    Very big applause to Anna & Kevin as well. I wonder your story of design custumised cat perfect fit for your family needed also " Racing Properties " - beside weekend cruising. I was started with Topcat F2 then Dart 18, those are beachcat of course but now, CarbonBee will be in my dreams.
    You inspired me with CarbonBee more than Gunboat, your statistic chart and CarbonBee performance was amazing, because since many years I could not heard about performance & comfort at the same time because of huge price level, for that reasons your success is amazing level , Congratulation indeed, it is very easy to watch your video in 5 to 10 minutes, but you and your family efforts , passion will be appreciated...
    So please keep inform us, as you can with new videos , about all details, hope to finish as soon as, I wish you and your family happy sails for next summer...

      We need little bit more time to finish the project, because of the winter here in Berlin and low temperatures. Practically we have to stop our building activity for few months. We plan that we can finish our project within next two years..... and than CarbonBee will sail in Mediterranean Sea and for sure we will visit Turkey as well. Stay in contact.

      CarbonBee is still not finished. I collect naturally all the bills and costs to get overview, but we still have running costs.
      I will try in the future, after finishing the building process, to make a video with information about the costs and materials as well.

      I have answered on one comment as follow (hope you will find some of interesting information for you):
      CarbonBee is in the stage where all bulkheads, vertical divisions elements, floors, horizontal panels (for e. beds in cabins), and fast all structural reinforcements are inside. Painting is not yet fully finished.
      As I said in response to one comment, considering that somebody will not need to do many trials and spent time for a lot of considerations, up to this stage, will need ca. 3000 - 4000 working hours.
      I don’t want just now to talk about the cost of the materials, because in every country the prices are different, but I can give estimated quantity of materials to get to this stage of building process:
      It is ca. 890 kg carbon fibres different kinds, ca. 620 kg Epoxy, ca. 740 kg structural PVC foam. Extra materials are the wood for mould/frames and all the components for vacuum infusion including ca. 40% extra epoxy, which goes with the vacuum infusion’s components after infusion into the basket - it is not too bad and cost much less then hand lamination, because we spare a lot of work-hours, cost for potential workers for lamination and their mistakes. It is very clean, easy to control process and we can reach ca. 60% carbon fibres in the laminate.
      5-10% of the materials must be also added for wastage.
      The most boring and hated activity was the filling/sanding process for the hulls, despite that we had only in very few places the difference up to 1mm. All the jobs were done generally by two persons, even the rotation of the hull I did together with Kevin. Also, all parts were light and easily to move by max. two persons.

    Bonjour, well done, it is impressive to see a boat self-built by a family. It requires technical and practical knowledge, plus access to ressources. I've read introductory description and almost all comments for Part01 and Part02, but I fail to see the time it has effectively taken you to finish the hull (without any fitting) and set it into water. What is the amout of material used (linear metres and width of reels, litres of epoxy, paint, ...etc...) ? Perhaps, also what is the rough budget for the bare hull ? Could this information (timespan, material specs and cost) appear in the description ? Merci et bonne continuation.

      We used Kevlar in some places, but for the reason only.
      The mix Kevlar/Carbon cloth is not good if you want stiffness. For the stiffness works only carbon. Kevlar will add weight in such laminate only. Otherwise, if you want more flexible laminate, carbon fibres have nothing to do inside.
      Kevlar has also poor comprehensive strength.
      Yes the rigging will be dynema.

    From scratch! Impressive! Well done guys. Do you have any specs you can tell us? I caught the weight, but I would love to know the Beam, expected draft (Dagger boards up), things like that.
    Impressed with your work. That's quite an undertaking. Do you intend to sail around as a family? Are you going to sail the world in it, or just weekends / short hops around Germany, or race it?

      CarbonBee is 15m long and 9,3m wide. Draft 2,5/0,47m. Ruder and electro-motors are also retractable. Weight empty is 3,8 - 4,0 t. depend on inside equipment. Anna wants all possible inside the boat ;-( , then we will tend to 4,0t.... but Kevin and I will fight. Displacement bis construction-waterline is 6.0t (0,23t/cm). Sails area including rotating mast is 140m².
      Our plans? First short trip to Baltic Sea to check everything, then Mediterranean Sea, may be 1-2 years, after that all is open. Let see.
      Racing?... Sure CarbonBee will like it!

