are Doing
Surprised Thames trains were fined £2m should of been more after the ladbrook Grove accident.

Please do correct me! And thank you - I have updated this in the pinned comment :)

They made a right mess of their HST sets by cramming in a few extra seats.
When those Adelante sets DID work,,,,they were brilliant!
Honestly I don’t care, those fgt hst’s were beautiful lol
Great video, I knew FGW was bad, didn't know how much LMAO
Thank you!
caught you lacking
Fantastic video as always
Thanks for your support!
GWR is the textbook example as to why rail privatization in the UK was, and still is, an unmitigated disaster.

Stay tuned for FGWL 👀
Interesting.
Just observing that the Sleeper didn't go to Paignton, it went from Penzance up to Paddington and reversed on way back down
Great video.

The big, the bad, the purple
Opinions on the 165, I think Chiltern Railways should make their fleet of only 165s
Great opinions as always Mr Breton (perhaps named after the bretton woods conference one may ask?)
Great western is not the flagship, it is west coast mainline which serves the highest population and biggest metropolises of the UK
Never mind, all to be nationalised during this parliament so all will be super dooper from then on! 😉
