On Tuesday, 22 August 2022 we drove out to Silverton, Oregon. Silverton sits about an hour south of Portland, Oregon and it sits on Silver Creek.
It seems to be a great place to live or just visit on a weekend or day trip.
Real estate can get expensive here but they still have some affordable places.
This is one of the nicer downtowns I have visited in recent months.

My mother started her teaching career at Silverton high school way way back in the day! I am 77 so we’re talking a long time ago! she taught journalism and supervise the school newspaper! just a dash of trivia! really really beautiful country at that time! I was born and raised in Salem in the 50s a whole different world then! put a hay for a farmer just outside Silverton! Silver Creek Falls gorgeous country East of Salem!
Come a little farther down I-5 to Brownsville and see the river, bridge, mill turned into a restaurant and see where Stand By Me was filmed. Then go a little farther and see Coburg and see the cute downtown and park. Both adorable towns!!
I've been to Silverton only once years ago. Our son lived in Albany then. He has lived in Hillsboro for at least 15 years now. We come up at least once a year to visit. Love the area. And love the northern Oregon coast. I think that we went to some waterfalls around Silverton. Very pretty!!!

Silver falls is the only reason to visit Silverton!

My brother used to live there back in the early to mid 90's and I visited one time in.. I think it was 1994.
There's a really cool waterfall nearby in a place called Silver Falls state park. Awesome place.
My wife and kids loved going to small towns on road trips. Always a gem there. Weather it landscape, country diner, super nice people, cool old history, state park or national park. Wife loved the black hills of South Dakota, myself an youngest two kids loved munising, Michigan. I believe I’ll be moving there for a slower simpler life with the winters I dream of m, most people fear that kind of winter but I’m intrigued. An the skies, coast line, an northern lights make it more worth it than anything else. When visiting small towns or small family vacations, don’t take them for granted. The memories are hard to hold onto without anyone to share the memory with. Always look forward towards the next small town with something special there. Take time an smile and wave at others
We live in PDX and have been looking for a dog to adopt. My wife found one on Craigslist just outside Silverton, so we tossed the family in the car and drove over. From the moment we entered the area, all we could talk about was how much we wanted to move there. It looks like it'll either be there or Ridgefield, WA.

We went up to Oregon to visit my son and his family in July, 2021. We stayed two nights at Silverton to hike around Silver Falls (and several other falls in the park) and visit some wineries. I recognized many places you showed! We also thought it was a cute town and very friendly.
I was born in Silverton and have family there. It is a beautiful small town that is becoming a bit of a tourist spot.
Silverton is a great small town, very close to Silver Falls State Park, and a scenic drive to get there. Biggest downside is the cost of real estate, way too expensive for a town in this location in Oregon. People who live here know how lucky they are! Looking for a great small town? Try Reedsport / Winchester Bay on the central coast.
You live in a beautiful state, I like the balance between, farmlands, forests,mountains, and coastline. I enjoy it when you mix it up,great job Briggs!
I lived there for four great years. I love Oregon and Silverton. It was amazing, Type of place to either raise a family or retire
This town is beautiful in the fall, particularly The Silverton State Park. There are many beautiful trails.
I love these videos! Oregon has a lot to offer, I just wish it wasn't so expensive to live there.
Live in Grants Pass Oregon. Silverton and many of the small towns East of Salem at the edge of the Willamette Valley are incredible. Stayton, Sublimity, Silverton ... all beautiful.