    Wow - That's a phenomenal looking hull and a huge project. I built an F-9A tri (31' trimaran from Ian Farrier's plans) in the '90's using carbon over duracore striping and that was a very big project. A 50' carbon cat to your own design is huge. How many months to get to this stage?

      I calculate that 2 person can get this stage within 12-15 months if they get good non-limited place (workshop) and can make parallel some activities.
      For us it was longer. First: we couldn't work due to low temperatures almost 5-6 months in year. Second: Kevin has very intensive university study and could invest ca. half of the time as I. Third: Anna had in between to fight with two serious cancers and was most of the time out of activity.
      Not to mention that during the building they were a lot of trials and considerations how to do this or that. That, and collection of the materials and tools costed time. The technology was the most important thing, but to get it right costed us also a lot of time.

    Ur CarbonBee's light n muscular like real racing cat. Tell me about it bridge's clearance: high value necessary for glide without slaps from waves and pitch downs. Deep bridges usually dramatically reducing speed any condo-marans...
    Will you make the carbon rotation mast self-made too?

      You are right, the low bridge clearance is a big problem of production catamarans. CarbonBee at full displacement has the bridge clearance 0,95 m, but under the cockpit, where typically the waves slap the clearance is 1,15 m. In racing trim all will be ca. 7 cm higher.
      Yes, CarbonBee will get rotating mast. I am just busy with the design and calculations.

      Thanks! I am glad you like the design.
      For big flat parts, like for example deck, the dimensions were taken directly from the computer. Small flat parts were drawn direct on foam from the plotted print. All these parts didn't need very small tolerances in dimensions. Only the frames for the hulls were cut by CNC machine.       Design displacement is 6.0t.

      I am using software from AeroHydro, Maxsurf, Rhino and Solid Edge mostly for FEA.
      During the design process and building process we prepared also some Excel calculations sheets to check many variables.

    That's very impressive! - Are you a naval architect, or engineer in any way? I suppose you've to calculate on strength with the carbon fibre layers and such.

      I am MSc Mech. Eng. Now I am retired and have a time. Kevin is finishing his Master study, but despite that he manages to find a time for our family project.
      Yes, it was a lot of engineering calculations, but today's you can manage a lot using a computer.
      When CarbonBee starts to sail and will fulfil our predictions or surpasses them :-) , I will decide how to share the plans and technology for interested amateurs.

      It is my project and raised with all the constructions lines and calculations in my computer under the name JANU-15. (see also the Part 01 video)
      As I wrote in the description under the TH-cam video I couldn't find a catamaran which would suit me and my small family regarding Performance, Comfort and Cost. The two first factors resulted from the design I made. Third factor we try to manage by building the catamaran ourself.

    Mightily impressive. What is the layup of the Hulls? The inside and outside skin mat type and weight in g/m^2 and type and thickness of the core material. please.

      We use UD carbon-fabric 300 - 850 g/m² and Biax carbon-fabric 300 - 600 g/m² . Depends of the calculated stresses and forces in particular place the fabrics were laid with specific thickness and directions before infusion. Thickness and direction of the fibres inside the laminate is very very variable.
      In some few places we used also Kevlar.
      We use also very different thickness, density and kind of PVC core. Mostly Airex.

      CarbonBee is still not finished and is in the stage where all bulkheads, vertical divisions elements, floors, horizontal panels (for e. beds in cabins), and almost all structural reinforcements are inside. Painting is not yet fully finished. As I said in response to one comment, up to this stage, somebody will need ca. 3500 working hours.
      I calculate that 2 person can get this stage within 12-15 months if they get good non-limited place (workshop) and can make parallel some activities. For us it was longer. First: we couldn't work almost 5-6 months in a year due to low temperatures . Second: Kevin university study is very intensive and he could invest only one third of the time as I. Third: Anna had in between to fight with two serious cancers and was most of the time out of activity. Not to mention that during the building we had to make some trials and spent time for considerations how to do this or that. That, and collection of the materials and tools costed time. Good that the whole technology, which we developed, was the one most important thing which saved us a lot of time. Season 2022 is our 5th.

