I lived through it all The Holy hour =closed from 2 to 4 pm on a Sunday, though a lot of pubs just closed the door and left whoever wanted stay there. The 3 mile limit= if you lived or said you lived more than 3 mile from the pub i.e You were classed as a visitor, and could get in early and have a drink before 12.30 on a Sunday. I saw the change in the closing hours from 10 to 11 pm on Sunday night. Iv'e sw]een a hell of a lot of changes since I first started drinking in 1965 when a pint Guinness was1shilling and sixpence and a large bottle Guinness was 1shilling and seven pence.Old Money of course. Whiskey and other spirits was dearer than Beer, It is the opposite now as Beer is dearer.

An Irish man walks into a pub.
"What'll you have?" the bartender asks.
"Give me three pints of Guinness, please," says the man.
The bartender brings him three pints, and the man proceeds to sip them alternately -- the first one, the next one, and then the third one, until they're all gone. He then orders three more.
"Sir,” says the bartender, “I know you like them cold. You don't have to order three at a time. I can keep an eye on you, and when you get low I'll bring you a fresh cold one."
"You don't understand,” the man says. “I have two brothers, one in Australia and one in the States. We made a vow to each other that every Saturday night we'd still drink together. So right now, my brothers have three Guinness Stouts too, and we're drinking together.”
”What a wonderful tradition,” the bartender says, smiling.
Every week after that, the man comes into the bar and orders three beers. But one week, he orders only two. He drinks them and orders two more.
"I know what your tradition is,” says the bartender sadly, “and I'd just
like to say that I'm sorry that one of your brothers died."
"Oh, me brothers are fine,” says the man. “I just quit drinking."

If any person interested in this subject or its wider connotations can do so, get hold of a book called " The Pub and The People"
Its a 1938 Worktown ( Bolton, Lancashire) study and although some of it is dated and of its time, its a fantadtic and still relevant detailed exploration of the Pub and drink with some surprising conclusions. Bill Naughton the playwright ( Alfie , amongst others) was Irish born but largely Lancashire raised, and his 3 part biography has several long descriptions of the Pubs and drinking as a wider experience from an Irish viewpoint seen through an English background.
    Great read for those interested.

You'd be game to take on a pub these days...it used to be the social point of communities, where you went to meet people and have a catch up..sure you can sit at home now and talk to people on the other side of the world via face time etc... that, and the price of a drink in a pub compared to what you can buy for 20 quid in a superstore off sales and drink at home. The Irish pub is on its knees, those that are still opened that is...more needs to be done to help promote the local pub trade, certainly in the more rural areas anyway.

@@marksoreilly94 i think it is a little more than that Mark. Someone from the 1500's could return to Ireland in 1970 and see huge changes, but the people would essentially be the same.
The conversation, the culture, the landscape.
Today someone who died in 1970, would not recognise what most of us have become, or how much our landscape has changed.
The way we have interacted with the modren world has been to suck up the worst aspects and jettison that about ourselves that was unique and special.
What could we have done? For starters when we joined the EU we should have preserved our agriculture. Turned ireland into a high end organic food producing country.
Preserved the small farms and small fields. It would mean greater profits for less production and make Ireland's landscape, in the modren world, look and feel unique and consequently a huge draw for visitors.
We should not have focused so much bad planning on Dublin, with its shoebox apartments and unconnected suburbs that stretch out soullessly into counties Kildare, Wicklow and Meath.
Market towns around the country should have been better exploited, instead they are dying or dead, while ugly ribbon development snakes its way across every road in the country.
Ireland has changed so much; we might as well drop the name "Ireland" and call ourselves "Metaland" instead.

@@eamonhannon1103 It probably did for some people, but for every great memory, there are about 20 horror stories of friendships destroyed, fights, injuries, bad blood, health destroyed, alcoholism, divorces, separations, adultery, assaults and crimes...DUIs, accidents, deaths on the road from gob shoites driving home drunk...men spending their week's wages on drink...people are sick of auld boring pubs in most cases now anyway, and the price of drink too...the off license and petrol stations killed the pubs...

@@sherp2u1 Sorry I do not agree . There is good and bad like everything else with drink . Social drinking in moderation is something to be valued . Of course like everything else there can be a problem side to drinking but to give a balanced picture we need to look at the good and the bad sides of drinking, pubs . Now we see people drinking at home . This is a very bad development in my opinion . Much better in the day when people went to their local pub to meet up with their friends and neighbours for a “ few sociables “ The French have their wine , the Italians , their food and we used to have our pubs . Places where the community met and socialised . Sadly they are closing down now around the country . Something I think we will deeply regret in the future . An institution of Irish culture being casually discarded . The pub was as important to Irish culture as Traditional music or the Irish language but we seem to be happy to see them fade away . Not me , I think action should be taken to preserve the Irish Pub and sociable drinking .