I grew up in Glendora, CA ... now living in Beaverton for the past 12 years. Prior to that, lived in Vancouver, WA for 2 years.
I visited Silverton several times last summer and loved it. It's a lttle too far out of city limits for my taste, but I think it's a very charming place!
Seems like a desirable place for someone tired of the city life. Maybe work from home will become common and there will be more wealth spread to the country's rural areas
The problem is that it could drive up the price of housing and make it unaffordable for the locals.
Good luck finding a place to live. There are a lot of restrictions on where you can build a house in Oregon. Otherwise, there wouldn't be any of the wonderful things that draw people to Oregon.
Silverton has always been a desirable place to live. You pay a premium to live in a nice community with excellent schools
I'm not a impulse person but the min I walked on my block I knew Silverton was it. I took the new place that day & I hadn't even sold the house I was in . Two weeks later it sold after being on the market for 2 years ! So crazy ! But I just knew Somehow
15 years later it's the best decision I've made ! Life's to short to be unhappy with where you live . I just wish I found it sooner My drive time was 2 hrs both ways in the city ! It took me a short while to get off city time to small town time . I can't imagine having to go back
My uncle was a police officer here in the late 70s early 80s. He is also in the novel kiss me kill me about a murder case that happened in Silverton George Holland was his name.
I vaguely remember Officer Holland. Good guy.
Nice video, Briggs!! Beautiful town! Reminds me of those quaint little towns in Vermont. No chaos like the big towns. Might be a nice place to retire to, if you were into colder weather.
I spent a couple days in Salem in 2020. I did a quick pass through of Silverton. I went to the Oregon Garden and loved it. It was drizzling. That plus COVID, plus it was a weekday, there were only like 5 or 6 other people there. They had a nice little gift shop.
Hey Briggs. Next time you go down there, check out Silver Creek Lanes. They have a great restaurant there with COVERED seating right on the creek, and the food is top notch above standard bowling alley fare. Tell the owners Andy sent you :)

this was so sweet and nostalgic to watch, i lived in silverton for quite a few years when i was really young and have the fondest memories of the town.
Since you are based in Oregon, I would love to see a video on Corvalis, Or. I think it's a beautiful small town and home to Oregon State University. It's a place I always stop at on the way to Newport on the Coast. It seems the perfect size, not to Big to feel lost in, but not to small to lack the necessities of life. Lots of Bicycles and Bike lanes. Grants Pass is another Oregon town I really liked except it was over 100F when I went there in the summer. I had planned to tent camp, but ended up in the Motel 6 with A/C since it was so brutally hot.

It's funny how "old stuff" out west isn't really old. I had an apartment once in a building that was built in 1780. The house Benedict Arnold grew up in was right down the street. Now that was old.
Many fond memories of living in Silverton from '79 to '84. We had to move to Salem for practical reasons, and I really miss living there in the laid-back atmosphere. It has changed a little since we lived there, but the soul of the place has remained warm, friendly, casual. I visit whenever I can, and it's actually therapeutic.
Spent summers there as a kid as both sides of my family grew up there. It was very agriculture oriented and still produces a lot of Christmas trees, but was achingly slow for a teenager. It has now morphed into a bedroom community and become a little trendy, at least the real estate pricing. A nice place to visit.
If you're willing to go further north, have you considered Enumclaw, Washington? It's a gorgeous little Seattle-area exurb at basically the foot of the Cascades with some excellent views of Mount Rainier and a lot of farms. It's main problems are that it's on one of the main roads from Seattle to Mt. Rainier and, oh yeah, it'll eventually be wiped out after Rainier blows. Still worth a look around.

Great historical town. I ride my motorcycle over with my wife and we go through silverfalls state park and come in on the main road of Silverton and grab a bite and head back home to Dallas Oregon. Neat homes.
Hey Briggs, love your new project! I love learning about these great small towns. What might work well is running audio on top of your walking tour of some local person giving some local color off camera while you play that over your main video. Keep up the great work!
I've thought about that. But I get some really load cars and trucks go by and lowering the volume gives a strange feel to the video.