      Enrique, wir starten den Weiterbau in der nächsten Woche, und werden bis späten Herbst, es Temperaturen erlauben an unserem Projekt arbeiten. Wir sind in Berlin und Du kannst uns gerne besuchen. Unser Projekt ist zwar nicht von denen die man kostengünstig nennen kann, aber natürlich wir können darüber diskutieren, wenn wir uns treffen.
      Übrigens, in meinem Computer habe ich auch eine kleinere Version (JANU-12) zur Anschauen.
      In den Antworten unter Kommentare habe ich auch grob die Menge von Materialien für den JANU-15 Rumpf aufgelistet, wovon kann man die Kosten kalkulieren. Es gibt auch ein paar Informationen unter den Part-01 Video.

    Great work, The design of the rudder box is different. Is the rudder and post designed to pivot away if an obstacle is hit? Gil Bailey, Australia.

      Yes, the rudder will go up if something hit it or if the crew want to have less draft (0,47m). The construction is much more complicated, but we decided, considering safety, to have it.

Another question is how do you intend to have the boat driven under mechanical power. A fixed propellor shaft that will ride over an obstacle or a pod, both protected by the stubby keels? I was watching a TH-cam show "Sailing into Freedom " and Peter made reference to a alloy cat home built in Asia and utilized this style of rudder design and I thought it was a fantastic design and also a very good safety factor also. I think the alloy cat also had a draft of about the same as your boat. Gil..

    you have a TON of carbon fiber in this boat. Dare say it is 85% Carbon Fiber? You used High density foam, with Carbon over to top, correct? What a boat! Who did the design/calculations for this boat? Did you pay an expert designer?

      Yes, in this building stage CarbonBee weights just 2,5 t. - it is ca. 1,2t carbon fibre. Epoxy resin and Airex make about the rest.

    What about certification, is there such a thing for floating things? Or anything anyone can build has the right to sail?
    Also what about insurances, will they insure a custom-DIY build? At the same rate or higher?

      JANU-15 (CarbonBee) is designed according to the Directive 2013/53/EU to get CE certification. However the Directive doesn't apply if you build for own use and not sell the boat in EU within five years. Casco insurance, depends of the insurer will be slightly higher.

      You can use for example ZOLTEK PX35 or similar from other manufacturers.

      There are many different types of carbon fibre and how they are oriented etc, but there’s no marine specific grade. Carbon fibre is not sensitive to sea water. Also, when it’s put on a boat it’s encapsulated in epoxy resin, which is also totally resistant to water. Epoxy is, however, sensitive to long exposure to sunlight, so it needs a covering paint. Carbon is many times more expensive than glass fibre, and it demands more sophisticated build methods, so it’s not a suitable material for the inexperienced. The infusion process looked easy here, but it isn’t! :-)

    Magnificent build .. reely super! Im for last 2 years in studying build construction .. itc. Anyway I want to build simillar size but not like your "raketa :) " ..more like moving snale home. The last thing is source details is price for hull .. that is last thing before i go with green light. I would prefer to pay for material in range of 50k€..however your information come to a lot more.. So i must be wrong somwhere.
    You said you had 40% waste (that i didnt get it or missunderstood) -ok for 5-10%. You use about 900kg og Karbonfiber (how many meeters was that.)?
    And foam core..how many m2 did you use..That shocked me how much sellers wants for that..Im shure there is somme "marine price here-or offshore price as we called in Norwej".
    As for construction.. i have diffrent plan because of ease of build.. but your method just surrprised me. HOw did you form to shape foam core? And I assume you glued together fome core so it hold vakum.?
    Did you use gel cote or only paint... That part I need to studdy more because I want without gels ..only paint.

      If you want in future to build such boat, you can order the whole materials and ask for bulk-discount. It will be cheaper.
      Don't build also any boring, slow boat, which must use a motor for sailing. Such catamarans are for sale everywhere. Why to build one more?
      You ask what is the ca. 40% waste. It is the extra amount of epoxy which is trapped in the components of the vacuum infusion process (folie, tubing, peel ply, vacuum mesh, etc.) These components are after vacuum infusion separated and put in trash.
      For other materials you can count ca. 5-10% extra amount for waste.
      We do not use gel-coat. The hulls do not have end-painting yet - it is only the primer just now.

      @Jean Luc De Marc For sailing with my family and friends I want to design a 17m trimaran and this design is sailing but in my computer only. Finally due to inside living space I changed to design of a catamaran. So was born JANU-15, our "CarbonBee".
      In the part 1 video are some pictures of the vacuum infusion process.
      Few interesting designs of trimarans has Kurt Hughes and he can customise them. Look there.

Wenn ja, bis wann seit Ihr immer Vorort, weil mein Arbeitsplatz ist wesentlich Nähe zu euch als dieses von meinem Wohnort ist, sodass ich eventuell nach der Arbeit vorbei kommen könnte, natürlich unter der Voraussetzung, dass Ihr Vorort seit. Ich könnte unter der Woche so gegen 17:00 Uhr Vorort sein und bis 19:30 Uhr helfen, was nicht viel ist, aber ich hätte danach noch ein Heimweg von 1 Stunde und 20 Min.       I think you mean the hight of the bridge over the water level.
      A catamaran with a higher bridge is designed to handle larger waves and rough sea conditions more effectively. The increased height allows the catamaran to rise over waves rather than plowing through them, reducing the impact, resistance and ensuring a smoother ride. Catamarans with higher bridges are often found in sailing and power blue-water catamarans, offshore racing catamarans, or those intended for use in areas with larger waves, such as open oceans. On the other hand the catamarans with lower bridge are intended to use as house boats in ports and calm protected waters.
      It's important to note that the design of a catamaran involves various trade-offs, and the bridge height is just one aspect of the overall design. Other factors, such as weight, weight distribution, positioning of the bridge, sail plan, keel configuration, and overall hull shape, also play significant roles in determining a catamaran's performance and seaworthiness.

    I don't know anything about carbon fiber but I thought you had to cure it in an oven/autoclave for it to have full effect? How do you cure the epoxy, Or is this not true?!

      This is true for pre-preg materials. (preimpregnated fibres).
      For others epoxy laminates, depends of the kind of the epoxy resin, the maximal physical properties of epoxy resin can be reach after for example post-curing in 70°C. Such curing is because the resin, not because the fibres. Post-curing accelerate also full curing of such type of the resin, and the laminate is immediately ready to be used with full expected mechanical properties of resin.
      We are using epoxy resin which gives us designed mechanical properties already in ambient temperature (+25°C)

      @@noahnoah4526 There are many kinds of epoxy resin - for hand laminating, for infusion, with different cure timing and cure temperature, with different properties, etc. The best way is to ask the one of the main big supplier in your country, and consult the technical expert to choose the best resin for your laminating method and conditions you have.
      By the way, to reach the temperature of 70°C in the tent in the sunny days is no problem. Some carbon laminates/parts, if you lay them under the sun they reach easy 75°C. Black colour absorbs the heat.

      @FelixSamulevich - the beams between hulls are made from carbon fibre, infused with epoxy under vacuum. It is incredibly light / stiff / strong - way better than metal. The whole boat is made that way, it is a proven, modern construction method that amateurs can do themselves with excellent results. Google the strength-to-weight specs of vacuum infused carbon fibre vs steel / aluminium / stainless steel. Only titanium would be a worthy competitor and it costs 100x as much.

      The design plans are in my computer and I have a lot of hand drawings, and pictures which we took during the whole building process. Sometimes we took the dimensions direct form computer, sometimes we let plot some drawings. The frames for the hulls for example were cut using CNC machine.
      Previously I didn't intend to share the plans of my design. We considered it as our unique, family project. But now I see, many people are interested an JANU-15 ("CarbonBee").
      Maybe in the future, when CarbonBee will be ready for sailing and fulfil our predictions or surpasses it :-) I decide how to share the plans for interested amateurs.

    Problem with building your own boat is you become a boat builder, when you buy a built boat you become a sailor, which would you rather be? Just buy a boat