I just happened to freeze the video toward the end (8 minutes 25 seconds to be exact) and saw a sign stating that that was the 49th parallel which is the halfway point between the North Pole and the Equator. Other parts of the country and probably the world on that have 3 months of summer, 1 month of fall, one month of spring and 7 months of winter, LOL! The west coast fairs much better in that department.
Looks like the pandemic did good things to Silverton. When I was driving parts to the NAPA store there in the 2000s and going through it on the way elsewhere about 10 years ago, you could have mistaken any random picture of Silverton for Picher, Oklahoma if you didn't notice the trees first.
We love Silverton and visit there several times a year. Love the Oregon Gardens. Less than an hour from Tigard where we live.
Silverton. I have a grew up here my whole life and I’m still living here. in every clip I knew exactly where you were .Silverton is really the best little town in America. At the start of your walk downtown there was the Silver Falls brewery which my dad owns you should’ve went there for lunch. I hope you visit again. The Oregon garden is absolutely beautiful and Silverton is also surrounded by waterfalls. I hope you read this and maybe visit again.
I grew up about 25 minutes outside of Silverton...my dad always loved walking around downtown Silverton so one day my parents decided to take my sisters and I out there to have lunch...we get into town and see a bunch of people standing on the street corner shown at 2:25 so my family walks up by the crowd out of curiosity as to what’s going on and all of a sudden Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Thornton come walking right by us...they were walking to their trailers after filming a scene in the movie “Bandits”...so we hung out there the rest of the day watching them film parts of the movie there. It will always be my favorite memory of Silverton lol
Yes, there is an area in Silverton that reminds me of Pasadena and I actually grew up in Pasadena. I really like Silverton the few times we drove through there.

Oregon is a beautiful state.
I grew up there. Back then the population was about 4,500 or so, much more cozy. Next time you're there, you really need to get to the city park, it's called McClaine Park. It's just across Silver Creek from where you started your walking tour. Oh, and go during strawberry season, very good time to be there.
I can’t believe you made this video about my home town. There are some appealing qualities but don’t go if you expect to be able to go to any shops after 6 pm (everything closes) and if you’re a minority you will be the only one around in many circumstances. It’s cute to visit but tiring to live in.
I live in PA but my aunt and uncle live in Silverton, and I love it there it’s really nice, with a lot of small shops and stuff
1:57 - That’s my grand parents farm. Oh, and you’re heading toward Woodburn. Silverton is the other way. I grew up in Silverton and raised my kids there. Miss it every day.

I grew up in Rowland Heights, California. Now live in Stayton, Oregon about 15 miles or so south of Silverton. I was in Silverton today as a matter of fact, got a Dutch Bros iced coffee mocha in Silverton today, yum!

The only bad thing about small towns is if a few people hate you then half the town hates you.

Nice take on Silverton but you missed the Murals, Bobbie the Wonder Dog, the covered bridge and a few more points of interest. Also home of Silver Falls State Park, which is spectacular.

Hey, I'm new to Oregon. Only been here about 9 months. Next time you go to Silverton go about 20 minutes into the forest and go to the Silverton Fall Lookout point. Really Gorgeous.
Haven't visited Oregon since 2017; I missed the trip.

I remember growing up in Oregon , and seeing dozens of people putting peanuts in there 16 ounce bottles of RC cola ! Went back to Oregon last year to see an old man pouring a bag of peanuts down his 20 ounce plastic bottle of RC cola ! After 60 years , still the same , just bigger prices

Grew up in rancho cucamonga, CA so those homes would be like the ones at the foothills of town. Anything above Banyan st typically rich. I definitely did not grow up around there lol.
In this town, they say,
"Grew up on the wrong side of the creek".

An interesting piece of trivia, in the 1980's, Silverton had the highest number of churches per capita in the WORLD. I don't know if that's true anymore. It's also the only place we drive through that our dog barks at people walking down the sidewalk.
Well, if your doing small towns in Oregon, I highly recommend you show the country/world McMinnville, OR, unless you have done an episode on it already

You mention RC Cola... When I lived in Portland, I played trivia at The Old Barn on Barbur. They had RC... That was 10 years ago... wonder if they still have RC. I like it better than Coke/Pepsi.

Every time you see hanging flowers someone has to water it daily on those few days it doesn’t rain. Good cities have pride. I’m from Oregon. I can remember when Oregonians picked up garbage just because. I did. I kept bags in car to do so. It was NOT unusual. Everybody did. Pride.
